    Introduction

    Welcome!

This book contains information about what the gastric sleeve surgery does to your body and how to adjust to the changes that will come after. This book serves as a guide to the different stages of diet that you need to go through before and after the procedure. It offers more than 77 creative and delicious recipes that will make it easier for you to commit to the requirements of the diet scheme.

This is a major surgery that is effective in helping you lose weight, but it comes with certain side effects. This book has a dedicated chapter on the side effects and nutrition complications that you may likely experience, and how should you deal with each.

Chapter 1 – The Basics about the Sleeve Gastrectomy

No matter what your reason as to why you have decided to undergo sleeve gastrectomy, be careful with your diet before and after the process. The most critical period is the first year after the procedure. You have to focus on weight control by making sure that you don’t go back to your old eating habits. You have to commit to the kind of lifestyle that is good for your overall health.

Make sure that you implement the following changes:

Eat right. Eat 3 full meals and 2 snacks every day.

Drink water to hydrate yourself, but stay away from coffee, alcohol, soda, and juices.

Have enough rest. It is important that you get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

Monitor your weight once a week.

Allot at least 40 minutes each week to doing exercises.

Take the recommended multivitamins every day.

    Before the Surgery

This kind of surgery is life-changing. It will help you lose weight by changing how you eat before and after the procedure. You have to pay particular attention to your weight weeks before the surgery. It is vital that you don’t gain weight because this can make the technical aspect of the process a lot more difficult. Two weeks before the surgery, it is mandatory that you go through a strict liquid protein diet. This will reduce your chances of having a fatty liver, which can make the procedure more dangerous.

A fatty liver is a result of the fat buildup around the spleen and liver. You have to follow a pre-operative liquid diet 2 weeks prior to the surgery. The diet is consists of the following:

Meal replacement shakes, and protein shakes

    Vegetable juice or V8

Beverages that are sugar-free (You can use sugar substitutes)

Broth and soup without any solid particle

You can consume cream of rice or cream of wheat that are extremely thin

Sip liquids very slowly. Never take them with meals, but instead, drink fluids 30 minutes after eating.

If you want to eat solids, you can have up to a couple of servings of veggies and lean meat, but your doctor needs to know and approve of it first.

There are many meal replacements, and protein shakes that you can take during this period. It is best to ask your doctor for the products that he/she recommends. To prepare a protein shake, you need to put a scoop of the protein powder in the blender along with skim milk or water. Process for 60 seconds, and it is ready to drink.

What will happen if you incur a significant increase in your weight during this period? Your doctor will need to re-evaluate your candidacy for the procedure. There is a high possibility for the procedure to get canceled and set for another date.

One day before the procedure, you can only take protein shakes. Consume clear liquids after 5 PM, such as water, Jell-O, broth, ginger ale, and tea. Do not take anything after midnight, so by the time of the procedure, your stomach will be empty. It is important that
