No one enters without a pass.
A surprisingly burly female guard stood stoically at the gate into Hameshta.
Asha Vahishtya gauged the woman, wondering how successful he would be in forcing his way past her.
The woman returned the expression with narrowed-eyes, glancing at the blade sheathed at his side while also fingering her own. Another guard exited the side door of the giant gate, this one a few inches taller than the woman.
Asha dismissed all thoughts of physical violence. Even without the reinforcements, and there were bound to be more inside, attacking her would only succeed in injuring himself.
How does one obtain a pass?
Having business with one of the holy grandmothers,
the woman guard said. She smirked before adding, And being female.
The other guard snickered. Move along now.
Asha surveyed both of them and the towering gate once more before mounting his horse. The citizens of Fowl claimed his gender was banned from entering the city, but he had thought it mere hearsay. Confirmation of this truth meant accessing its renowned library would be impossible.
He spent the long ride back to Fowl in silence, angry at himself for once again succumbing to the obsession that had driven all his thoughts and actions for five years. It had taken a massive amount of self-control and a near-fatal stabbing to successfully move beyond it ... for eight months.
Exhausted and downhearted, he arrived in Fowl at sunset. Melancholy before sleep gave way to resolve in the morning. He wouldn’t bother with regret over his relapse. Grabbing a quick breakfast, he planned to resupply at the armory, general store, and apothecary before heading out.
He had just finished paying for the elixirs at the apothecary when a man in a dusty coat entered with a small crate in his hand.
