About this ebook
After weeks at sea with nothing to show for it, the crew of the Crimson Sail is growing restless, and ready to mutiny. Only the promise of a treasure worth more than gold keep the pirates from making their own captain walk the plank, along with his beloved rats, Star and Skye.
But when a violent storm comes out of nowhere, delaying their journey to the island where the promised treasure can be found, and the treasure isn’t what any of them expected, will Star and Skye’s plan be enough to stop the pirates from leaving Captain Charlie marooned on the island? Or will their attempts to save him send them – along with the rest of the crew - to Davey Jones’ locker?

Victoria Zigler is a blind vegan poet and children's author. Born and raised in the shadow of the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, she moved away from Wales three times: once to spend six months living in Alberta, Canada, the other times to spend a few years living near Hastings on the South-East coast of England, UK, each time returning to Wales. Now she lives in Wales again, along with a chinchilla named Mollie, a West Highland White Terrier named Lilie, a Cavapoo named Logan, a Hermann’s Tortoise named Artemis, and her Canadian husband, Kelly.Despite spending far too much time in hospital, and eventually losing her sight to Congenital Glaucoma, Victoria - or Tori, if you prefer - has been writing since she knew how, with no plans to stop any time soon. So far she has published 11 poetry books and 46 children’s books. Tori is also a contributor of the sci-fi and fantasy anthology Wyrd Worlds II, as well as the Poetry Treasures anthology. Additionally, her Hermann’s Tortoise, Artemis, was featured in both the Magnificent Pets Coloring Book For Children and the Magnificent Pets Mandala Coloring Book For Adults.Vegan due to both a love for animals and dairy allergy, as well as an Eclectic Pagan, Tori describes herself as a combination of Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter books: Hermione’s thirst for knowledge and love of books, combined with Luna’s wandering mind and alternative way of looking at the world. She has a wide variety of interests, designed to exercise both the creative and logical sides of her brain, and dabbles in them at random depending on what she feels like doing at any given time, but is most likely to be found playing with her petkids, curled up somewhere with a cup of tea and a book, or trying to keep one step ahead of those pesky typo fairies while writing her own books.

This book is a work of fiction. Chapter 1
Captain Charlie and his pirate crew had been at sea for twenty-eight days and nights when there was nearly mutiny onboard the Crimson Sail.
Of course, everyone but the captain himself knew trouble had been brewing for days. But Captain Charlie had been shut up in his cabin a lot during the past few days, stroking his white beard as he pored over documents of one kind or another, and hadn’t heard the unhappy mutterings of the crew.
Ye know lads, I reckon there be no treasure,
one of them – a man who went by the name Pete - had said, a nasty sneer visible among the tangle of brown beard that covered most of the lower half of his face. Why, we’ve been a sailin’ now fer a month, an’ seen nothing’ but sea and sky in all directions.
I reckon Captain Charlie knew it an’ all,
someone else put in. Tricked us all in ter thinking’ there was treasure, just so we’d take him on a nice little sailin’ voyage one last time. We’ll get the order ter turn around any day now, an’ end up going’ back ter port empty handed.
That was how it all got started, with Pete and his closest friends sowing the seeds of doubt in the minds of the crew. After that, others started to mutter their agreement, and then the muttering spread until every last pirate aboard was muttering angrily about being tricked by the captain.
But among the crew of pirates were two unlikely crew members. They were a pair of brown rats, and their names were Star and Skye.
Now, these weren’t your ordinary rats. For one thing, they were Captain Charlie’s own personal pet rats, which is unusual aboard a pirate ship, since any rats aboard pirate ships are generally stowaways. For another thing, these rats were very smart. They were even able to read and write, and did so better than most of the pirate crew. They weren’t completely brown either, since they both had white tummies, and Star also had a white patch on her forehead. But they were the type of rat called a brown rat, which is why I called them that.
Star and Skye thought about what the crew were saying carefully, and decided the crew couldn’t be right. That didn’t sound like something anyone would do at all, and it certainly wasn’t something Captain Charlie would do. No. Star and Skye didn’t believe for one moment that the captain was trying to trick the crew.
It wasn’t so much that Captain Charlie was a nice man. He was a pirate, after all, and they weren’t exactly known for being generous souls, though Captain Charlie was one of the kinder ones, and preferred to avoid violence whenever possible. But the rats couldn’t see how Captain Charlie would gain anything from just sailing with no goal in mind, only to turn around and go home after a while. If there was nothing for him to gain from doing so, why would he do it? He wouldn’t, they reasoned.
After a while, Star and Skye decided to try and point this out to the crew of pirates. But the pirates refused to listen. It wasn’t that they couldn’t understand them, since my story takes place during the time when animals spoke the tongue of man, which is something most no longer remember how to do, having forgotten the art generations ago, when most animals realized humans didn’t like animals telling them what to do, so the animals decided there wasn’t much point in them trying to talk to us. No, the reason they didn’t listen is because pirates are stubborn, and they weren’t
