Ladies & Vettes: A Guide for the Female Corvette Enthusiast
()
About this ebook
Long-time Corvette enthusiasts, Terry Marshall, and June Bartlett noticed that the majority of the information covering Corvettes was geared towards men. Since the birth of the iconic Corvette in 1953, the Corvette has been a car associated with men. Women were pictured standing next to a Corvette looking pretty and well dressed. In Corvette’s early days’ women didn’t own, drive or even admire such a beautiful car. Times have changed and the automotive industry has changed as well. As the percentage of women who drive Corvettes continues to increase, Terry and June saw a need. They decided to write Ladies & Vettes: A Guide for the Female Corvette Enthusiast to help women learn about America’s favorite and most popular sports car.
Ladies & Vettes is for women who love sports cars, especially Corvettes. This is a book for women who want to learn more about the Corvette culture and history and who want to speak knowledgeably about her car.
“Ladies & Vettes is a book that is for us by us! That celebrates our love and respect for the corvette and doesn’t apologize for it.”-Terry Marshall and June Bartlett

Why This book
Since the birth of the iconic Corvette in 1953, the Corvette has been a car associated with men.
Women were pictured standing next to a Corvette looking pretty and well dressed. Back then women didn’t own, drive or even admire such a beautiful car.
Needless to say, times have changed and the automotive industry has changed as well. Although we still have a ways to go to dominate or make a huge mark in this industry.
Growing up, I was sort of introduced to cars by my father who always owned nice cars and kept them in good condition. We never went to car shows weren’t many at that time, in NYC during the 60’s. However, somehow I developed an admiration for classic cars and eventually Corvettes.
Why Corvettes? Throughout our travels to shows and even our website Vette Girls Online Magazine more and more women have begun to show up and show their enthusiasm for the Corvette. We thought it was time to have something written about America’s favorite sports car just for women. A book that is for us by us! That celebrates our love and respect for the Corvette and doesn’t apologize for it.
This book is for all women who love sports cars especially Corvettes. For women who want to learn more about the Corvette culture and history. For the woman who wants to speak knowledgeably about her car and hold a conversation with anyone leaving them with raised eyebrows, admiring her knowledge and love of the Corvette.
We hope that this book will enlighten, encourage and entertain you as you enjoy America’s favorite sports car, the Corvette.

THE FEMALE CORVETTE ENTHUSIAST SISTERLY PASSION
It's no secret that the auto industry is male-dominated, but wouldn’t it be nice if one day women made up at least 50% of the automotive hobby? I know sounds unrealistic right, a time where males no longer dominate the automotive industry, but I still think the world would be a cool place if more women liked cars. I think it’s time to take a serious look at the male vs. women in the auto industry. I know many females with an incredibly strong automotive passion, I’m one as well.
The point of this book isn’t to prove that there are petrol-headed women out there in the world because there are many and probably more than most people realize. It’s more about the fact that women are the minority in this male-dominated industry and the fact that everyone just seems to accept it and not do anything about it.
Why is it like this? Why aren’t more women taking an interest in the automotive world? Wheels are awesome! Motorsport is exciting! Speed is addictive! Engines are mind-blowing! Seriously, who wouldn’t want in on all this stuff?
Is it that most women just assume that you need to be physically strong, masculine or tomboyish and have a competitive nature to enjoy cars as a hobby? Perhaps these common misconceptions are partially at fault. It comes down to one simple factor really, fun. That’s the same reason I like cars.
From all the research I’ve done and all that I have been reading, I think that the majority of men come pre-programmed with some kind of attraction to things that are fast and make loud noises. The choice of cars as a hobby comes naturally to men. Now, women aren’t like this. Women, at some point, are going to need convincing that cars are fun, and not just some silly toys that men play with.
If you ask any female car enthusiast how their automotive passion began, you’ll find that at some point in their life they were exposed to the car culture in some way or form, sparking their interest in the hobby. For instance, I was introduced to cars by someone I dated. Maybe their parents took them along to car shows or motor racing throughout their childhood; perhaps they were put in a go-kart as a kid, or they watched an older brother or friend tinkering around in the garage and thought it looked pretty cool.
Unfortunately, opportunities like these aren’t as common for women, because people just assume they’re not going to like cars or know anything about them. People will argue that the reason is we are taught from birth that girls should like dolls and flowers and be cheerleaders. Well, I think now it’s the gender profiling that occurs later in life that has more of an effect.
I played with Barbie dolls as a young girl and was never surrounded by cars or motorsports as a kid. My dad and brother would have never thought to teach me about them either, but even if they had, the question is; would I have taken an interest at that time like I have now?
By taking an interest in cars you aren’t sacrificing your femininity. Newsflash ladies: you don’t have to be a tomboy to have an automotive hobby – you don’t have to be any particular type of girl whatsoever! You just have to be yourself. And all that money you’re going to spend on car parts, you would’ve just spent it on something else anyway! Like furniture or some overpriced piece of clothing you’d only wear once and it would sit in your wardrobe for ages. We’re all guilty of such indulges.
Like any industry, you can’t just say I’m a car chick
and expect the guys to drop their wrenches. As with any culture or industry, it’s important to possess the correct knowledge
