    A LITTLE HISTORY

I’m so excited that you have chosen to read these one-minute devotionals. Thought you might enjoy knowing the story behind them. First, I need to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a retired school teacher, but not retired by choice. Health issues caused that retirement, which sidelined me the end of December 2012. My husband, Alan, had a thriving deli and bbq restaurant in the small town of Jackson, Missouri, where we happily resided. He was the love of my life and we were blessed with a love for the ages. Little did I know when we married, that it would be Alan that would pass away first. So now with that little background, I can share with you how these devotionals started.

The month after I retired, Alan came home from the deli and told me we needed to talk. He said I was losing that twinkle in my eye and wanted to know what was going through my head these days. You have to realize that as a teacher I dealt with a hundred people a day, give or take a few dozens, and now I was home alone every day until Alan got home from work. I told him that I felt disconnected and he simply told me that I needed to take some responsibility for that. That caught me off guard and I asked him if we were about ready to have our first fight. He just laughed and then explained that there were literally a hundred people that would love to talk to me on any given day. I just needed to make the call, text, e-mail, or something, as he put it.

After giving that some thought and knowing he was right, I began regularly texting a handful of people. Just a few a day. Then after some time, I began texting more people each day. About two years ago, my pastor challenged all of us to be bolder in sharing our faith with those in our life. So I decided that since I was already texting a few people each day that I would start sharing the Lord with them. No one objected to those texts and before I knew it, my morning text list started growing. People started talking to Alan at the deli about my morning texts and how they needed that encouragement and looked forward to receiving them every morning. A year or so into sending those texts, people were telling me daily that I needed to write them down and put them into a devotional of some sort. Unbeknownst to me, Alan was researching Christian publishers. The day he shared with me what he had found in the way of publishers, is the day we made a plan to get a devotional published. Alan made me promise that I would see this project through. He wanted to be sure that our grandchildren and future generations had the chance to share in our faith. So the project began.

What I didn’t know was that Alan wasn’t going to be here to see this project to its completion. The Lord took Alan home very unexpectedly on June 5, 2016. Alan went to the ER around 3:30 in the morning and passed away around 1:30 that afternoon. It was such a shock to everyone. Needless to say, my world changed forever that day.

In the midst of Alan’s loss, God has been so good to me. He, and others, encouraged me to finish this devotional. Remembering my promise to Alan, I did just that. These devotions have Alan sprinkled all throughout them. The Lord has been bringing me healing as I wrote these morning devotions. I love how He does stuff like that. I get to fulfill a promise I made to Alan, and at the same time, I’m receiving healing from my Lord and Savior.

Room has been left at the bottom of each page for you to journal your thoughts and record other Scripture the Lord leads you to. My prayer for you is that these morning devotions will help you see God in even the smallest moments of your life and that they will help you trust the Lord more, even when the unexpected happens. God bless you!

Safety Found in Our Security Blankets

Good morning! I have the sweetest picture on my phone of my second granddaughter carrying around her blanket that I crocheted for her. If you want her to sleep, she has to have her blanket. I think all kids have a security blanket of some kind but it made me stop and think about what our security blankets are as adults. What helps you shut off the concerns of today and tomorrow? What helps you go to sleep at night? For me, it’s being wrapped up in the arms of God. That blanket isn’t tangible, but real nonetheless. I read a Scripture and focus on it as my security blanket. I love Psalms, so I often go there, like Psalm 18 or 23. Whatever the security blanket Scripture you use, just keep it close by for those nights that you need a little bit more peace before you sleep. Praying you can always find rest in the arms of God. Amen!

    No Need for Heavy Hearts

Good morning! My heart aches this morning. It hits all of us from time to time … a heavy heart that is. We all know someone who is struggling physically. We lift them up to the Lord and ask Him to take care of them and their families. I pray for healing, comfort, and peace. I was searching for Scripture to remind myself that God is all we ever need and Psalm 73:26 spoke to me. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Wow, that says it all! He is our strength and portion forever. What more do we need? That reminder is going on my bathroom mirror so I can read it every day. Praying you too can turn over to the Lord anything or anyone that is causing you to have a heavy heart. We can trust Him. Thank You, Jesus!

    He’s Got Your Back

Good morning! I am a big-time tennis fan! When you look at my DVR you will see a whole lot of tennis being recorded as I have the Tennis Channel as part of my TV package. I was recently watching an American doubles team, the Bryan brothers. I was struck by how they had each other’s back. Whether they win the point or not, they always acknowledge each other
