Solomon Feathers looked up at the sign, Registry, and knew he was at the right place.

It had the look of a public building, two stories high, with a black tile façade, missing numerous squares, and a skinny lawn surrounding it, mowed every other week by an old man with very bad eyesight.

Past the grimy aluminum and glass outer doors, he stood in the lobby for a moment, inspecting the directory next to the elevator, which listed numerous county offices, such as Weed and Speed, the Sheriff’s Drugged Driving Tank Team, and Mothers Without Borders, an unwed teenage parent program, as well as other welfare and social services outreach offices.

As an obviously pregnant teen angrily got off the elevator, Solomon got on.

On the second floor, he looked around, and hesitated outside the registry door.

An old classmate from grammar school, Nick Gootch, passed by and stopped.

    Feathers, is that you?

Why, yes. Nick—Nick, how are you doing? What are you up to these days?

    Working at Social Services.

    Nice.

    Yeah, how about you?

    Just stopping by the registry.

    You work there?

    No. Just stopping by.

    Nick blinked.

Oh, he said. Well, good to see you.

    Yeah, you too. Take care.

Nick then walked away, looking back over his shoulder.

Solomon resumed his stare at the door, took a deep breath, and went in.

There were a few well padded, but torn easy chairs near the door, with magazines on a table, Field and Stream, Guns and Ammo Today, and, surprisingly, American Ventriloquist. That was weird.

Solomon hesitated, as he considered sitting down and thumbing through the last mentioned magazine, but no, he had to grit his teeth, and do what he had to do.

He stood at the counter for a few moments. A county employee in a cubicle inside the office stared at a computer screen, and tapped a few keys. He looked up and saw Solomon, but continued his activities for several minutes. Solomon actually presumed it couldn’t have been the man’s job to attend to him, since he displayed such little interest, yet, after an agonizing delay, the man got up and leisurely stepped behind the counter, no more than seven or eight paces
