Excerpt from The Christmas Roast
At first, Brady was nervous about kissing Margaret in front of her family. But, her kiss was intoxicating, and he no longer cared. He just wanted to live in that moment. The two of them parted their lips. Brady stepped back, trying to imprint the image of Margaret glowing in the reflection of the Christmas lights, into his memory.
There was a crunch of snow from nearby. Brady turned and saw a chubby woman, with silver hair, walking toward them. She wore a thick green sweater and a red apron. There was a picture on the front of the apron. Brady couldn’t make out what the picture was until the woman had gotten closer. The picture looked like the little beagle that was standing nearby, and he was wearing a little Santa hat.
Hey there,
said the woman, jovially. She threw her arms around Brady and pulled him tight. I am so happy to meetcha.
Brady felt warm in the woman’s arms. He hadn’t realized how much he needed a calming, motherly hug. The woman smelled like cinnamon and wine. Brady knew that was where he was meant to be.

Chapter One
Brady Hope looked down at his watch, an old steel Fossil that he’s had since college. There were a pair of Chinese-style dragons circling the red face of the watch. The watch hands were black, which made it nearly impossible to quickly tell the time. Brady wore it because it still looked cool, and it was his lucky watch.
He had worn it when he lost his virginity and had been wearing it when he interviewed for the programmer spot at DeeDub Software. A position he was way underqualified for. But he had knocked the interview out of the park, was offered a position on the spot and had been there ever since. Brady had also been wearing the watch when he met Margaret. If everything went as planned in the next two days, he would be wearing it when he proposed to her on Christmas morning. They had only been together a few months, but they had been the best months of Brady’s life. Margaret was his soul mate.
The watch’s face read 5:00 p.m. It was time to go. Brady hopped out of his leather chair, closed his laptop and turned off the two large computer monitors sitting on his oak desk. As he headed for the door to his office, his friend, Millard, appeared.
I was just coming to make sure you were heading out,
he said.
Nice outfit Milly,
Brady said to him, staring at his clothes—a Santa cap, an itchy-looking Christmas sweater, a pair of cargo shorts and flip-flops. I appreciate your concern, and yes, I’m outta here.
Where you headed, again?
Millard asked. You know, in case you go missing.
Brady looked at his friend, who had a knack for saying the most bizarre things with the most deadpan delivery. He never knew if Millard was joking or not. We’re going to Margaret’s family farm in eastern Colorado. She’s been telling me how important it is to be with her family during Christmas. They have all sorts of traditions. I’m actually pretty excited to be going.
I can’t believe you’re gonna turn down Christmas at the beach for cold-ass Colorado.
Love makes you do mysterious things,
Brady said, passing Millard
