Preface
Welcome, and thank you for choosing Total Guitar Technique.
When we begin learning guitar, the emphasis is often on what we do—not how we do it. We focus on learning new patterns, playing the right notes, avoiding the wrong notes, and trying to keep it all in time. Foundational concepts like body position, relaxed movement, and efficiency of motion are commonly overlooked in the battle to just get our fingers to go where we want them!
The good news is, with some practice and persistence, what seemed so difficult at first becomes much easier. This initial struggle to produce something that sounded even vaguely musical slowly fades. The bad news is, the counterproductive playing habits we develop along the way don’t disappear so easily. Playing tendencies that we learn early on become the framework for everything we do on guitar. From the way we position our body to the mechanics of moving our hands, it’s very difficult to play with accuracy, speed, and consistency when our basic technique works against us.
This handbook is a combination of personal experience, trial and error, observation, and study from more than 20 years of guitar playing. The further your playing advances, the more you realize that how you do something directly impacts what you can do. Even experienced guitar players can encounter all kinds of basic issues, simply because they’ve learned to view their limiting playing habits as normal.
