About this ebook

Welcome to Flowerhill Medical Center in glamorous and dangerous Los Angeles, California. Orderly and disciplined administrator Jennifer Carlisle has arrived at just the wrong time; controversy is looming over the hospital, and if Jennifer can't figure out a way to stop the onslaught of controversy; budgetary fallouts and other pressures may bring Flowerhill and everybody in it to their knees.

But there's even more on Jennifer's plate. Her father Burton is the Chief of Surgery at Flowerhill, which drudges up old feelings and insecurities. Also contributing to those insecurities is dashing and intriguing surgeon Dr. Parker Stone, something of a rascal but much more a champion of patients' rights; a dedicated lifesaver who is more than attractive to Jennifer. Ethical and practical considerations abound, forbidden fruit hanging too close together.

Can these two find love in each other's arms, or will social pressures do more than simply tear them apart? Will greed prevail, will innocence die, as well as countless innocent people? Everything is on the line, and all rests squarely on Jennifer's shoulders. Though it seems Jennifer cannot succeed, she absolutely cannot afford to fail!

    CHAPTER ONE

Jennifer Carlisle pushed through the picket line, keeping her head down. The protestors had isolated every reasonable entry to the hospital, carrying signs reading, Cures Not Costs! and Keep Our Hospitals OURS! While they weren’t violent, they certainly were loud. And there were camera crews everywhere, mics sticking out of the angry mobs.

    Somebody shouted, Monster! Greedy bitch!

Another hollered, You better hope you never get sick!

Sicker than you already are, somebody else called out.

Jennifer held a hand up to her face, and hated herself for having to do it. She had been told strictly not to interact with them, and of course it would have been much more orderly and businesslike to have no protests at all. But she sympathized and understood their perspective, could even see herself protesting among them if such a thing weren’t so promisingly chaotic and disorganized.

But they’re not necessarily wrong, Jennifer was ready to admit.

You can run, but you can’t hide, one protestor shouted.

Children are dying, don’t you care about that?

What do they want from me? I’m not in favor of selling the hospital!

How much are they paying you to put us all on a death list?

Death list? Oh, that’s too much!

Okay, look, Jennifer turned and said, just stop it! You’re talking about things you don’t understand! Well, Jennifer thought, so much for discipline.

"How many people have to die in there for you to understand?"

Rocky Mountain General Hospital has a superb survival rate, thank you very much!

Now, somebody shouted, but not after you sell us out to those coastal investors!

Excuse me, somebody said, a very reasonable and professional voice, "Sonny Dae, Channel 9 News. You work for the hospital."

I’m one of the hospital administrators, yes.

The gorgeous blonde with the mic touched her finger to the earpiece in her ear, paused for a moment, then turned to Jennifer. You’re ... Margaret Odom?

    Jennifer Carlisle.

Sonny nodded and went on, "The fact is that hospitals like Rocky Mountain General are being privatized all over the country. With fees and costs as high as they are in this field, why is there a need to sell these hospitals to private owners, to operate them at an even greater profit? You better than most people would know just why this is
