      Chapter One: A Stagnant Life

      Maria has been upset for the last three months since finding out that the small junior college in our town would no longer need her services. After four years as one of their math instructors, my wife was laid off unceremoniously with a certified letter sent to our home during summer break. It came as a complete shock, as we had heard nothing about the financial troubles the college had found itself in last year. Maria isn’t the only non-tenured college instructor to lose her job, but it feels terribly personal to her. Though I have tried to soften the quiet outrage she has felt, she is her own woman. She needed this job when she got it for the sake of having something to do that she felt was productive.

      Honey, you don’t have to work, I tell her as I rub her shoulders. Maria doesn’t turn to look up at me as she sits quietly in a chair at our dining room table staring at her iPad. She has been looking at classifieds in a local social media group in hopes of finding something similar to what she has lost with the college. Unfortunately, there just aren’t any other colleges or universities within driving distance.

      I’m so sick of this feeling, she tells me as she sighs. I squeeze her shoulders gently as I grimace. Maria is everything to me, so seeing her this way causes me to feel terrible for her.

      But we are good financially. My job as a project engineer pays plenty for us to live very well. Maria, you should take a year off to just enjoy life a little. A job somewhere will eventually open up.

      My wife turns to look up at me with her dark brown eyes. It’s easy for you to say that, Doug. You have a job and you get to leave the house every morning to do it. What do I have? All I am is little Suzy Homemaker to you. She turns with a huff and crosses her arms as she looks back at her iPad screen. Maria is angry about her current situation and offering to let her simply sit around for a year is not exactly the motivation she is wanting from me.

      I’m sorry, Maria. I really am. Unfortunately, we can’t change this situation right now. You are unemployed, and it sucks. Even so, you can’t spend every day staring at this screen and crying over the lack of teaching jobs. I reach down and use my finger to scroll the screen downward. As I come across a group of help wanted advertisements, I say to my wife, There are plenty of jobs available if you want something to do temporarily. Some even pay around ten dollars an hour.

      Shit, Maria mutters as she wipes a few tears from her face. I am not going to take a job at a gas station, Doug. I’m a math instructor, remember? I have a master’s degree in mathematics.

      Look, I know that it would not be the sort of job you would want to keep for the rest of your life. You can take a job temporarily as you wait for a teaching position to open up somewhere.

      My wife shakes her head. Why would I do that, Doug? It’s ridiculous for a former college instructor to take a job like that. Or even that. She points as an advertisement for a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Can you imagine what that would do to my hands?

      I chuckle a little, though I know better than to do so. Still, her persistence in refusing to take any other job is so thorough that I can’t help myself. Maria, you need to let go of this attitude if you want to do something with your time for a while. There are no teaching jobs for you in your area of study as of today.

      Not even the local high school wants me, she moans as she shakes her head. My wife pushes her chair back from the table and I back away to allow her to stand to her feet. My life is fucked right now.

      Maria, come on. I follow her to the kitchen counter where she picks up the coffee pot. Pouring herself a small cup of coffee, she takes a sip before turning to look at me. You have a job, Doug. You have purpose for your life. All I have is constant boredom and a desire to be more involved with life than just sitting around here. I’m tired of sitting around here.

      I know you are, my love. This is why you need to just accept a smaller job for a while until you can find something more suitable to your talents. Otherwise, there just isn’t much for you to choose from.

      There has to be. I won’t be forced into a low paying job to pump gasoline or wash dishes, Doug. It’s not what I want.

      Well, we don’t always get exactly what we want, do we? I wish I had not said this as soon as it comes out of my mouth. Life is hard, Maria.

      What did you mean by that? she asks as she narrows her eyes at me. At five-feet-two-inches and a hundred pounds, my black-haired Latina wife can be a spitfire if she feels like she has been insulted.

      I didn’t mean anything by it, honey. It is just a fact of life that we both get dealt some things in life that don’t meet our expectations. Being upset about it and complaining won’t help things.

      Are you talking about me personally, Doug? Is there something you want to say about me? She steps up to me and stares directly into my eyes. My small wife can be very intimidating at times.

      Please, honey. There’s nothing to what I said that should offend you.

      She shakes her head. My life has become stagnant, and all you can think about is sex.

      Uh, that’s not the problem and you know it. I’m not the one always thinking about sex.

      Maria’s small body shakes as she pokes a finger into my chest. I don’t always think about sex. It’s just that I like having sex and you don’t seem all that interested in it. Doug, there are men out there who would love to have a wife like me.

      I nod my head. You are absolutely correct. There are a lot of men who would like to have sex two and three times every day, but I can’t do it. Honey, I didn’t mean anything about your need for sex with my comment. Please, let’s just get past this. My wife, as beautiful a woman as I have ever known, is somewhat of a nympho. She likes sex. No, let me rephrase that. She loves sex. She craves it to the point that she will haunt me all day long through text messages, emails, and phone conversations while I am at work. Most of her messages to me have to do with sex in some regard, and there have been a couple of times that I have had to temporarily block her phone number to stop being bothered at work. I love Maria a great deal, but I just can’t keep up with her sexually.

      You would prefer that I just give up sex. Maybe that is the way you feel about my career as well.
