About this ebook

Suddenly she stepped off the road. Taking Satan with her, she went under the muddy water. Coming up for air, she struggled to reach the road. She was drifting further away. Reaching down with her feet, she could not find anything solid to stand on. Holding her cat with one arm, she could not pull herself against the current.
Moving over on her back, she floated downstream. She felt her shoes pulling at her neck. Flipping her head sideways, she allowed them to go. She knew her mother would be angry with her for losing them. She tried to keep herself upright and hold her cat's head above the water. Seeing she was floating further from the road, she began screaming into the darkness.

    Prologue

Indian Chief Black Cloud had warned Rose of the impending flood that would cover their land for miles. When she told those at the trial no one believed her except her mother. Captain Bollinger ignoring the warning decided to leave with his wounds back to the fort. Even Mr. Broden, Mary Beth’s father ignored the warning taking his family back home

    1 Escape

The wind had kicked up. The black clouds began to roll in. They all knew it was going to be a bad storm.

Captain Bollinger and his troopers had departed. The others quickly dispersed before the weather arrived wanting to see to their livestock. Mrs. Donovan was busy upstairs while Rose and Mr. Donovan were securing the animals in the barn. The wind had increased making it hard to hear each other outside.

Mr. Donovan was forcing the last cow inside while Rose held the door open. You better head for the house after this, Mr. Donovan yelled, I'll finish up here!

Rose nodded and closed the door. Putting her head down, she ran for the kitchen door. Her father placed the door latch and followed her. Coming up behind her, he forced her quickly inside.

They found the kitchen full of bags Mrs. Donovan had been packing. She came down the stairs with another handful of treasured items.

I want to take this with us, she said. I know they're not practical, but it's all we have of when Rose was a baby.

Mr. Donovan, shaking his head, asked, What are you doing, woman?

Getting ready to leave of course, she replied. You have the wagon ready?

The wagon's in the barn with everything else. This is not the time to be going anyplace.

The black clouds are here. That means the water is coming.

Just because some Injun says we're going to have a flood, don't make it so.

It wasn't some Injun! It was Chief Black Cloud.

Mr. Donovan saw her determined look, Okay, where would you like to take everything? It's getting dark and the storm is about here. If you would rather be out there getting wet and cold instead of inside your warm house so be it.

We will take everything to the school house. The ground is higher. We'll spend the night there. You just placed a new roof on it. It should stay dry.

You're getting to be as crazy as that old Injun. Okay, I'll get the wagon out again. He turned back to go outside and yelled over his shoulder, You can give me a hand, Rose.

You better be taking anything you want to keep, she yelled after him.

He threw open the kitchen door, and walked out mumbling to himself, Crazy woman! Crazy woman!

Rose looked at her mother. She nodded for her to follow her father. Quickly Rose caught the door coming back and pushed her way outside. The sun was about gone. She could see the huge dark clouds approaching fast. The storm would catch them outside if they didn't hurry.

Her father already had the barn door open. She helped him pull the wagon out and put on the sides and canvas cover. He went back for the horse and yelled over his shoulder, Go help your mother load the wagon.

Her mother was already coming out of the house with her first load of pots and pans. She motioned for Rose to take them. Working together they had most of the bundles in the wagon before Mr. Donovan had the horse in his harness.

Coming up beside him, she said, I'll need help with the dresser and tables.

    Are we taking everything?

I'll not be leaving them to the water and have them ruined.

Okay! Okay! He said and started for the house.

You better be getting the cows hooked up Rose, she continued, No sense in leaving them behind. Then turning, she followed Mr. Donovan into the house, saying under her breath, I better be helping him. In his mood he'll probably bang everything up.

Rose watched until her mother looked back, Get along girl! We don't have much time!

Yes Mama! Rose said and ran for the barn. Inside she found the three cows eating contentedly. She ran a rope through the halter of the first one and pulled, but the cow had no intention of moving outside into the cold wind.

Ignoring her, the cow continued to eat until Rose jerked the hay bin away. The cow looked at her
