Jack Norton
Hi, I’m Jack Norton. I am an Emmy Award winning American writer currently wandering around Europe. I love travel, reading, smoking lots of weed, collecting old records, eating raw vegan food, practicing yoga and obsessing over other people’s dogs and cats. I am married to my high school sweetheart Kitty.I am fiercely independent and always have been. I self-released my first album when I was just a kid back in 1997 and I self-published my first book way back in 2001. That was long before the days of indie authors and ebooks! Over the years, Kitty and I have created record labels, booking agencies, film and television production companies, publishing houses and more.Currently my focus is as a writer and publisher - authoring books across many genres from nonfiction (music business, motivation, musicology) to fiction (thrillers, steamy romance and pulps), poetry and memoirs. I also have a daily blog and host several podcasts. When I was a kid, Tiny Tim (the guy that sang “Tip-Toe Through The Tulips”) was my babysitter and neighbor. He taught me how to play the ukulele! When I was in elementary school I was a totally weirdo (I guess things never really change). I was obsessed with writing and music history. I started trading correspondence with authors Hubert Selby, Jr. and Nick Tosches. I also befriended musicians Tom Waits and Leon Redbone while I was still in middle school. I attended an Arts High School which is where I met my soulmate Kitty. Together we failed our way through high school and I graduated earning the lowest possible grade...while still being allowed to get a diploma. I remember the principal telling us that we would never have a career in the arts and that I specifically was a total failure as a creative artist and as a human being. Two decades have since passed and I have made my living solely as a professional working artist. In fact, I have no resume or job history - other than pursuing my own schemes and dreams over the years!Along the way, I taught myself how to be a filmmaker and ended up getting into the world of corporate video production. My clients included: the Pentagon (US Department of Defense), MTV, Disney Channel, Interscope, Island-Def Jam, KidzBop, Sony, Whole Foods and even Justin Bieber. I also directed dozens of music videos, short films and a few features as well. My 2015 feature length documentary film Jug Band Hokum included appearances by humorist Garrison Keillor, bluesman Charlie Parr and Grammy winning rap legends Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. The film had a successful run at major film festivals and independent cinemas around the world. And our entire production budget was $600.I love working through limitations and finding creative ways of self-producing creative content!Kitty and I co-created and self-financed a kids television show that ended up earning six regional Emmy Award nominations and was broadcast on over 150 PBS member stations nationwide and in 175 countries on the AFN Family Channel on Trinity Broadcasting Network. We spent just under ten thousand dollars to make the entire series. At the time, one reviewer called it “Barney meets the Black Eyed Peas”, because we were doing electro hip-hop music for preschoolers. LOL.Speaking of film stuff, I am a horrible actor but somehow I have appeared in a few films, including roles opposite Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern in Wilson (2016) and an unfortunate stint as a prisoner in the Tom Six cult horror film The Human Centipede III: Final Sequence (2015). In 2017, we wrote and performed four original songs for the Oscar nominated Willem Dafoe film The Florida Project (A24) which was made by director Sean Baker (Tangerine). The Florida Project premiered at the 49th edition of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight as part of the Cannes Film Festival. Pretty wild stuff.I no longer performing live, however over the years I have opened for: Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Dave Van Ronk, Leon Redbone and the Squirrel Nut Zippers (to name a few). A few years ago, Kitty and I were given the incredible opportunity to perform in 19 countries for the US Pentagon, where we entertained military families in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. We’ve also performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC and at the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee. We actually lived in Nashville for a while and really loved our time in Music City!In late 2019, we released Two Stalkers One Goal, a memoir co-written with Kitty. It is an inspiring book offering hope and healing for victims of stalking, cyberstalking, narcissistic abuse, gossip and bullying. We are survivors of a story so crazy that, well, you just have to read the book! ;)This is a great time to be a creative artist and independent creator. The makers movement has only just begun and I couldn’t be more grateful to be along for the wild ride through the golden age of creative content.Connect with me at:http://www.jackandkitty.comhttp://www.instagram.com/mrjacknortonhttp://www.twitter.com/mrjacknorton

Who I Am And Why You Should Listen
CHAPTER PREVIEW
I know what you're thinking: Oh great, yet another book on the music business
. Well, this book is different from every music business book I have ever read - and at this point in my life, I've read hundreds (if not thousands). I'm not going to tell you any hypotheticals. I am not going to tell you how the music business works in Los Angeles, New York City or Nashville (although I have vast experience in each city). I am not going to tell you how to win a reality TV show singing contest.
I am only going to tell you real life, working class, day in day out, musician war stories. And the amazing lessons I learned from living them. I guarantee that if you follow this book - which essentially is a lesson plan, you will make money. If you listen to my warnings and learn from my total and utter f**k-ups, you will make even more money. And if you follow my advice you will book gigs - LOTS and LOTS of gigs - and in doing so, you will make even more money - potentially daily. How good would it feel to deposit a check every single day because of your music? You can! If you follow the structure of this book, you can be playing good paying gigs every day of your life. Trust me, the money adds up quick!
First, I'd like to tell you more about myself - so you know that if someone like me can do it, you certainly can too.
MY BACKGROUND
HOMELESS, NO RESOURCES, NO FAMILY
I am almost forty years old. I started making money from the music business when I was ten years old. This means I have made a living through music for thirty years - three very full, very fun, very crazy decades. I grew up in Minneapolis and now live in New York City. I have played an average of 300 shows a year for the past twenty years. Seriously. It's insane. I'm sure I've played well over 6,000 shows at least.
Did I go to school for this? No.
Do I have a college degree in music? Hell no. I don't even have a college degree period. And now I'm writing a book!
Do I come from a rich family? No. Definitely not.
Remember when I said I started making money from music when I was ten years old? That's true. My first gig
was playing a tiny toy keyboard (I found at Goodwill) at a church youth service. The minister knew I was interested in music and played (very poorly) this keyboard. He asked if I could sing two songs for the kids in my youth group. I don't know why, but I said yes
. I played (again, very poorly) Michael Row The Boat Ashore
and Kumbaya, My Lord
. After the service, the minister asked me to stay behind. He dumped the donation plates on a large folding table in the fellowship hall and asked me to help count the money.
$111 was donated that morning.
The minister said I earned 10% of that money. He gave me $11 and called it even.
I remember sitting on the steps of our apartment building staring and the two five dollar bills and at the one. I couldn't believe it. I could make money by making music!
From that day on, I made a commitment to use my talent to make money and take me far, far away from the world I knew.
And by the way - a postscript to this story - looking back at it as an adult now, I'm sure that this minister was just trying to find an uplifting way of giving a kid in a hopeless situation a tiny ray of hope. I'm sure his gesture was meant to build my self-esteem and to help me out. It definitely changed my life - I learned one of the most important lessons ever: YOU DESERVE TO MAKE MONEY FOR YOUR MUSIC.
It's true about my music and it's true about yours. We as artists deserve to get paid. And paid well. We make life worth living for the masses. So don't short change yourself. Know your worth. I can guarantee it's more than you think it is!
By the time I was sixteen I was out of the house.
I spent two years homeless: staying at friend's houses, living in a non-running van and sleeping overnight at a few different local diners.
I learned all the tricks of a homeless person: which places were friendly to you if you sat in the corner, ordered a coffee and leaned back to catch a few hours of shut eye. I learned how not to get hassled by cops for sleeping in my busted van. I learned how to read a friend's body language when they really wanted you off their couch.
More importantly, during this time I learned that my guitar was truly my best friend.
A GUITAR
The one constant in my life has been my guitar. It's never let me down and it's always by my side. I learned early on that an acoustic guitar is the easiest way to make a quick buck too. By the time I was starting my senior year of high school, I had graduated from busking the streets of Minneapolis for a few bucks per afternoon, to playing small coffee shops which guaranteed at least $25, some coffee beans and a tip jar which usually resulted in another $20 or so. I'd trade someone in the audience my coffee beans for half the price of whatever the joint was selling them for, and make a few more dollars that way.
A COMPUTER
It wasn't until I got my first laptop did my entire world change, however. Instead of cruising the streets of Minneapolis looking for handouts and singing songs here and there, I sat at the public library and squatted their WiFi. I begin to use my computer to search for other venues I could play. I slowly began to build a small website - of course, it was horrible looking as this was the days of Angelfire
. Way before things like Myspace
were even a reality. Even though social media was a decade or so away, I realized that the internet and a guitar were a remarkable combination for almost guaranteed success.
Don't worry, I'll talk more about why this is later.
WHERE I AM TODAY
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
As I mentioned, I've been at this music game for nearly thirty years. I've made my living by my voice, guitar and computer for this entire time. I have no other job history. If I were to apply for a traditional
job, I would have no past bosses to list on my resume for a recommendation. I am my own boss. I stay up until I want to go to bed, and I sleep until I want to wake up. I choose where to spend my time and I have no set schedule - other than the one I create and design for myself.
I have lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Paris and Miami. But I love Minneapolis - it's home and always will be. I have played gigs in 38 countries around the world. I can tell you what jazz music sounds like in Turkey and I can tell you what clubs will pay you in Saudi Arabia. I can also tell you where to buy the best gelato in all of Italy. Seriously. I have played in Paris. Rome. Tokyo. But I've also done a ton of s**thole bar gigs in Iowa. I have met celebrities at our gigs, and I have earned several prestigious songwriting awards.
I have paid all my bills on time (or in advance) thanks to my guitar and my laptop.
TOUR SCHEDULE
I currently am earning enough from my live performances to be very strategic with my tour schedule. For the last five years or so, I play live gigs from May through August. I pre-pay all of my bills from September through the following May. And I take the rest of the year off
. That means from September through May I don't have to play a single gig and all of my bills are completely paid.
You can have this kind of lifestyle too - you just need to work your butt off and follow my advice.
ANNUAL INCOME
My personal annual income varies from year to year, as is the case for most independent artists that consider themselves entrepreneurs. However, I can tell you this: my BEST income year was just over $400,000. I did this as a solo artist the year after the Great Recession too! Remember, escape through entertainment will always be recession-proof!
My annual income for the past five years in a row has averaged out to be $149,000 per year. I live with my partner and have no children. I don't know many people making nearly $150K annually that don't have a college degree or a master's degree even!
Thanks, guitar and laptop.
THE FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT
BUT TOURING IS TOUGH
You may be asking yourself: Why are you writing this book?
That's a good question. The answer is fairly simple. I have been on the road basically non-stop for twenty years straight. I don't use a closet - I use a suitcase. I don't use my bathroom cabinet for toiletries - I use a small backpack. I'm looking to settle down. I want to go to yoga classes regularly. I want to see our friends on weekends and not be playing some s**thole club in Toledo instead. I want a dog. I want to actually go see shows in my own town - as a fan for once!
