    Introduction

    Guided hypnosis (or hypnotherapy) and guided meditation are topics enshrouded in mystery and ignorance despite the growth rates of their popularity in the modern, western world. The only thing matching the growth of their popularity in the west is the continuously-expanding body of scientific knowledge swirling around them.

    The most obvious differences between these are their goals, despite the seemingly similar routes each practice takes to get there. The differences aren't only in their histories, but also in the potential benefits and harms of either method. Meditation, for example, has been long considered solely as an important part of a spiritual journey that has to do with attaining enlightenment of the higher powers that be and all there is, usually by first detaching from this earth and its desires that hinder spiritual growth. On the other hand, hypnosis was considered being part of a much darker art that was often associated with witchcraft and mind control, with the media often painting it as a tool that could dull the senses and hijack the will of an individual, or maybe even a crowd, despite scientists using it to treat several ailments and conditions of the mind and body for centuries now.
