    Introduction

    ――――― ❖❖❖ ―――――

    Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

    Do you remember what it felt like when you were a kid and you realized for the first time what you wanted to be in life? Maybe it was a firefighter, a police officer, an astronaut, or a doctor—regardless of what you wanted to be, do you remember what it felt like to be so sure and so full of purpose? Your little kid self had a clarity of vision that was positively awe-inspiring, but then, life got in the way. That bright-eyed, hopeful kid grew up, and along the way, you watched as things didn’t go exactly as that positive, forward-looking child was certain they would.

    It’s easy to get lost in your daily living, paying the bills, and working for vacations. Maybe you come home to an equality busy spouse, and maybe you get a little wistful when your own children dream about their future. You find it harder to dream about the future for yourself, and you find it hard to even think about it. Maybe, you’re not even sure who you are on the inside anymore. That little kid was positive about who he or she was, and what life would bring, but now you have all kinds of doubts; you believe you’ve lost yourself along the way.

    If you find that now you are feeling dissatisfied with the way things turned out in your life, or if you’re just starting out but already you feel lost, then this book can help. If you’ve ever wondered if you can turn things around—no matter your age—well, again, this book can help. This book will take you on a journey of self-discovery. We’ll identify and describe clear steps that you can take to find that positive, certain, awe-inspiring little you again, and through using this book, you will re-discover yourself and your vision for your life. It might not be the same vision you had as a child, but it will be your vision, and you will understand, maybe for the first time in your life, who you are and what you really want. Once you understand your true nature, you can see the obstacles that prevent you from achieving your goals much clearer. When you understand yourself and your obstacles, you can make conscious decisions about what you want and how to get it.

    The book is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the following goals:

    Understanding the building blocks of identity;

    Identifying the essence behind your true needs;

    How to disassociate from your past and from any labels that may be hindering your growth;

    Why many people are stuck in never-ending cycles of pain;

    How to break the cycles of pain, and;

    How to understand your true self.

    The second part of the book is made up of 365 introspective questions that will break down every area of your life and help you pin down what it is you want to accomplish in each one of them. These areas are:

    Health

    Wealth, Career, and Business

    Family, Friends, and Relationships

    Recreation

    Mind and Emotions

    Contribution and Spirituality

    Finally, the third part will give you practical instruction on how to take the answers to the questions you asked in Part Two to determine what you want to do with your life, how to set goals toward doing that, and how to achieve the goals you set. It will also discuss maintaining a successful life, and finally, how to overcome setbacks.

    This book is dedicated to helping your find your life’s purpose and achieve it. It will do that in a step-by-step and clearly articulated way. It will help you to first understand your true nature, then define the goals you have for the various areas of your life, and finally, it will help you lay out a plan for achieving, updating as necessary, and maintaining those goals. In short, it will show you how to live a fulfilling life—and not just any fulfilling life, but the life you always wanted to create for yourself.

    The process might be painful at times, as you delve deeply into your past and your own core beliefs, but the pain will be worth the gain. Once you have a clear understanding of who you are and what has brought you here now, you can overcome the obstacles you face as you move forward into a bright new life, which will be the life you always knew you were destined to live. Remember, it’s the journey, not a destination. When you apply the steps described in this book to fully understand your own path, you will view the journey as exciting and new, and yes, even awe-inspiring. There is no better reason than that to get started right away. So buckle up, because here we go!

    Part One: You

    Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. -Carl Jung

    This part of the book is dedicated to helping you understand exactly who you are. We’ll examine the following concepts:

    The building blocks of identity;

    The essence behind your true needs;

    How to disassociate from your past and from any labels that may be hindering your growth;

    Why many people are stuck in never-ending cycles of pain;

    How to break the cycles of pain; and

    How to understand your true self.

    We will start by understanding identity.

    Chapter One: Who are You? Finding Your Identity

    ――――― ❖❖❖ ―――――

    You might already be thinking, I know who I am, but do you really? How is it that you tend to identify yourself? You might, for example, say I’m John, or, I’m Susan, but that’s merely your name—not necessarily who you are. You might also say, I’m an accountant, or, I’m a truck driver, but that’s your occupation and still not who you are. You might identify yourself by some other association—for example, I’m a Christian, or, I’m Jewish, but once again, that’s your religion, so not who you are. So then, who are you? Let’s start by identifying self-identity, and how it gets formed.

    What is Identity?

    Your identity can be defined as a collection of beliefs about yourself (Leflot et al., 2010), that generally answer the question, Who am I? (Meyers, 2009). Another way to describe identity is the way you look at yourself and your relationship to the world around you (Dobson, 2019). and yet another way includes the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks, and/or expressions that make up a person or a group (Revolvy, n.d.). But what do these definitions really mean?

    Well, for one thing, your identity tends to be composed of permanent attributes, rather than temporary ones. For example, I am tired is a statement about yourself, but it is a temporary condition and not something you would say to describe your general nature. On the other hand, something like, I am lazy is a value judgment that describes a permanent character trait, which could be part of your identity. Just a note here—permanent does not mean it can’t be changed, just that it is something enduring. Maybe, for example, you’re lazy because you’re not excited about your life. Once you get excited about what you’re doing with your life, you might find your laziness disappearing altogether!

    In general, your self-identity is composed of, relatively-speaking, permanent self-assessments about your personality traits, your abilities and skills, your occupation or hobbies, and your physical characteristics. Additionally, your self-identity is not something that is restricted to the present, as it can also include your past or future self. For example, you might understand that you have changed completely from what you used to be, and that change might be positive or negative depending on your own judgment in how you have changed. Still, the old you represents your past self.

    You might also have dreams of what you might become at some point in the future. Again, you might view that as something positive or something negative depending on your personal situation. You might dream of becoming a great leader, but you might fear you’ll become corrupt. Your future self, therefore, represents your perception of what you might become, what you want to become, and what you’re afraid you will become, and these perceptions are based on your hopes, fears, values, goals, and perceived threats. These ideas or visions for your future can be either positive incentives for future behavior or cautionary tales. Both your past and future selves serve to provide you with a context, within which you evaluate and/or interpret your current self. You might think, for example, Right now, I’m just a clerk working in the mailroom, but someday I’m going to lead this company. You are evaluating a part of your present identity based on your vision for the future.

    The concept of self-identity can be distinguished from self-awareness and self-esteem. Self-awareness is the extent to which you can define your understanding of the self, relative to your current attitudes and dispositions. It’s an awareness of the self; whereas, self-identity is the definition of the self. For example, part of your self-identity might be that you are a harsh critic of yourself and others. Self-awareness would be a recognition that, in being critical, you can sometimes be cruel and overly judgmental; you are recognizing or aware of how an attribute of your identity might affect your behavior.

    Self-esteem relates to how your judge your concept of self. For example, if you are a harsh critic, you might judge that as positive or negative, and you might think, "I set high standards, so if you don’t meet those standards, I will let you know. I’m a
