The author, Fred Kerr, was introduced to the world of industrial railways in 1956 when his parents moved from Edinburgh to Corby in Northamptonshire, where the local steelworks offered a mix of locomotives from several manufacturers. When steam traction finished on BR in August 1968, Fred's interest in railways continued with diesel and electric traction, whilst retaining a passing interest in industrial locomotives through his visits to the heritage lines which were initiated in the post-Beeching era.When the author converted to digital photography in 2001, he visited many heritage lines as he sought to gain experience in the digital world. When he looked back after a decade of digital photography, he noted that industrial locomotives were still at work on many heritage lines throughout the UK. He also noted that during the 1960s the effort to preserve mainline steam traction had overlooked the availability of industrial locomotives, leading to the scrapping of many locomotives with both a story to tell and an incomplete working life.The result is a book that pays tribute to industrial locomotives which are still at work by detailing the manufacturers of these workhorses and the locomotives which they built; identifying their working lives where possible; showing their entry into preservation and paying tribute to those heritage lines which appreciated the value of these unsung heroes of the Industrial Revolution by buying the 'scrap' locomotives then restoring them to working order.

Fred Kerr was born in Edinburgh in 1948 where he gained an interest in railway locomotives from both the LMSR and LNER companies whose services permeated the local network. When his parents moved to Corby in 1956 the local steelworks provided further interest from its mix of freight services, including seeing the last of the Beyer Garrets and the replacement Standard Class 9Fs whilst the industrial locomotives of the internal steelworks network offered further insight into the variety of steam locomotives. This was a time of change and during the 1960s the interest in locomotives included the new order of diesel and electric traction without reducing the interest in steam traction. While his interest in Diesel Traction led to his early involvement with the Diesel & Electric Group and its preservation activities during the 1970s, his move to Southport in 1982 restored his opportunities to return to his first love of viewing steam locomotives at work and this album records some of the locations that he chose to visit and the locomotives that he was able to photograph.Today his interest continues as a life member of the A4 Locomotive Society, Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and Ribble Steam Railway whilst he also support bodies concerned with preserving steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and infrastructure extensions.

    The company’s owners had been producing locomotives since 1832 but their earlier companies had gone into administration. The 1864 company finally succeeded and produced many steam locomotives, including some to the designs of these earlier companies, as well as designing ‘fireless’ locomotives and diesel locomotives. In 1972 the company was taken over by the Hunslet Engine Company but subsequent takeovers and amalgamations saw it become part of the USA-owned Wabtec Group of companies in 2015; its main activity thereafter was geared to coaching stock repairs and modifications.

    1147 hauls a Riversway-Strand Rd shuttle alongside the Riverside Walk, adjacent to the River Ribble, on 17 September 2011.

    1147 shunts stock at the shed during an evening photo charter on 5 February 2010.

    0-4-0ST 1147 ‘John Howe’ was built in 1908 to the order of Howe’s Plaster Works located near Cumwhinton in Cumbria but, as at 2015, it is preserved by the Ribble Steam Railway located in the Preston Dock complex.

    The Ribble Steam Railway includes a Museum wherein it displays locomotives which are either awaiting restoration or are surplus to requirements but worthy of retaining for display purposes. Included in the collection are a number of Barclay 0-4-0ST locomotives, including:

    1598 ‘Efficient’, delivered to McKechnie Brothers copper smelting works at St Helens in 1918, being displayed on 17 September 2011.

    1969 ‘ J.N. Derbyshire’, delivered to Carlisle Plaster & Cement Company of Cumwhinton in 1929, being displayed on 23 February 2011.

    1865 ‘Alexander’, delivered to Southall Gas Works in 1926, being displayed on 23 February 2011.

    0-6-0T 1245 was supplied to the Carron Iron Company of Falkirk in 1911; as at 2016 it Is preserved at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway where it was stabled in Haverthwaite shed on 6 March 2015.

    The Ribble Steam Railway has a comprehensive workshops facility where:

    0-4-0ST 2261, supplied to the National Coal Board in 1949, is now resident and where it was noted being overhauled in the workshop facility on 23 February 2011.

    Being displayed in the shed yard on 18 February 2012 prior to being repainted.

    The company was one of the largest builders of fireless locomotives, building 114 examples between 1913-1961, with an example, 0-4-0F 1950 ‘Heysham No. 2’, being displayed in the Ribble Steam Railway’s museum on 17 September 2011.

    0-4-0ST 2134 was supplied to British Gypsum in 1942 and was a display item at the Open Day held by the West Coast Railway Company at its Carnforth site on 26 July 2008.

    0-6-0T 1605 ’Ajax’ was supplied to the Harlaxton Quarries (by Grantham) in 1918 but as at 2015 is now preserved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway where it was displayed at its Haven Street base on 8 June 2010.

    The company was sub-contracted during World War II to build locomotives to the Hunslet Engine Company Class 50555 0-6-0ST design (see HE: Hunslet Engine Company); this design was more commonly referred to as the Austerity’ Class and class members as Austerities’.

    0-6-0ST 2183 was supplied to the War Department in 1943 as WD71529; it was sold to the Wemyss Private Railway (Fife) in 1964 where it became fleet number 15 and, when the railway closed, 2183 was bought by T Muir of Kirkcaldy for scrap in 1970. It remained in long term storage until bought privately in 2003 to enter preservation and subsequently moving to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway in 2007. A later move was made to the East Lancashire Railway where it was overhauled before being transferred to the Avon Valley Railway in March 2013 where it remains as at 2015. A visit to the ELR on 24 January 2009 saw the locomotive:

    0-4-0ST 2315 ‘Lady Ingrid’ was supplied to the South of Scotland Electricity Board’s Braehead Power Station in 1951 and was noted under repair at the Tunbridge Wells West workshops of the Spa Valley Railway on 17 June 2011.

    0-6-0T 2017 was supplied to the Wemyss Bay Private Railway in 1935 and entered preservation at the Strathspey Railway where, on 18 August 2007, it was noted passing Drumuillie with a Broomhill–Aviemore service.
