About this ebook

Nice is the capital city of the Riviera coastal region in southeast France. It is the second most visited town in France after Paris. The pleasant Mediterranean climate makes the region, also known as Cote d'Azur, a terrific destination to visit around the year. The lifestyle of Provence, the local food and wine, the Alps, the sea and the rich history mixed with ancient overseas influences create a unique atmosphere for the region.

The Gems of Nice and the French Riviera is a travel guidebook that shows you the places and sights worth visiting in this corner of the Provence-Alpes province. The book covers the Riviera from the famous Saint-Tropez to Menton, showing you the best places in charming towns like Antibes, Cannes, Grasse and Monaco.

In addition, the book unveils Riviera gems many tourists haven't discovered yet. Beautiful photographs let you view how it is really like in a destination. It is easy to quickly browse the pages when searching for information, and then find out details about a destination.

Many head to the French Riviera for the beaches, some travelers are interested in its history, others want to taste the food and wine, while the rest of the visitors look for adventures on the mountains. Riviera is not only about the sun and the sea, but it is also about spectacular landscapes and exciting activities. Nice is much more than the Promenade des Anglais – the old town, market places, galleries, restaurants and shopping streets are buzzing with locals and visitors. This travel guide points you to the right direction.

The second edition of The Gems of Nice and the French Riviera includes new destinations, updated details and links for sights, new images and maps, and an overall update of the content.

    Introduction

    Nice and Riviera, France

The French Riviera and the city of Nice are year-round travel destinations that have a lot to offer to many types of visitors. People who are interested in art, nature, architecture, outdoor activities or history can enjoy the coastal towns, the medieval villages in the mountains and the beautiful scenery of the region any time of the year. Sun lovers love to flock to the beaches of Juan-les-Pins, Nice, Cannes and other Riviera towns during the summer months.

This book showcases the best sights and activities on the French Riviera. Whether you stay in the region for a weekend, or the whole winter, there is practically an endless choice of exciting places to visit and exciting things to do.

Many people imagine wide sandy beaches, glamorous festivals, or casinos when they think about the French Riviera, but those features are only a tiny portion of what the region has to offer to an active traveler. European royalty and aristocracy began to spend winters in the region by the early 19th century. The construction of the famous beach boulevard Promenade des Anglais started in Nice in 1822. Nonetheless, the region is still genuinely French and reflects the culture of Provence. Artists and authors discovered the Riviera in the 19th century, followed by the rest of us in the 20th century. Consequently,  tourist services have been developing for almost 200 years.

The French Riviera is comprised of the Mediterranean coastline towns from Menton in the east to Saint-Tropez in the west. The definition of the Riviera is flexible, but it is the region I cover in this book. Nice is the largest city in the region. Across the Italian border, the Riviera stretches to towns like San Remo.

The Alps provide a spectacular backdrop for the Riviera. Most of the year, snow-capped mountain tops are visible from beaches. High Alps ski resorts, such as Isola 2000 and Les Donnas, are located only a one-and-a-half or two-hour drive away from Nice.

For many, the French Riviera has everything: the sea, the beaches, the mountains, the scenery, the climate, and delicious food and drink. It is not a coincidence that some people also stay in the French Riviera in the wintertime. They already know that a place called Riviera doesn't exist in local French life at all (although I will use the term in this book). The local term is Côte d'Azur.
