    Broken Trust - Alexis Ashlie

    Chapter One

The bonfire blazed before us, the sound of the thundering music increasing my heartbeat, or was it Elijah that was standing too close to me, his naked chest almost pressed to my back. I couldn't decide what had my heart rate spiking, but my body suddenly developed a mind of its own, stepping back, so I was flush against him.

His scent enveloped me, a heady mixture of the wood he had been cutting and a faint smell of the cologne he had applied hours before.

We looked on as our friends and classmates danced on the beach while drinking and howling to the moon cheerfully. We were all celebrating the start of our summer break, but the following day a lot of the people before me would be leaving for god knows where to enjoy their summer.

Not me, though, I'll be staying here, at home, the entire summer, and working to save up for my tuition. If no one has told you, I’ll be the bearer of bad news that college isn’t cheap.

Another thing people in college tend to do is make mistakes, a lot of them. Whether it be the friends they make, the parties they go to, the major they pick, or the mistake I had made, cheating.

Elijah and I were cloaked in the shadows with his towering form behind me, I can’t do this. I said breathlessly, and his arms snaked around me, pinning me to him.

He doesn’t deserve you, Amanda. He never did.

My eyes fluttered closed as his husky voice nipped at my ear, and I could feel the butterflies in my gut doing backflips as a result, You’re his brother. This is wrong, Elijah.

I didn’t hear you saying that last night. What I heard was you screaming my name.

I spun around and covered his mouth with my hand. I looked from side to side, checking if anyone had heard him before growling, Keep your voice down. Stop messing with me; I'm not doing this with you.

He cheated on you, and you stayed with him. Why?

I stepped back, distancing myself as I crossed my arms over my chest, his grey eyes like melted silver burning into me for an answer. I could never think straight around Elijah, and less so when he touches me, ever since the day I bumped into him. I didn't end up dating him; however, I ended up with his brother.

I love him. His jaws clenched, and I sank my nails into my upper arms, the pain within his eyes hurting me more than my nails. I didn’t sound convincing to my ear, but I held my ground, I love him, and he loves me. He cheated on me once, and we've moved past it, so why are you suddenly acting as if you care?

He crossed his bulky arms over his chest, and his exposed pecs grew before my eyes, puffing up, You've forgiven him?

    Yes.

    You’re lying.

I gritted my teeth and exhaled slowly through my nostrils as the salty wind from
