      Checked out this author out of curiosity when I read some very dismissive words about him in another book. Yes, the plot in entirely implausible, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. For being a very swashbuckling romance it's oddly compelling, and, differences in literary merit notwithstanding, it's really not so different from a Tarzan story or the wildly improbably Count of Monte Cristo. The characters are full of inconsistencies and contrariness but in a way that made them seem human and interesting - a quality many of our modern potboilers lack.

      The point being - this isn't great literature. However, for reading when you just want to get lost in an adventure you could do much, much worse.
