WHEN I BEGAN TO PONDER THE subject of this column, with a few days to go before year's end, the ever-helpful website Procyclingstats told me there were four short of 100 registered professional road cyclists who will have retired by December 31, 2018. 52 riders were from WorldTour or Pro Continental teams, 18 from the former. Out of the 52, the youngest was just 20 years of age, a promising junior from France who won the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Espoirs in 2017 (the year Greg Van Avermaet took the elite men's title, en route to victory at Paris-Roubaix); and after a stagiaire opportunity with Cofidis, he landed a ride with Pro Contilevel Vital Concept Cycling Club
