The young painters gathered in this issue—all recent MFA graduates or candidates—make work as eclectic as their backgrounds and interests. Their home cities are as far away as Klang, Malaysia; São Paulo, Brazil; Seoul, South Korea; and Tel Aviv, Israel, as well as a plethora of American centers, from Miami to San Francisco, Atlanta to Reno, and Dallas to Baltimore. They have attended highly regarded institutions all over the country, including the Rhode Island School of Design; Savannah College of Art and Design; School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Columbia, Tufts, and Tulane Universities; and the University of California, Los Angeles.
The continuously escalating cost of education shows the value and impact of MFA programs. The remarkable amount of talent evident in these pages shows a willingness to experiment but also a grounding in the history of painting and an aptitude for an array of visual languages.
