    Foreword

Once in a while you read a poem that impacts your life. For example, The Burning Truck by Les Murray really inspired and redirected my path. It is my hope that you will find something to own in this collection of poems. These are a mix of old and new verse. Here you will find word pictures and parables and deep insights. I also put some playful poems throughout. At the end of this book I put an essay explaining our cultural confusion and how your kids are often indoctrinated at school with bizarre ethics. God bless you and yours.

    Pandemic

For a thousand years it will prey upon

    this planet

    because some lab tech

    went for noodles

    one cloudy day

    in Wuhan

    How wonderful life

    would be if Goodness

    spread so easily?

    The Bee

    All of Nature warned you:

    Fly!

    as storm clouds gathered

    alluring reds and yellows dull

    yet, you lingered

    Why?

    now, drenched and cold

    crawling softly, barely alive

the rain, the chill of night

caught you far from the hive

    where you huddled alone

    waiting,

    trying to make it through

the worst time of your life

    until the warm sunrise

    promised redemption:

    dry wind for wet wings

    California Chill

    Your hard, 23-year-old body

fled a warm, Jersey home with an

overdose boyfriend you left for dead

    somewhere east of Vegas

and now, beat down with rain,

close to tears, you beg for coffee

    outside the local, mini-mart.

Where some see a resort leech,

    some a homeless child,

    or a pampered, beach-party camper

off the grid with a half-stoned smile

    and loads of support.

While others see a sexual toy

    or a system victim torn

    by predators and society:

    a housing crisis,

    a line of poverty,

    low wages, heartlessness

and the need to completely take control

    of the Western economy!

    But you knew all along

    (eternally built of God)

    briefly confused

    by an odd, California chill.

    Panic Attack

    It seems like

    an overwhelming bully

    threatens imminent death

    (for the strangest reason)

    fear explodes

    shrapnel thoughts squeeze

    your chest strangled breath,

a trapped heart, a soul cramp

    pulsing through your neck

a terror sneeze, a struggling curse

    as quicksand thoughts

    makes everything worse

    and everything screams RUN!

Until the bully’s hodge-podge of death

    finally leaves you devastated

    with sore muscles, frayed nerves

    and an open threat:

    Don’t come this way again

shrinking your world with phobic hotspots

Then, one day by God’s grace,

you learn to laugh and say:

    Bring it on!

    having learned the trick

    of the Chinese finger trap

    SERVICE PET

    Emptiness runs about the place

    in a sweater wrapped anxiety

    I scratch fear

    behind the ears

    and panic licks

    my smiling face

    Doors of Addiction

    When DeLorean was arrested

I spent the weekend at the home

of a drug dealer: snorting coke, watching the news

and waiting for the door to be kicked in.

On Sunday, something kept knocking against my hollow soul

the way rocks clang off an empty, metal barrel.

    Echoing, I drank more beer.

Later, kneeling before a shifting toilet,

I asked Almighty God to let me live just that day.

My face burned and the veins of my neck ached from the strain

Covered with sweat, I was afraid

but could soon forget that God had listened.

Sometimes then, I would see myself from across the room

    and wonder if anyone else

thought I looked like a talking dead body

waiting for God to kick the door in.

    After the Storm

Lord, what a strange party you give

with great, howling gusts of wind

    the
