About this ebook

This book gives readers a clear strategy and plan to survive the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

This book tells readers how to prepare to protect themselves and their families from the four major threats posed by this disease:

1. The health threat posed by the disease itself. As a disease, COVID-19 is a much more serious threat than many millions of Americans seem to realize. It is at least forty times more lethal than the flu, and is easily twice as contagious. It poses a lethal threat to people in their twenties, thirties, and forties, as well as to the middle-aged and elderly. It kills people who do not have underlying medical conditions. This book gives evidence for all of this, and tells readers how to avoid contracting COVID-19 as much as possible.

2. The increased threat posed by the Great Hospital Overwhelm—which will happen sooner than many people realize. Based on extensive statistical analysis of American case data through March 25th, 2020, this book gives readers reliable projections for the point at which hospitals nationwide will reach the Overwhelm Point. From the Overwhelm Point onwards for about a month, hospitals will not be able to be able to receive the vast majority of people who require life-saving treatment—for any reason, no matter how serious their illnesses or diseases. This book provides a strategy for readers to avoid the catastrophe of the Great Hospital Overwhelm—a disaster that could result in over 20 million American deaths.

3. The potential threat of starvation posed by a disruption in food distribution systems. Food delivery systems are vulnerable at multiple points. They may fail just when readers need them the most. This book explains the vulnerabilities of our food delivery systems. Most important, this book gives clear guidance on what food and supplies to store.

4. The threat of economic collapse and interruption of your income. Economic collapse is a real possibility in the United States, and it may last for months. Many people will not be able to return to the jobs that they had before the pandemic. This book gives clear guidance for how to prepare for the very different world of work that awaits survivors.

You should take measures now to protect yourself and your family from these threats presented by COVID-19—and you have a very short timeframe in which to do this. This book shows you how.

In Chapter 1, readers will learn about each of the threats mentioned above that COVID-19 poses to them and their families.

In Chapters 2 through 7, the book focuses on what readers can do to survive all this. The book lays out an overall survival strategy; what to store in the way of food and supplies; how to deal with financial issues of different kinds; how to reduce exposure to COVID-19 now; how to handle self-imposed isolation; and how to approach life after the pandemic has passed in a very different post-pandemic world.

In the Afterword, the author address two pieces of extraordinarily bad advice that have been given to the public as this book is going to press: the idea that people should go back to work in late March or April to restart the economy (despite the deaths that would certainly occur), and the notion that religious people should ‘show their faith’ by worshipping in groups despite the threat of the virus.

Appendix A provides a list of items that you should consider storing. In Appendix B, the author describes different approaches to calculating the case fatality rate of COVID-19; the news here is not comforting, but the author means it to be motivating rather than fear-inducing.

The entire tone of the book is to help readers avoid panic or fear through being prepared to meet the challenges created by the pandemic. At the same time, the book does not sugar-coat or soft-pedal anything about the pandemic and the threat it poses. Throughout the book, claims are based on evidence, science, and reliable statist

    Preface

In this preface, I describe what qualifies me to write about the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. I also thank some of the people to whom I am indebted for gifts of knowledge, skill, and support. If these are not important issues to you, the reader, feel free to skip to the introduction; however, I suggest that you read the rest of the book in order from the introduction onwards.

At times like this, when an invisible enemy has the United States in its grip, I recall the centuries-old principle that knowledge is power, as well as the truly ancient principle that the truth will set you free. Never have these maxims been more valid than in this moment, as COVID-19 looms large in our reality.

In this book, I share the principles that readers need to know in order to protect themselves from the COVID-19 pandemic and to be better positioned for life after the pandemic. This knowledge truly is power. This knowledge potentially may truly set one free from the worst of the grim circumstances that will probably engulf Western society after the pandemic.

My qualifications to write this book fall into three categories: pandemic epidemiology, statistical analysis, and foresight consulting (applied futurism).

As the director of research at a private research firm, I was responsible for responding to calls for proposals for funded research. In the mid-2000s, calls for proposals appeared regarding potential responses to a future influenza pandemic, no doubt in response to the SARS epidemic of 2003. To prepare my proposals, I engaged in extensive
