The bus is taking a sharp turn, climbing the uphill. The cold air through the window refreshed me, taking away all the tiredness of a hectic morning in the kitchen. Today, I am joining the new posting, the school is in another district and up on a hill. I am going to join my third posting place as a school counselor. There are a limited number of buses to that place. I had taken the early morning bus, so that I can reach the school by 9 am. The bus is not full. I looked outside. The dew drops on the leaves are shining in the morning sun rays. The thoughts of some incidents in the past rushed to my mind. I remembered the faces of many children, Shivam, Smitha, Arun, Kshma and so on who came to staff room specially to wish me on my last day in the previous school.
Shivam
Don’t know what happened to that boy, he has not attended the school not even for a day after the Christmas vacation.
Thomas sir was talking about Shivam, a class X student. He is a bright student.
He continued. Now revisions are going on and there is hardly three weeks for the Pre –board. No intimation has been received from his side regarding absence from school, not even a phone call. I am afraid, something unfortunate has happened to him or his family.
He paused. He comes from a nearby village, probably nobody in the class stays near to his place.
Thomas sir was quite worried. Let us visit his home and find out. May be he is in some trouble.
I suggested.
When we reached his home, Shivam was studying sitting in the courtyard. He looked weak. He was surprised to see us. Are you sick?
I asked. No, madam,
he said without looking at me. Then why are you not coming to school..?
Thomas sir asked. He didn’t reply. Where are your family members?
He asked. My younger sister is studying from my grandmother’s place. I stay with my mother here.
He replied. Your father…?
I asked. "He goes for job as a construction worker and comes home
