Home Without Crisis (Book Two) - Oketola Isaac Adedayo
Chapter One
TOPIC: FOOD PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION
TEXT: Gen. 1: 29; Prov. 23: 1 – 8
Question:
My wife always complains that I don’t eat at home and I usually come home late. I am tired of complaining about junk foods every time because she couldn’t cook a delicious meal I admire. I have tried to endure all these while. But someone advised me to hire a professional cook or send her to catering school. I am confused!
Introduction
The Bible makes us to understand that the first man and woman were created in the Garden of Eden where they lived on fruits and vegetable. Those two substances were so nutritious that it could guarantee good health and adequate vitality. That is why the nutritionists say you are what you eat
. Food is part of what determines good health, strength and capability in man.
The meaning of Food
Aguilera, (1999) defines food as any substance consumed to provide nutritional support to the body. Food could be of plant or animal origin and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, water and minerals. The substance is digested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life or stimulate growth.
However, food is a substance which the living creatures rely on for survival; through which they derive energy, strength and life. It could be in solid or liquid form. Dietary habits are the habitual decisions a person makes when choosing what foods to eat. Many cultures hold some food preferences and some food taboos. Cultures and religion play a significant role in dietary choices. Some foods are not permitted while others are. For example; Kosher foods by Judaism, halal foods by Islam, sacrificial foods to Christianity and in Hinduism beef is restricted.
Classifications of Food
Food is classified into two categories. It is either solid or fruity in nature. There are six classes of balance diet, namely;
1.Protein – Egg, Meat, Beans, Fish etc
2.Vitamins – Vegetables, Milk, Meat, Tomato, fruits etc.
3.Carbohydrate – Yam, grains, Rice, Flour, etc
4.Oil and fat – Vegetable oil, Palm oil, Groundnut oil, Butter etc.
5.Minerals – Mango, Guava, Pawpaw, Fruits, etc
6.Water- Every liquid content
Food Preparation Guideline
Food preparation may involve mixing, heating or cooling, pressure cooking, fermentation or combination with other food. In a home, most food preparation takes place in the kitchen. While some preparations are done to;
1.Enhance the taste or aesthetic appeal
2.Other preparation may help to preserve the food
3.Others may be involved in cultural identity.
A meal is made up of food which is prepared to be eaten at a specific time and place. Preparation involves all the physical processes taken before the food is fully ready for consumption. The procedures begin with shopping, arranging, cooking which requires;
a.Preparation under a hygienic condition
b.Presentation with respect – Gen. 18: 8, 1 Kings 17: 13 - 15
c.Order of setting the table- this involves how the food, soup, water should be arranged.
Benefits of Food to the Body
There is no doubt, maintaining a nutritious diet can help keep your body healthy. But when it comes to which foods can specifically benefit which body parts, science remains surprisingly sketchy. For all the exaggerated claims about the health benefits of antioxidants and probiotics, a scan of the scientific literature reveals how much we don’t know. But there is greater advantage in good and hygienic food substances to the body. This assertion is leading to examining some vital parts of the body and the required food items to improve functionality.
1.The Human Eye:
Lutein, one of the brightly colored compounds calls carotenoids that give fruits and vegetables their color, may help ward off age-related macular degeneration, probably by acting as a cell-damage-fighting antioxidant. The food items are required; Egg yolk, yellow corn etc.
2.The Human Brain
The omega-3 fatty acid found in cold water, fatty fish thought to play a role in protecting against dementia which is a progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or diseases in the brain. These food items are required: Salmon, tuna, sardine etc.
3.The Human Bone
The calcium in dairy products (added to some soy beverages) is a building block of bone tissue in early life. Later, it helps fight osteoporosis which is a disease occurring especially in women following menopause in which the bones are extremely subjected to fracture. The Dietary guidelines recommend three cups of low-fat or non-fat milk daily and fortified soy beverages.
4.The Human Heart
Research has found that potassium found in many fruits and vegetables lower the risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, especially when consumption of sodium is reduced. Therefore, these food items are required: Baked potato, prune juice etc.
5.The Human Lungs
Research findings has suggested that vegetable are more useful in reduction and risk of cancer with the help of glucosinolate cruciferous found in vegetables which might be useful in keeping carcinogens from damaging DNA, thwarting cancers development. These food items are required: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts etc.
6.The Human Stomach
There is evidence that eating ginger can battle motion sickness and perhaps nausea associated with pregnancy. As little as a gram of powdered ginger might tame nausea or vomiting, though medications appear to work better at fight those ills.
7.The Human Colon
Beans and peas are excellent sources of fiber, whose health benefits include keeping the body regular. The dietary guidelines say women should consume 25 grams of fiber daily, men need 38 grams. Therefore, food like Beans and peas are required daily.
8.The Prostate
In the recent times, research findings have revealed the menace of prostate cancer and suggest quick action towards prevention and treatment. Taking of green tea’s antioxidant polyphenols may help prevent cancer of the prostate and other organs. Green tea is generally considered safe to consume in abundance.
9.The Ovaries
Food research study taken by Harvard University in (2007) found that women who consumed high-fat dairy products such as ice cream reduced their risk of infertility. It is not clear why; the authors surmised that the fat might somehow improve ovarian functions when women are trying to conceive.
Food Presentation
Arrangement and placement of food should have a natural focal point
the spot that first draws attention when someone looks at the dish. Aesthetically, pleasing and eye appealing food presentations can encourage people to consume foods. A common saying is that people "eat
