Into the Ordinary - Carys Owen
Advice from a Carpenter
Cut the sentiment
tell a story
the way it happened
the way it felt
no embellishment
don’t go using
every big word you ever heard
people know you know them
no need to show off
no matter your words are ordinary
most of all be yourself
speak your words
the way they come to your mouth
like a conversation with a friend
like the only version of you
Without Words
Today it rained
we laughed
got wet
it was so simple
everything green
and dripping
we watched my dog
make friends
without words
there was a lot of
laughter and licking
and sparkling eyes
it was easy
and unplanned
like all the best adventures
Connection
Minute by minute
I glance at the screen
craving connection
a slave to the messenger
forgetting days when letters were written
eventually
and mailed with a stamp
eventually
and arrived through the letter box
eventually
were picked up and read
eventually
then re-read and savoured
all that time knowing
our friendship was strong
and wild and beautiful
and a postcard
from a far-flung place
might cinch us together
at any time
or a birthday card
three days late
or a joyful
