The Advanced Business English Guide - Christopher Hill
INTRODUCTION
THE IMPORTANCE AND THE POPULARITY OF THE ENGLISH
The incessant rise enjoyed by the English language is founded on the growth of the British Empire in the world of politics. The English language began its widespread from the British Isles. From there, it spread its tentacles across the globe through trade. This means of spreading was a result of the intention of the British Empire, to engage in trading (this involves buying and selling) with other nations of the world. As a result of the focus of England on trading, the English language gradually became dominant in areas such as Asia and Africa where trade had been thriving for ages. The fact that only a few Britons settled in these locations of the world made it impossible for English to become the mother tongue of the people living in those areas. But, most of these nations still retained the English language as their official or semi-formal language as a result of their colonization and inclusion in the British Empire. Countries, such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia were once part of the British Empire, while countries like Nigeria, Ghana Sierra Leone, and South Africa were once colonies of the British Empire.
The Popularity of the English language didn’t stop at the influence of the British Empire. It was extended by the rise of the United States. The 19th century birthed the rise of the United States. At the time when Europe was recovering from the effects of the first and second world wars, the United States was booming and becoming powerful. There was a rise in trade activities in the USA, and the English language kept on growing as the language of trade. The popularity of the English language today is built on the influence of American businesses and the already existing tradition, which considers it as the language of trade. The rise of the United States didn’t come without its challenge to traditional English. It did come, as there was a development of another form of English, which is American English.
American English became so popular that the traditional English couldn’t stand against it. A good example of the American English influence is seen in Hong Kong – a former colony of the British Empire. There are more people who are interested in learning American English rather than the British variety. Since trade has been booming in the United States, it is just so expected that countries of the world would prefer its variety of English to that of other varieties.
THE INFLUENCE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Prior to now, Latin was the sole language of science. Many scholars and researchers published their works in Latin, and in their mother tongues. However, the English language has taken over the science and technology space. Most publications are made in the English language. We have terms such as oxygen, permafrost, and hydrogen, which are used in science. These terms actually originated from Greek, Russian, and French. The English language underwent an interesting rise in the technology space. Latin was first replaced by German as the language of science. But the end of the first world war took the German away as the language of science. Scientists from Belgium, France, and Britain blocked scientists from Germany and Austria from attending conferences and publishing their studies in the Western European Journals. This event gave rise to the English language as the language of science in the Western part of Europe. The English rose to dominate the world of technology as the language that most operating systems, programs, and websites are written in.
The English language enjoys widespread popularity for its gender-free nature. This feature of the English language differentiates it from other languages in Europe. English doesn’t have feminine or masculine grammar. Languages such as French, German, and Spanish all possess grammars that are related to gender.
Having looked at the background to the development of the English language, one can still be left with the question: is English the most popular language in the world? Although English is accepted to be The Dominant Language, it ranks as the third-largest language based on its number of native speakers in the world. It is right behind Mandarin and Spanish. But as a second language, English takes the leading role and it’s being followed by French. If the population of the native speakers of the English language is combined with the population of those who speak it as a second language, it will be the second most popular language immediately behind Mandarin. Hence, even though the English language is not the Official most popular language, it is among the top three.
THE STATUS OF ENGLISH IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD
As mentioned earlier, the English language ranks as the third-largest language in the world by native speakers after Mandarin and Spanish. Presently, it is spoken in 112 countries, and it has 328 million speakers. English is acceptable across the world. English has a wider dispersion more than any other language. It is the lingua franca in many countries that have had contact with Britain in the past. Countries such as Jamaica, Bahamas, and Ghana enjoy the English language as their official language, while countries like Pakistan, Tanzania, and Singapore make use of it as their official language alongside other official languages.
Many linguists have taken a critical look into the status of the English language. The status studies are based on the role it performs across borders. Two scholars, Anderman and Rogers claimed that the English language has evolved into a lingua franca, which has made it possible for people to communicate easily and deal with every border barrier. In the words of David Crystal, the English language is a global language. As a global language, it achieves this status as a result of the different designations it enjoys among countries of the world. What this means is that the English language goes beyond being an ordinary mother tongue. It now serves as the official language in some nations, first language, second language, or foreign language. Most countries of the world are exposed to the English language. The American brand is global. The brand’s influence is felt in various industries – technology, entertainment, sports, politics, etc.
THE 3-CIRCLE MODEL
According to the classification of the English status by Braj Kachru, there are three circles under consideration. The biggest of the circles consists of the inner, outer, and extended circles.
The Inner Circle: This includes the group of people that makes use of the English language as their mother tongue. These speakers acquire English from birth. They are also called native speakers. This circle is made of countries such as Britain, USA, Canada, etc. The inner-circle has around 380 million speakers.
The Outer Circle: This includes the countries where the English language serves as the official language. It is their second language after their mother tongue. These countries use the language because it offers them the access to reach certain heights in their lives. It is also the language in many of the important sectors of their countries, such as media, education, government, law, etc. Examples of countries in this circle are Ghana, Nigeria, India, Singapore, etc.
The Expanding Circle: English in the expanding circle serves as a foreign language. The countries don’t use it in the education system, or governance. It is learned as a language of international trade, diplomacy, etc. Countries such as Spain, China, Russia, and Germany are in the expanding circle.
