    Quarantine - David Hawk

    Excerpt from Quarantine

He took two tentative steps forward, stopping in front of the open door to his office. Logan heard a noise. It was faint, and he barely heard it. He had no idea what the fuck it was. It almost sounded like—giggling. But the sound didn’t come from the living room at the front of the house. It came from inside the office. Oscar let out another guttural growl.

Logan heard the noise again. Fresh goosebumps poured down his arms. It was definitely someone giggling, and they were close. He whipped the beam of the flashlight toward his office and the door slammed shut right in front of him.

    Chapter One

Logan couldn’t fucking believe it. The test was positive. Covid-Fucking-19 . He was now a statistic. The next time he watched the news, and they talked about the number of positive cases of the virus in Colorado, he would have contributed to that number. The lady on the other end of the line told him to consult his doctor for what he needed to do next, and then asked if he needed documentation to send to his employer.

Logan couldn’t help but laugh at the woman on the other end of the line. Once businesses started closing up shop, his job went with them. It was the first time in a while that he missed being with the C.B.I. The promise of a hefty paycheck had lured him away from the bureau. At the same time, his wife had just sprung divorce papers on him. Just a few short weeks later, he needed to find a new place to live, and a new life.

Now, here he was, sick and alone in a house that he couldn’t afford. He hoped that maybe the virus would fill up his lungs with infection and let him slip away. It was a sick thought, but surviving this thing was the first of a long line of hardships that awaited him.

Logan slowly walked back to his bed and slid under his threadbare covers. He was freezing, even though he had just registered a one-hundred and one temperature. Up to now, he had only felt a little more tired than usual. But, it was as if Logan’s body had responded to the official diagnosis. His lungs felt full and tight, and his body ached. He felt like shit. The worse thing about the situation, was that he got it from Leah.

It was a bad idea to sleep with her, especially since she worked at Denver Health. She came over to the new place after her shift and wanted to get drunk with him. After a couple of
