Bathysphere - George Pestana
Aiming Inward
beagle borne
is the regal flea.
peering down in scorn
at the lowly
dust-mite
and his dust-smitten
progeny,
he carries on
or is carried,
i should say,
in his most peculiar way.
bitten by
of kings
and bitten by regret
he aims for
higher things;
perhaps that parrot
balanced on the
admiral
whose bugle blares -
his frugal airs
belying
his nobility;
although, admittedly
he's most unfit
for taking part
in hunting fox.
yet,
all in sport.
in glass retort
the doctors of the mind
consort.
a harried sort,
these harriers
and eager scottish terriers.
they aim
for game
of lower grade.
why do they seek
such meager prize?
perhaps to patronize
their so-called
masters -
hunters
of a hunted class.
in glass retort
the doctors of the mind
consort.
what are they
to find
when all is said and done?
the final blast
reveals
the fox concealed
the rabbits run
while i,
in leaping from my host
will land a higher post,
my carrier
just as blind.
in glass retort
the doctors of the mind
consort.

Beholden
cats walk
in disproportionate
silhouette
casting shadows
too much like
themselves.
they hold forth
yet cannot
strike a pose.
cats sleep
in sunlight deep.
they cannot
help themselves.
it holds them
like a memory
which moulds them
still.
cats caress
with their eyes
and cradle
your heart
thereby.
consoling
with their souls
they hold you
as kindred.
cats are cataracts
of kindness
overflowing
in their fold.
behold.

Bounds
journeys spent
on inward days
our soporific
senses
somewhat register
in-tenses present
(not-so-present tension)
in definite
pretension.
oh! think we
so highly strung
to be the network
of the sky?
haughtiness.
attorneys try
in not-untoward ways
the unsolicited
to forward on
to wardens
mending-minded.
they would
bind us to the earth
lest we burn with
stolen fire
and so guard us
sending waxen wings
now not-so-waxen
to the penitentiary
cleaners (of the penitent).
oh! are we not sorry
mixing mythic
metaphoric creatures
blending gold
with iron pyrite
into lead
with which we fill
our heads
and slake our thirst?
