I hate my job. I really fucking hate my job. I sit at a computer all day long and compare documents against a master list. Then, I make sure that my company is stealing from regular people the maximum amount allowable by law. My job exists to make the rich richer, while I myself languish between the edge of poverty and the middle class. The job pays well enough, but my harpy ex-wife gets a huge cut of all my earnings, even though she's living with a more successful guy. If she'd just marry him, I could stop my payments to her, but she refuses to; mostly to taunt me. That's life for me though, one upset after another.

The other day, however, my life turned around.

I looked around my office for the thirteenth time that day. I did this often when I worked overtime, because there were few people around and I could get away with doing a lot less. I was sure that that day was no different than the day before, and that tomorrow would be no different.

The people I work with were mostly women, but none of them were worth checking out. Most of them were either younger than I was or were in higher positions than me. This didn't bother me, though. I had long given up any ambition.

My own cubicle wall was nearly empty. The only things I had up were a picture of me with my mom before she died and a framed certificate showing my five year anniversary of working for this company. I had smiled while I accepted the certificate, but inside a
