About this ebook

Time travel has been talked about and portrayed in many different ways. In this novella we take a look at what might happen if dogs were the ones with the ability to travel through time and space. The first publication in the Wren Isle series, these stories give the reader a taste of the strange experiences had by occupants and visitors who cross the water. With distinctly different narrative voices throughout, 'Day of The Dog' is a refreshingly fun read that will entertain readers (and maybe spark conversations about the possible good and bad aspects of dogs having access to extreme power).

    Henrick Anderson – Prologue

In what we would call the year 3049, and the Universe would call ‘another Tuesday,’ a scientist called Henrick Anderson was having an existential crisis. Perhaps it was residual unprocessed emotions from the fact that Fiona had left him for Bjorn. Perhaps it was the isolation he’d slipped into as a by-product of his obsession with work. Perhaps it was the letter he’d received, informing him that They would no longer be funding his research into ‘Overall Elevation of Society by Selected Intervention in the Past.’ Perhaps it was the fear that once they cleared him out of this office, they might discover all the items he still possessed that should have been handed in during the great time travel armistice. Perhaps it was the beans he’d had at lunch.

Whatever the reason, Henrick felt bad. His stomach churned. His head was fuzzy. His heart felt untethered and at risk of floating away. Without his research, without Fiona, what reason had he for being? All his life he’d tried to further the discoveries of time travel and enable alterations of the past that would benefit them all. And he’d done it. Yet because of one disastrous event during the trial phase, it was all to go to waste. Yes, they’d lost half the human population and then had to send a team of over a hundred specialists back to redo history was well as they possibly could and yes, the effects of that meant that all their efforts into saving the planet’s ecosystem had been shot to shit, but still. Every brave new frontier demanded sacrifices. Surely the survival of the human race was worth the sacrifice of a planet or two. Henrick cursed their emotional handicaps.

The more he pondered, the closer he felt he was to another of his revelations. He gazed out of his office window and surveyed the universe. Even though he was only one of many with these off-world views, Henrick’s particular office was housed in one of the farthest flung craft. He still felt a thrill every time he surveyed the entirety of human existence in one glance. Earth was still struggling along. Mars was doing quite well, he had to admit, despite the sanctimonious rubbish about eco-friendly this and that. The colony was growing.

Then it came. The spark. The understanding. Of course he was alone. Of course he was under pressure. It was the only way a mind like his could push free of the confines of his society. It would be up to him. Henrick the brave. Heroes had to walk alone. He could do it, he was sure. If he could go back, before the controls of certain companies and minds began their take-over of society, if he could create the ark before the others understood they needed it, then he could save them all. Or at least the ones worth saving. He just knew it, in his bones.

Henrick crossed the room. Deep in the back of refrigerator, behind two aging cans of mountain pure vitamin enriched Mars water, sat a small brown bag. He reached for it. As he pulled it forward, half the bag tore away, sticking frozen and wet, to the back of the refrigerator. Henrick peeled away the rest of the soggy mess and looked at the treasure he held in his hand. It was thick and squashy. Like silicone or putty. As his skin warmed it, it began to uncurl and melt across his palm. Henrick flashed back to the first day of his PhD programme and remembered the words of Professor Finch.

‘Time has its own plan. Make sure you have one also. Once it reaches its natural temperature, it will fight to return to its natural place. You are fighting the universe itself when you use these slivers. Always have a plan. Contain it or it will be gone. Back to where it came from.

Each one of these slivers took ten months to obtain. Each one was extracted with complete precision in order to maintain the natural order. Do not mix them. Do not contaminate them. Do not lose them. There will be no replacements.’

Henrick began his collection then. A couple of samples he collected from other PhD students. There were many of them.
