    CHAPTER 1

    Road Trip!

We’ve been on this bus for hours. The closer we get to Disneyworld, the more layers I peel off. No more gloves, hats, winter coats, or scarves. I’ll take Florida heat over snowy New Jersey winters any day.

Gabby Sanchez, one of my best friends and a fellow dance-team member, yawns and stretches beside me. Are we there yet? she asks sleepily.

I shake my head. No. But the Disney billboards must mean we’re close.

Can you believe it’s really happening, Brie? Gabby says, sounding more awake. We’ll get to perform in Disneyworld’s Main Street parade!

    I laugh. "If we win."

Gabby rolls her eyes. With your hip-hop skills, she says, voice rising, my jazz team’s killer routine, plus all of our ballet and tap combinations, there’s no way we don’t win. We’re a quadruple threat!

Behind me Jada Grant and Grace Jenkins, our two other best friends, whoop and playfully kick the back of the seats.

You got that right! sings Grace. She does a mini tap dance with her feet. Jada, meanwhile, strikes one of her many ballet poses.

I can’t blame my friends for feeling confident. Ms. Marianne’s Academy of Dance, where we all dance together, is a great school. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have made the cut for the Citrus Jam, a dance competition that takes place a few miles outside Orlando, Florida.

Dance instructors for teams in the twelve-and-over category had to submit audition tapes of their teams to qualify. Teams from all over the world applied, but only twenty were chosen to compete.
