What’s occurring?
GERAINT THOMAS: It’s nice to be back at camp. There are nine of us up here, a good little group. Everyone’s keen to get away from kids and partners. You get a massage; you don’t have to cook. I’ve got a nine-monthold now so sleep is a bit better and you can just ride your bike and only worry about that. Everyone’s keen because racing hopefully is just around the corner.
LUKE ROWE: There’s only Egan missing and that’s the Tour longlist. It’s a pretty intense group, and it’s solid training. It’s ‘go’ time now isn’t it? It’s been a long time at home training, day-in, day-out. It got quite monotonous.
Is it motivating to be in a team again? Training on your own is a big part of your job but it’s a means to an end…
LR: We were literally training on our own a lot of the time, not just being away from racing but having to ride on your own and not in a group. I loved the lockdown in a lot of ways – being at home, wife, kid and a simple life but I certainly miss racing. I enjoy racing a lot more than I do training. Training is a means to an end, to get to the goal of being good at races. Camp isn’t as competitive as racing, but it’s a competitive environment.
