How Sherlock Holmes Lived - Charles A. Mills
INTRODUCTION
The night is evil. A thick grey fog envelopes the street. Your footsteps resonate on the pavement. You shove your hands deep into your pockets and hunch your shoulders against the chill dampness.
Up ahead, a yellow light peeps out from behind heavy green drapes. It is 221-B Baker Street, the home of your friends Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. This is the surest citadel against evil. The warmth of the hearth, the keenness of the friendship, the bounty of the hospitality...

With them we battle the forces of evil and always win. Here we take our rest in peace and plenty. Outlasting war and revolution, flood and earthquake, famine, sickness and plague, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson still live, fixed points in a changing universe, assuring us that all will yet be well; assuring us that it is both noble and ennobling to love that which is the loveliest and best.
Sherlock Holmes once summed up his view of life, "My ancestors were country squires, who appear to have led
