Introduction
With millions of albums sold, five Grammy Awards, and Forbes’ distinction as one of the world’s most powerful celebrities, Lady Gaga is one of the most well-known pop artists in the world. Known as much for her voice as for her over-the-top wardrobe, few recognize Lady Gaga for her stunning business acumen, giving her legions of loyal fans worldwide—fans who are eager to buy her music, concert tickets, and products. Her social networking prowess is off the charts with 35 million Twitter followers and 56 million likes
on Facebook. Not only has she created a brand but she is cultivating a fanatical group of consumers, known as her Little Monsters,
who will follow her for decades to come.
When she was Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she was the ugly freaky little duck of her Italian family. Nobody ever thought that she would become the beautiful but still freaky swan of pop music. She first revealed her talent for music at the age of 13 when she wrote her first piano ballad. This was her first step towards a music career, as she later went to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she studied art and politics but she left her studies for focusing on her music career. She didn’t have the financial and moral support of her family who was very upset for her school abandonment. So she rented the cheapest apartment she could find and lived in poverty until somebody finally listened to her.
Lady has become one of the world’s most famous and influential people in the world today. She is a pop icon and she has only been around a couple of years. She is a fashion queen and she is a personal brand. She has achieved what many people only dream of achieving in their lifetime. She is the type of person to look at and study in order to understand the dynamics of personal branding and what goes into creating a brand and how to stick with it, but at the same time, reinvent you.
Lady Gaga didn’t become the success she is today based solely on her talent. She did so by engendering immense loyalty from her fans through her music, her message, and the community she has built around them. To anyone in the business community, this sounds like a classic case of loyalty marketing and customer cultivation.
Lady Gaga has managed to become a celebrity and brand in her own right and she does this through several ways. Firstly, she portrays herself as her image and brand all the time. This means that she is never out of character
. She eats, breathes and sleeps Lady Gaga. She has made a name for herself in a certain mind-set of people and she never disappoints, always showing up in crazy outfits and saying the weirdest things. Lady Gaga has always been honest with herself, her fans and the media, and therefore nobody has really been able to paint a false image of her, because she is the one who states exactly what she wants said about herself. And this is a clever move as she has been in control of her fame and fortune from the beginning.
Lady Gaga keeps fans and media interested by reinventing herself and her outfits on a regular basis. People never know what to expect with Gaga and it is always exciting and such a thrill to wonder what she will step out in next. It is difficult to reinvent yourself like Gaga does because you can easily fall into the trap of getting lost in all the hype that you end up drowning yourself in your own ideas and people will not know who you are as an image and brand anymore. What Gaga did so well was always sticking to the theme of being crazy and making sure that whatever she puts on or does, has a Gaga
element to it.
GaGa is so influential in today’s pop culture, society and teens that the University of South Carolina developed a course based on her influences. The course, Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame
depicts the unraveling of Lady Gaga’s music, fashion, videos and artistic actions and their sociologically significant dimensions.
Hopefully this book on Lady GAGA: A Study of Fame in Personal Branding will serve as a step by step course to develop your own personal brand as the great celebrity has done it for herself.
Chapter – 1
Personal Brand of Lady Gaga
'You are a legend. Make a sculpture of you. Self-invention matters. You are the artist of your own life.'
Personal branding is the process of expressing your unique personality through your brand to your target audience. It is much more about who you are rather than what you offer. Love her or hate her, Lady G is the queen of personal
