    Chapter 1

Janae stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom and admired her outfit. I look hot, she thought. It had been a long hard week and she was looking forward to a night out on the town. Her friend Cashmere invited her out to a club called The Asylum. It was a popular reggae club in Miami Beach, Florida. Janae was new to Miami and was looking forward to meeting some new people. Cashmere assured her that the club would be crawling with men and since Janae was single she jumped at the chance to go check things out.

The doorbell rang and Janae pried herself away from the mirror to go answer the door.

What’s up, Mami, Cashmere said happily when Janae opened the door.

Hey girl, Janae said and hugged her friend.

Cashmere breezed in the door and headed straight for Janae’s bedroom.

Girl, do you think this dress is too tight? Cashmere asked as she looked at herself in the mirror.

Naw, it fits you just right, Janae said and looked in the mirror at her friend.

Cashmere was wearing a tight-fitting pink dress. It was very short and showed off her ample cleavage. Her long curly hair hung loosely on her shoulders. She called herself the ‘Puerto Rican Princess’ because she was half black, half Puerto Rican. Janae loved how Cashmere would curse in Spanish when she got angry. They had been friends for about six months now and Janae loved Cashmere like a sister.

So, turn around and let me check you out, Cashmere said and grabbed Janae’s hand. She pulled her in front of the mirror.

Janae was wearing white shorts and a gold halter top. Gold stilettos and gold hoop earrings finished off the outfit. Her long honey blonde hair was swept up in a ponytail.

Caliente Mami, Cashmere said and laughed.

Girl please, I just threw this together, Janae said and winked at her.

Well honey, let’s get outta’ here and go have some fun, Cashmere said and headed for the front door.

Janae grabbed her purse and followed her friend. They drove to the club in Cashmere’s Hyundai Sonata. She had the car tricked out with rims and tinted windows. The speakers were so loud you could hear the car from a mile away. It was painted bright orange and had the words Puerto Rican Princess on both sides in bright pink. Janae owned a red Mustang that her dad had left her when he died. She loved her car but when Cashmere offered to drive she didn’t refuse.

When they pulled into the parking lot of the club it was almost full. Janae looked around at the nice cars in the lot and imagined the owners. It must be some ballers in here, she thought. They got out of the car and headed inside the club. Janae could hear the music before they even reached the door. The bass was so loud it felt as if the club was shaking when they walked in.

I told you this place be jumping, Cashmere shouted over the music.

Janae nodded her head. She didn’t want to shout over the music. Cashmere was right about the club, it was packed. The DJ was saying something on the mic and the crowd went wild. Janae didn’t understand what he was saying because of his accent. The reggae song playing was nice but Janae was disappointed that she didn’t know what the words to the song meant. She looked around at the people in the club and to her surprise, there were some nice looking men standing around. Janae had imagined a bunch of Rasta looking Jamaicans with long dreads when Cashmere told her the club was a reggae spot. Even though there were men with dreads, Janae had to admit they looked damn good. She hadn’t been around any Jamaicans in her hometown of Cincinnati so she really didn’t know what to expect. The club was a bit dark but as Cashmere pulled her along Janae spotted quite a few nice looking men she would like to get to know.

So, what do you think so far? Cashmere asked once they reached the bar.

I mean we only been here a few minutes but I did see some nice looking men up in here and I like the music.

I knew you would be feeling this place once we got here. Wait till you get yo buzz on then hit the dance floor, Cashmere said and laughed.

Janae laughed and ordered a drink. She felt nervous and excited all at once. She hadn’t been out clubbing since she broke up with her ex three months ago. Tonight is definitely going to be interesting, she thought. After two drinks Janae and Cashmere hit the dance floor. Janae didn’t really know how to dance to the reggae music so she followed Cashmere’s lead and began to sway her hips to the beat. She closed her eyes and let the music guide her. Her hips swayed back and forth to the rhythm. A man came up behind her and began to dance with her. Janae opened her eyes and saw a chocolate colored, brown eyed, nicely built man moving his body in sync with hers. As the music played on he grabbed Janae’s hips and pulled her closer to him. Janae grinded her body against his and enjoyed every inch of him. She could feel his well-toned body bumping up against hers and a smile came over her face. She hadn’t been this close to a man since her ex and it felt damn good.

Mi like di way you dance, the man whispered in her ear in a heavy Jamaican accent.

Janae didn’t say anything; she just smiled and continued to move her body with his. She looked around for Cashmere and saw her dancing with a guy. The guy had picked her up and was bouncing her around. Cashmere didn’t seem to mind at all. She threw her head back and winded her hips on the man. Janae watched and laughed. She had never seen this kind of dancing before. There was a girl standing on her head in the middle of the floor and a crowd was gathering around her. The girl was shaking her ass and then dropped down into a split. The men went crazy and started yelling things in Jamaican. A man jumped on top of the girl and grinded against her hard. Janae stopped dancing with the man behind her and headed over to the middle of the floor to watch the action. She was intrigued by all the commotion. Cashmere came up beside her and pulled her hair.

I saw you, Mami. You was grinding all up on old boy.

Girl please, you was the one over there being picked up and tossed around, Janae said and laughed.

You know Papi wanna’ hit this fat ass, Cashmere said and slapped her butt.

What’s up with this dancing? Janae asked.

Girl, you haven’t seen anything yet. This is dancehall music so the girls like to dutty whine.

    What the hell is that?

You looking at it, Mami, Cashmere said and pointed to the girls in the middle of the floor.

Janae looked on and shook her head. She didn’t like the guys jumping on the girls like that or the girls being tossed around. She had to admit though that the girls could dance. Not my style but to each his own, she thought.

Wah gwan, a man said as he appeared beside Janae.

    Hi, she said tentatively.

Janae didn’t know much about the lingo the Jamaicans spoke but she did love the accent.

Mi wan buy you and your friend a drink.

    Okay, Janae said and shrugged.

Fuck a drink, he better buy a bottle, Cashmere said and led Janae to the bar.

Cashmere told the bartender what they wanted to drink and the guy paid.

So what’s your name, pretty gal? the man asked Janae.

Janae and that’s my girl Cashmere.

You look good, Janae. Mi wan get fi know you.

The bartender returned with a bottle of Moet in an ice pail and three glasses. Janae was impressed. She could buy her own bottle but it was nice to be treated to one.

Let’s go to a table, Cashmere said and grabbed the pail.

Janae grabbed the glasses and they walked over to a table. The man followed them and sat down next to Janae. He grabbed the bottle and poured everyone a drink. Janae looked him over from head to toe. He had a low haircut with waves; he was a dark chocolate color and from what Janae could see his body was slim but very nice. He was wearing a white button down shirt, black jeans, and white dress shoes. His diamond watch sparkled with each movement of his wrist. He wore one large diamond earring in his ear. Not bad, Janae thought as she sipped on her drink.

So what’s your name? Janae asked him.

Mi name is Xavier but you can call me X.

Well, Xavier is a nice name so imma’ call you that, Janae said and smiled.

He smiled back and sipped his drink. Cashmere finished her drink and poured herself another one. She bobbed her head to the music and looked around at the club. A man came over and whispered in Xavier’s ear and Xavier nodded to Cashmere. The man sat down and started talking to Cashmere.

    Who is that? Janae asked.

    Mi friend Andre.

Janae looked the man over and decided he was just her friend’s type. Cashmere liked flashy, hood type guys. The man was wearing a red baseball hat, a red t-shirt, and Levi’s. His gold and diamond chain sparkled in the dimly lit club. His pants sagged slightly and his red Jordans were laced but not tied. Janae shook her head. Definitely not for me, she thought. Janae liked a man who could dress but he had to be sophisticated with it. She didn’t like the pants sagging or the backward hats. Xavier met all of her qualifications.

You want another bottle? Xavier asked.

    I’m good, I don’t drink that much.

So what do you do for fun?

I hang out with my girls or chill at home. I haven’t lived here long enough to find much else to do.

    So where you come from?

I moved here from Cincinnati, Janae said and sighed.

She liked Miami but she often missed her friends and family back home. She moved to Miami to pursue her modeling career but her heart was still in Cincinnati.

Are you seeing someone here? Xavier asked.

I broke up with someone three months ago and I have been solo ever since.

Okay mi like that, Xavier said and smiled.

Janae glanced up and noticed Cashmere was out on the dance floor with Andre. She contemplated getting up to dance herself but she was enjoying talking to Xavier.

So can mi have your number so we can link up again? Xavier asked and pulled out his phone.

Janae smiled and put her number in the phone.

Mi wan see you again soon, Xavier said and touched her hand.

Well call me and we will see what happens, Janae said and winked at him.

Xavier smiled and got up from the table. Janae drank the last of the Moet and went to join Cashmere on the dance floor. When Cashmere saw Janae she ran over and threw her arms around her neck.

    Papi is fine! Cashmere shouted.

Yeah he is just your type, Janae said and laughed.

So what’s up with old boy that bought the bottle?

He seems cool. I like a man that knows how to dress, Janae said and smiled.

I like a man who knows how to spend money, Cashmere said and smacked her lips.

Janae laughed and rolled her eyes. Cashmere always admitted to being a gold
