Ross Collins

Ross Collins was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Growing up he was particularly fond of drawing the bionic man and precariously swinging backwards on chairs. He went on to study illustration at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1994 and in the same year he won the Macmillan Children’s Book Prize for the The Sea Hole. Since then he has gone on to illustrate over one hundred books and has written several too. His picture book The Elephantom was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal and has now been staged at London's Royal National Theatre by the creative team behind Warhorse and in 2016 This Zoo is Not for You won the inaugural Amnesty CILIP Honour. When Ross is not creating children’s books he enjoys working on character development for animation studios such as Laika and Disney. He lives with his partner Jacqui, his young son, and his dog Hugo, in Scotland.

Adorable! I chuckled out loud at the end. I think this story sends a sweet and useful message to kids with a little irony and humour.

In this book there is a mouse that finds a bear in his chair and he does everything he can think of do get the bear off. Once he gives up the bear finally gets up and finds that the mouse is in his house. This story is full of rhyming and expression.

An irate mouse does everything he can to shift the bear who is hogging his chair in this rhyming picture-book from Scotsman Ross Collins, but nothing seems to work. Glaring is ineffective, and his attempt to frighten the ursine interloper by jumping out in his underwear goes unnoticed. Finally, driven to distraction, the mouse goes off and finds another place to rest. Eventually getting bored, the bear heads home, only to discover that now he is the one who must deal with an intruder...Although apparently a prolific illustrator - according to the dust-jacket blurb, he has illustrated over one hundred books for children - There's a Bear on My Chair is the first title from Ross Collins that I have read. I found it entertaining, appreciating the rhyming text - always a winner, especially when reading aloud to younger children! - the humor of the various situations outlined, and the droll charm of the illustrations. Collins does a good job capturing his two characters' emotional states, from the absolute frustration of Mouse to the contented obliviousness of Bear, adding to the appeal of his text. Recommended to children who have experienced frustration at having to share (quite a large proportion of them, I would imagine), as well as to anyone looking for rhyming tales for younger children.
