Food security is defined as having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Until recently, most politicians thought that food security simply depended on a country’s ability to obtain the food needed for its inhabitants at affordable prices. To them, it was immaterial whether the food was produced locally or imported. As long as the price was right, everything was fine.
