    Preface & Disclaimer

This book is a reference. It aggregates research and information to help shed more light on our current pandemic. It is not meant to be medical advice. Please consult a doctor if you have any symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, etc. Consult a doctor before using any compounds, herbs, or medicines.

This book is a labor of love. I am not a medical professional, but my academic training enables me to read and interpret research and explore causal relationships. With extremely vulnerable people in my family, I wanted to understand more about this threat. Knowledge about the virus, its pathways, and how our body responds can help me make the best decisions for my family.

There is currently no official medicine for Coronavirus. The only treatment available to most severely affected patients is receiving oxygen and waiting it out. Trials are just starting for several very promising treatments. They offer hope in the long term.

Although COVID-19 is new, its modus operandi is very similar to SARS and MERS, two other respiratory coronaviruses. Many pathways involved in COVID-19 infection and disease are well-researched. We know that there are actions that can be taken every day to reduce risk and severity of viral infection.

Panic never brought out the best in people. We are all in this together. We should face our anxiety head-on. Every generation has faced a proving moment like this. There are many helpers we can look to.

In this time, to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors, we should be outward-looking. We should be especially aware of the most vulnerable among us, and should do what we can to protect them and ensure they have daily necessities during this time.

    Chapter 1: KNOW THE ENEMY

What is a virus and how does it replicate?

A virus is not exactly a living thing.

Most living things respond to their environment, grow, and reproduce. Viruses shirk most of these tasks. Instead, their sole function is to reproduce. A virus has two forms. Outside of cells, a virus is a tiny particle called a virion. A short strand of DNA or RNA is sealed in a protein coat called a capsid. Some viruses also have a layer of lipids called an envelope. The envelope helps the virus camouflage itself from the immune system.

The virus cannot get any energy or create any proteins by itself. In order to replicate, a virus must hijack living cells. A protein on the surface of the virus links to a specific protein on the living cell. The virus can only infect a cell if this receptor is present.

As the cellular receptors they hijack already have a function in the body, viruses may cause some harm just by destroying the cellular receptors. Once a virion links to a cell, it injects its DNA or RNA  into the cell. This is the virus's second form.

As a simple chain of genetic information, the DNA's or RNA's job is to hijack the cell's own protein-manufacturing equipment. Cells use organelles called ribosomes to make  proteins used to perform bodily functions and maintain healthy tissues. The virus wants to focus the cell's whole energy on producing new viruses.

The virus interrupts the protein-manufacturing part of a cell's communication with the command center in its nucleus. Then the viral RNA is translated by the cell, producing more viruses. After the cell produces copies of the virus, the virus triggers signals that cause the cell to go through apoptosis, or cell death. The cell breaks apart, spewing newly-minted viruses into its environment. These go on to infect more cells.

    What is COVID-19?

Scientists can analyze the genome of viruses. They compare the genome to viruses common
