About this ebook

'Safari Park' is one of a series of 5 books which focus on developing music across the primary/elementary curriculum. A special feature is that of suggesting ways in which visiting musicians can support and liaise with schools to enhance the music curriculum. The activities begin with simple exploration of sound and pictorial notation. They progress into developing compositions through awareness of musical elements, rhythm, melody and accompaniments. Ways of recording are explored, as are ways to develop percussion and other instrument compositions into vocal compositions. Throughout, there are tips for visiting musicians such as peripatetic teachers, local Hubs, to support generalist class teachers. In this way the materials promote the concept of liaison between musicians and schools.

    ABOUT THIS BOOK

‘Safari Park is one of a series of books which develop activities in a progressive way. They suggest ideas for liaison between school staff and Visiting Musicians.

The focus of these materials is on exploring sound (vocal and instrumental), working with others to refine and select sounds for progressively developed compositions.

The book revisits the initial activity (the Safari Park trail) twice. This allows children to consider the learning and musical progress that has taken place, and to compare with younger/older children to both reflect and anticipate the progress.

The activities in the book are intended to be presented to increasingly older children (from Reception through to end of Key Stage 2), but much will depend on children’s previous music experiences. Therefore teachers’ expectations should match children’s experiences.

    Progressing through this book.

The following ‘progression’ list links with the activities in this book, but earlier bullets should not be abandoned as children move on.

    - Explore vocal representations – incorporate body, ‘found’, percussion and instrumental
