About this ebook

Jethro laid there in the mud on the side of the trench just high enough to get his head over the top. His 303 British-made rifle was cocked and ready to fire. He had his finger on the trigger. Jethro would constantly worry about where his bullets would fall. The mortar and machine gun fire were deafening but not loud enough to drown out the repetitious sound in his head, "Thou shalt not kill, … Thou Shall Not Kill,.. THOU SHALT NOT KILL.” His fear of the battle going on in his mind was worse than the real battlefield that he was fighting on. He didn’t know how much longer he could fight this battle, in his mind, with his God.. At this point in time there was no way that he could know that he would never point a firearm at any human being again after this day. ...

    Preface

Jethro Reid is a true short story that I was compelled to write by my friends at first, then by my own conscience after I learned all the facts. His story was a great addition to my book (mostly chronicles) of Tales of My Heart's Delight. He was as modest a man as I, and most of you, will have ever known or heard of. His story takes him through a time when things were very different than they are now, but a time that many of you that are my age and older can easily relate to. We are still the connecting factor between two worlds, the present and the past, the new and the old world. From a time that we sat in a box, crapped into a hole in the ground, and got double use out of a Simpson Sears catalogue to a time where we turn up the electric heat, use extra soft- scented toilet tissue and read a golf magazine. But never forget this one thing, the crap was, and will always be, the same. His world was, of course, mostly connected to the old world. He lived through the two Great Wars (fought in one) and the great Depression. He was not a very big man, at least in physical stature, standing on his toes, only measuring in at 5 feet 6 inches (military records). But don't let that fool you, what he lacked in physical size he exponentially made up for in his strength of character, his benevolent actions, and the almost supper human abilities to withstand pain, which power he attributed to his God. When you read it, you will understand of which I have told you. I would like to thank all the people who gave me information about Jethro, his family, his life in general. Especially Stuart Traverse whom I call the walking HD encyclopedia. Remember this, I may be the writer of this story, or any other of my HD stories, but it is you my HD friends who, with your assistance of information, that help me make it happen. So, relax, it's a short story. Put your feet up for a little while and walk with Jethro through his life, feel his pain, feel his joy. The life of another true Heart's Delight hero.

Chapter 1... Jethro Reid, another HD hero.

Jethro Reid, born into a large family with eight siblings, ..Well, let's reconsider that statement from the start and say, born into a family of average size, for that period of time. One thing for sure, the family size may have been average, but Jethro's life would be anything but average. His father Levi Reid, and his mother Anne (Chislett) Reid could be no better parents to him even if he had the chance to pick them himself before he was born. This fact, no doubt, played a big part in the life of Jethro and how he would handle, challenge, and manage some unique situations that were to come his way.

Heart's Delight was a community not unlike any other of the many fishing villages along the rugged coast of Newfoundland. It had its good points and it had its bad points and one of those bad points had been passed down from generation to generation. It was the intolerance of many of its citizens toward change in some social structures, religion being the most obvious one. And it would be no different with his part of the Reid family.

From that time not long after Levi was born, he saw his God as being a little different than that of the Church of England faith, the main denomination of most of the small communities, and their doctrine of such faith. And nor did he trend toward the Catholic faith, the next biggest church. For him, they were one and the same, though not many considered that to be true back then. But Levi was ahead of his time and did not 'sheep' with the crowd. He had a mind of his own and he didn't care much about what anyone else thought, everyone had a right to their own beliefs and to do what they thought was right for themselves, as should we all, and that was his opinion. But this was a dangerous road to follow and still have a healthy ending and Levi would find that out the hard way, but it didn't stop him. And I am quite sure that Jethro saw all of this, knew about all of this, and, whether consciously or not, built his staunch and determined character from these beginnings and that situation that he was born into. So, Levi, with this conviction, set out to change the structure of this small community or, at least, add his own footprint to it.

Chapter 2...His wife for life, their Faith Forever

Levi was born, raised, schooled (such as it was) lived and died in Heart's Delight. To
