    Chapter 1

President Bridget Morganson and her husband Thomas Tucker, who under new rules was now the vice president, sat in the Oval Office having a top secret discussion with her chief of staff, Kelly Anderson, Lisa Beaufort secretary of state, Troy Boswell secretary of defense, Brandt Southern who was the main intelligence person in attendance, several high level advisors from the pentagon and William Everson, known to his associates as Wired Willie, the Home Land Security Advisor.

Bridget was now in her second term as the first female president of the United States. She followed Buster Tramp who, after radically changing election rules, died in the middle of his fourth term. The world was a much different place after Buster Tramp made many foolish changes and put the world on the brink of war.

Bridget was explaining a project that some in attendance knew of and some didn’t.

The secret had been kept on a ‘Need to know’ basis; many who worked on parts of the whole knew nothing of what they were building. The project’s existence had been extremely difficult to keep under wraps since its cost was measured in trillions of dollars. Most of the country believed the money was being spent on preparations for war.

Bridget began the project in her first term by diverting defense funds. Many of her closest advisers were adamantly opposed to the whole idea calling it Bridget’s folly.

She began her explanation with an admission that she had this in mind even before her election. She had thought it ridiculous to prepare for a war that no one could win. Instead she embarked on a project to build a ship that would go to the planet Saturn. She had always wondered what it would look like up close. She knew that when word got out she would be considered to be crazy and she sometimes thought that she was. She would certainly be impeached.

She explained to the group that the ship was ready for takeoff and will leave tomorrow before dawn. It’s too late for anyone to stop it. Only NASA personnel with high level clearances will witness the take off. Many personnel at Edwards Air Base have been wondering what was going on in the largest hanger ever constructed. Tomorrow they will know. The ship can take off on the recently expanded runway at Edwards and can land there as well although that will take place about 25 to 30 years from now.

Troy Boswell, a close friend of the president who knew vaguely of the project and couldn’t help knowing that money was being diverted from defense asked how many are going on the trip.

She answered twenty. And by the way Mike my press secretary is here and will release the story as soon as the ship leaves the ground. We don’t want any leaks lest someone should try to shoot it down.

Mike Rawley asked what are the names of the twenty passengers?

The President turned to Brandt asking him to answer the question.

Brandt began with "The astronauts were chosen through a very careful vetting procedure. First of all we wanted only people who have spent considerable time in space but we still wanted them to be fairly young. After all they will be traveling for about twenty five years and a distance of well over two billion miles. After interviewing dozens of prospects we decided on sending couples who are actually lovers. We may allow a few children to be born in space. I will be publishing the list of names as soon as they have departed. They asked us to do it like that so they will have privacy while in preparation. In space they will use first names only. I can give you those now. The lucky couples are Neil and Sally, Alan
