    Babysitter’s Desire

Nala watched the children sleep and smiled to herself. They were too adorable, and she would not mind some of her own. She loved these children and liked the way they did everything. They played together, they read and did things that Nala never did with anyone else. To them, she was more of an elder sister than a babysitter. And the children always got sick when Nala did not show up. How they had gotten to this point, no one knew. This was because Nala was not that type.

To the outside world, Nala was something else. She did not have qualities that people liked. She was too intelligent and too aloof. She did not have many friends, and the ones she had always seemed to be below her. They always seemed to be trying to live up to her standards. Some did not even care. They were only her friend because it was awkward to call it quits. And with the friendship came a lot of things, such as respect. Nala did not care too much; it was not like they even met often.  She liked the kind of life she was living.

Working as a babysitter was something she enjoyed. She had not thought about it at first. She never thought she would like to stay with children. She was the last born in her family so she hated the idea of staying with children because none of her elder siblings ever wanted to stay with her. They always thought she was annoying. But then again, Nala was an annoying kid.  She was always playing or doing things she was not supposed to be doing. It was hard to control her.

Things only changed when she got into her teenage years. She came home one day and did not speak to anyone. For the first time the house was quiet. And a month later, she was still avoiding anyone. People were concerned at first until they finally got used to her silence. She avoided everyone in her life, preferring to stay by herself most of the time. And that was where she lost most of her friends. She was growing up finally and getting quieter. Finally, she was a transformed girl who did not care about anyone. That, however, did not mean she was cruel.

She only started playing well with children at a park when her parents decided the family needed an outing. Nala found herself drawn to some children who were playing nearby and what started as an inquiry of what the children were doing, turned out to be a full scale playing session with a lot of children involved. That was when her father mentioned that she could be a good babysitter. She had a hand for children. She could entertain them. Her elder brother said she would work well as a beautiful clown. Her mother thought she was going to make a good mother and her elder sister finally came up with the idea of Nala joining her for an evening party. Nala took her father’s advice.

Stepping out of the room, Nala walked to the living room and looked at the clock. Her employers were supposed to be home already. She, herself, was supposed to be home already. And true to that word, her phone rang. It was her mother. She wanted to know where Nala was. The woman always called when Nala did not get home on time. She did not care that Nala was old enough. As long as she was staying under the same roof as her mother, she was supposed to be taken care of.

Nala knew that her employers were not going to come home early tonight. She had overheard an argument and knew that the woman of the house was not happy. Not that she cared. They were grown up and they could handle their business. All she wanted was her money. It was why she was working in the first place. And she knew that the man of the house was pulling her into a party she was not interested in attending. So she knew that he was going to make her wait there longer than it was necessary.

Knowing that, Nala decided she was going to make herself comfortable. He would always drive her home after they came late. It was actually an added advantage because she would save on money for a taxi. It was not long before the house was lit by the headlights of them coming back home. She did not move. They were most probably going to ignore her. And they did so. The man walked in fast, angrily muttering something inaudible. He walked to the kitchen, then went upstairs. The woman was next.

She noticed Nala but did not say a word. She was angry as well. And she also walked to the kitchen, drank some water and then walked upstairs. They talked for a few minutes, each trying hard not to shout before the man came down again.

Get ready, I am driving you home, he said and Nala shot to her feet.

Where the hell do you think you are going Sam? the woman asked coming after him. She could now talk loudly without the fear of waking the children.

I thought you didn’t want me around Katie, he said turning to her.

You are still upset? she started, today was your entire fault.

Oh sure, I pushed you to flirt with those men, right? Sam roared walking towards her for a minute there.  Nala thought Katie was going to get slapped. But he did not. He did not even clench his fist; he simply looked down on her.

You took me to that party against my wishes, and you made me overstay. I had to bring you home, she said staring back at him.
