What exactly is good hair anyway?  When I was growing up you were considered to have good hair if your hair was naturally curly and you had a wavy curl pattern.  Most of the girls I knew that fit this description were of a mixed race, so basically the rule of thumb was that if you happened to be bi-racial, the result was that you had good hair.  Back then, kinky curly hair was not the business, instead women with kinky curly hair were said to have nappy hair aka bdb’s.  So what about the millions of other people, especially black women and including myself, who are not mixed?  Does that mean we all have bad hair?  Does that mean we all have nappy hair?  Absolutely not!  I’m here to tell you that those days are very much long gone!  Now, that naturally curly, wavy type of hair is still considered to be pretty, but just because my hair doesn’t look like that, or just because I’m not mixed or bi-racial doesn’t mean my hair is bad.  Now I will share what I have been telling my clients for years.  The secret to having good hair is to have healthy hair.

Healthy hair is very easy to get and even easier to maintain as long as you know the basics and are willing to put in the work.  The hardest part is actually taking time out and doing it.  Once you are equipped with the proper knowledge and have established a routine that is proven to work for you and customized to your specific hair needs, then you will be well on your way to having good hair.

Some of the basics to great hair care include wrapping your hair, trimming your ends, understanding how and when to use heat, and using the correct products like shampoo and conditioner for your hair.  I will go in -depth with each section and fully explain how important each of these categories are, separately as well as collectively.

Let’s start with what I consider to be one of the most effective things you can do to take care of your hair which is wrapping.  Wrapping your hair is such a simple task but has so many advantages to it.  Wrapping your hair is a method of protecting your hair where you basically use your head as a giant roller and literally wrap your hair around your head and secure it with a silk or satin scarf.  There are several advantages to wrapping your hair every night which include:

Preserving your style- Wrapping is one of the single most important things you can do to help maintain the way your style looks right after you leave the salon.  Every woman wants to be able to keep her hair looking like she just left the salon.  Wrapping your hair allows you the opportunity to do that.

Protecting your ends- Most women don’t enjoy getting their ends trimmed, especially when they are on a quest to attaining longer hair.  Unfortunately, once they start splitting, trimming the dead ends is the only way to repair them.  Failure to get your ends trimmed on a regular basis only leads to the ends continuing to split up the hair shaft which in turn leads to getting more hair cut in the long run.  Wrapping the hair does not prevent the ends from splitting but it does help prolong it so that you won’t have to do it as often as you would if you didn’t wrap the hair at all.  Sleeping with your hair uncovered exposes your hair to unnecessary friction caused by rubbing against the cloth on your bedding.  Hair that is wrapped in a silk scarf is protected from that friction which can cause the ends to split prematurely.  If you are unable to wear a scarf on your head nightly or for long periods of time, you can also sleep on a satin pillow case or use a satin cap.  These items will not be as effective as wrapping, but will be much more effective than not using anything at all.

Helps your relaxers last longer- Women with relaxers don’t like to see any new growth showing, but instead want the hair to always look silky straight.  Once you get into a routine of wrapping your hair every night you will notice that you are able to go longer and longer in between your touch ups, instead of getting them every six weeks which seems to be the standard.
