I. Petitions & Laments
But who knows the fate of his bones, or how often he is to be buried?
— Sir Thomas Browne, Urn Burial, 1658
Petition to Mount Vesuvius
As hard as I threw stones,
none reached the crater
steaming below. I'd hoped
a lucky toss might trigger
the cliffs to shudder a little,
they seemed so darkly still.
I felt hardly real, an empty shadow
like the hollows of the Pompeii dead
that plaster had to fill before
a solid cast could be made.
Shapes rose from the steam,
soliciting my desire to join their kin
and leave the crater to its own
dormant face. But I could not deny the heat
under my skin. Erupt! I cried,
wanting to dream my life
without the effort of living it.
Urban Wind
A sudden gust downtown
and all the car alarms
react. Nobody can stand
still. At the zoo, pinwheels
spin the symmetry of
used car lots, where a trim
of flags and windsocks gauges
the air wildly. There's even
a current behind the boneyard fence
where the parts man holds the part
I need in his fist. How much?
I ask. He shouts a figure.
In the gale, it sounds like a deal.
Star Gazing with Binoculars
Telescopes bring the stars closer but also
speed them up: by the time they're in focus,
they're already drifting out of range. Binoculars
by contrast, will make your arms ache
