About this ebook
THE INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER
Spencer Quinn's Heart of Barkness is the latest in the New York Times bestselling series that the Los Angeles Times called “nothing short of masterful"…
Chet the dog, “the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction” (Boston Globe) and P.I. Bernie encounter heartache and much worse in the world of country music. They’re both music lovers, so when Lotty Pilgrim, a country singer from long ago, turns up at a local bar, they drive out to catch her act. Bernie’s surprised to see someone who was once so big performing in such a dive, and drops a C-note the Little Detective Agency can’t afford to part with into the tip jar. The C-note is stolen right from under their noses – even from under Chet’s, the nose that misses nothing – and before the night is over, it’s stolen again.
Soon they’re working the most puzzling case of their career, a case that takes them back in time in search of old border-town secrets, and into present-day danger where powerful people want those secrets to stay hidden. Chet and Bernie find themselves sucked into a real-life murder ballad where there is no one to trust but each other.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heart of Barkness(Chet and Bernie Mystery #9)by Spencer QuinnThis really was an incredible story/plot! I found it slowed down a bit too much about halfway through then kicked right up again. Worth the wait. Would have been a solid 5 for sure! I enjoyed it anyway. This was the only book I figured out before the ending. I still enjoy this series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5After a C-note that Bernie had put in a singer’s tip jar is stolen right in front of everyone, including Chet, the two take off after the thief. This begins a merry chase that leads them back decades to a cold case, and then to a current one that involves murder. Secrets, cover-ups, and the framing of an innocent woman all factor into this story. It’s a love story gone bad, perfect for the county singer this tale revolves around. As with the rest of this series, the real enjoyment comes from Chet’s doggy narration, always a skewed delight.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5After all but killing off Bernie in book #8, Quinn has his heroes make a return of this delightful series.Although there is a dog narrator there are also dark undertones in all these books that rescue them from being cutesey. In Heart of Barkness, Bernie sees a poster for a local appearance of a fading country star, Lotty Pilgrim, who should be rich from her past hits but seems to scraping the bottom of the barrel. In many ways, both in the book and in the Youtube recording of the song that she wrote for Chet, Lotty reminds me of Dolly Parton - sweet and talented. Anyway, there's a murder and the boys are on it. All comes out in the end. Loved it.
