About this ebook

This is the one thing we can control.

  • We can change our mindsets in one second.
  • There is no cost. It's free to do.
  • The world responds, giving us better results.

Instead of letting our mindsets control us, here is our chance to determine our future.

Our first surprise is that nature gives us a negative mindset. We have programs that fear everything. Nature wants us to survive. Surviving is good, but achieving is great.

And what about others? Can they affect our mindsets? Certainly, if we let them. This book gives us the tools to take control of our minds. Why be victims when we can be victors?

Not only can we use these mindset skills for our personal success, but we can also change the mindsets of others. We can put our groups on the path to more positive outcomes and growth.

What is magical about changing our mindsets?

Other people can detect our mindsets and will react to them. This is how we can affect the outcomes in our lives. So even before we help others change their mindsets, our personal mindsets give us a big head start toward our goals.

Why wouldn't we change our mindsets? Because we don't know how.

Let's learn the precise skills to make this happen.

    Preface

Screaming motivational speaker: You have to change your mindset!

Us: Sounds good, but what does that mean in real life? Exactly what is a mindset? How is it controlled? How did the mindset get there anyway?

Screaming motivational speaker: Don’t think! Stop being a loser! Be like me!

Yeah, that is not very helpful. How can we change our mindset, and the mindsets of our team members, if we don’t know the basics of human mindsets?

Mindsets sound important. Unfortunately, we spent our school years studying geometry and world history. We wish we could go back in time to change our school courses, but there are no time travel portals yet.

    Some examples of mindsets?

    Winning mindset.

    Success mindset.

    Leadership mindset.

    Servant mindset.

They sound great. But what do they mean? How do they affect our lives? And can we change them?

We will first learn about mindsets, and then we will open our toolbox of mindset-changing skills. Yes, there are specific things we can do now to change our mindsets.

Let’s have fun using the tools.

The one thing we can do now ... to make a difference immediately.

My friend’s one-year-old baby staggered like a drunk with muscle spasms, like he was walking on marbles. Crash, tip over, a few dizzy swirls followed by a more spectacular wipeout. His baby got back up and repeated the accident sequence.

Splat! Face-first. Oh, that has to hurt.

His baby got up. Tried again. Head-first collision with a furniture edge. It was painful to watch.

Psychologist Carol Dweck would say, "This baby has Mindset #1: a growth mindset."

Babies fail a lot. They consider failure a learning experience. To them, failure just means there’s a lesson to learn. It’s a chance to discover something new such as:

Learning to eat with a fork without taking out an eye.

Going down the stairs feet-first instead of head-first.

Looking in the same direction they are walking (took my granddaughter three years to master that).

How to get to the next level in a video game.

In a way, small children embrace failure because they know they will get better as they figure things out. Life is like a giant jigsaw puzzle. They are learning where one piece goes at a time. If a puzzle piece doesn’t fit, they don’t scream, I am a failure! They simply try to find the proper place for that puzzle piece.

But what happens at age 18?

Most teenagers open up their heads, pour in cement, and stop learning. They already know it all and develop a fixed mindset. Their mindsets are who they are. They believe their personalities and lives are set.

If they make mistakes after age 18, they feel those mistakes are a personal assault on their images. Mistakes are no longer a learning experience. Mistakes are personal humiliations that make them look stupid. Any failures are judgments on their character. Ouch.

    What about advice from others?

Fixed mindset people perceive advice as criticism. They choose to believe others are not trying to be helpful. They think others are snickering while pointing out their failures.

What about us as network marketers? Our early failures hurt. We feel judged and embarrassed with every prospect’s rejection. We try to avoid rejection at all costs.

    Two mindsets.

#1. A growth mindset. Every failure is a lesson to learn and grow.

#2. A fixed mindset. Every failure is a personal judgment and demotivating.

The mindset we choose can determine our success in network marketing. Yes, we can choose.

If we choose a fixed mindset, every rejection feels embarrassing. We don’t want anyone to see us get rejected. This forces us to stop our prospecting activity, and default to something safe such as watching television.

If we choose a growth mindset, every rejection is a learning experience. We look forward to adjusting our approach and improving with each encounter. This feels like we are testing to find the best ways to succeed.

Which mindset do we and our team members want?

A growth mindset, of course. That is the easy part. Anyone can wish for a growth mindset for their team members, but how do we make it happen?

This will take some work and special skills. But before we invest our time and energy into learning the special skills, let’s ask ourselves, Is this worth it?

    Yes!

Many teams are comprised of 10% active members, and 90% inactive members!

What happened? The 90% quit because of their fixed mindsets. No one showed them how to change their fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

Most formal schooling teaches us to memorize facts. They don’t teach us
