Jump Into Punch Needle - Carrie Buck

    Introduction

Making something by hand has always brought me enjoyment and satisfaction.

As a teenager, I explored many fiber art techniques. I remember writing directions on how to macramé a belt to share with a friend. The directions were complete with drawings for every step. After proudly presenting the fruit of my labor to her, I discovered she wasn’t my market when she replied, I don’t want to make one—I just want one!

If, like me, you find great pleasure in the creative process, this book is for you. Maybe something you create from this book will become a gift for someone like my friend, who just wants one!

This book features six needle-punched projects for a variety of purposes. For some of them, I’ve included bonus finishing ideas so you can experiment with different ways of using the punch needle designs. There is a helpful embroidery stitches chapter at the back of the book for reference.

If you are new to punch needle, this book will get you started. If you are experienced, please enjoy these new designs!

THE BASICS OF PUNCH NEEDLE EMBROIDERY

Punch needle embroidery involves using a small hollow needle through which you run your embroidery floss. You punch the needle into fabric, creating loops on the underside of the fabric. In this book, each punch of the needle into the fabric that creates a loop is referred to as a stitch. The finished piece is referred to as a patch.

You can use one to six strands of floss for punch needle. You can also use perle cotton. For the projects in this book, I used three strands of floss and a needle size appropriate for three strands of floss, but the technique is the same no matter how many strands of floss and what size needle you use. Once you learn the basic technique, you can experiment with larger needles and more strands of floss or perle cotton.
