Abraham Maslow

Basic Information
Was born in Brooklyn, New York on the first of April, 1908. Immersed himself into Psychology at an early age. Completed his B.A in Psychology in 1930, his Masters in 1931, and his doctorate in 1934.

Field of Research
Studied primates while in Wisconsin. Tested and measured children and adult intelligence and their ability to learn. Became more interested in social behavior, personality traits, self-esteem, and motivation theory as he produced more of his works.

Important Contributions
Wrote the Hierarchy of Needs. Explained 5 fundamental human needs and their nature. (Physiological needs, Safety needs, Belonging needs, Esteem needs, and Self-actualization needs)

Why Maslow is Important


His Hierarchy is quoted and taught so widely that many people perceive his model as the definitive set of needs and dont look further. Covers and explains mental illnesses, peak experiences, and self-actualization. Believes human nature is good or neutral rather than bad or evil. Thought Freudian psychologists placed too much emphasis on human weaknesses.

Interesting Facts
Is Jewish. Married and had 2 kids with his first cousin Bertha Goodman. Mentored by Harry Harlow. Passed away at the age of 61 from a heart attack.
