Stories
Mahim 1996. I, Khairunnisa was a 15 year old girl, in March 1996 and had appeared for my SSC exams.
I was a student of R. C. Mahim Municipal Secondary School. I belonged to an economically backward
family, living in one of the most densely populated slums in India. Going to college was an impossible
dream. One of my teachers introduced me to Rahat Welfare Trust. Then, I, with a lot of hope, met Irfan,
Sir, President of Rahat Welfare Trust. He asked me some questions, and filled a Rahat application form.
After that Rahat Welfare Trust provided me almost everything I required to go to college: Fees, note
books, text books, picnic expenses umbrellas, stationery etc and also a monthly amount for ration and
food for my family. Time passed, I completed my graduation with a B.Com degree. All this was very
difficult but with encouragement and inspiration from Rahat I did it!!!. I am now gainfully employed as
a Senior Clerk in a Secondary School; I am a wife and a mother, enjoying a settled life. All the Best to
Rahat..
Damam, Saudi Arabia, 2012. Javed Khan was one of our first students He lost his father when he
was in the eight standard.. this was in 1992.. Javed and his brother were sponsored under Rahats Total
Educational Support Scheme, (TESS). They received everything they needed to go to school
Rahat tracked their educational career, provided moral support. (Javed became over confident, he failed
in his Degree Exams). Rahat enhanced its support, offered encouragement, financial support, remedial
coaching. Javed also became a Rahat Volunteer!! Javed passed his B. Com exams securing a first
Class. He showed a flair for computers Was very soon employed got married, saved money, bought
a flat in Powai, Mumbai Worked in Kuwait and currently is working in senior position in a Multinational
Computer Company, in Damam, Saudi Arabia.. Indeed a classic Rahat Shining Star!!! Mashallah. And
the best thing is that Javed is a Rahat DONOR for the past so many years!!!! Well done, Sir!
North Mumbai. (After a demolition of some slums in north Mumbai a man committed suicide. This is the
story of his daughter, whom we shall not name). The Story. We are two sisters and three brothers
We were all in school when father died.. I was so depressed and everything was dark and hopeless
And it appeared that we would not be able to continue with our schooling But God be Praised we
came across Rahat Welfare Trust. In 2012.. I have appeared for my BA Degree exams, my sister has
passed her HSC exams.. and my brothers too our set in their educational careers. I have no hesitation in
saying that... we have been able to lead a better life only due to Rahat. One important fact that needs to
be stated is that Rahat did not look at our marks. It looked at our need. And our right to get a decent
education.
Madanpura, South Mumbai. 2006. There are some stories which really scare us.. One story is that of
Zubeda whose husband died from Aids on 23
rd
October 2006. Zubeda herself is HIV+ she has one
daughter, Farida, who is now going to an English Medium School in the 9
th
standard. Her annual school
Fees is Rs12000/- a month. Annual Bus Fees is Rs 6000/- Rahat intervened in this story in 2006 just
when Zubedas father died. Rahat has been tracking Zubeda since 2006 when she was in the 3
rd
standard. Rahat has a unique system of continuing assistance under its Total Educational
Sponsorship Scheme. We hope to continue helping Farida as long as she continues with her
education
Rahat is currently helping over One Thousand students, enabling them to take care of themselves and
to live a life of Dignity and Self Respect. These are the role models who have shown that a better world
is possible. These are the shining stars who have enriched our efforts and have given an abiding meaning
to our work. And we say this with great responsibility: Only Rahat would have picked up the Rahat
Scholars whose success ( and survival ) stories we have shared. All names have been changed to protect
the identity and dignity of the students involved.
ZAKAT COLLECTION. Rahat activities are funded mainly through the Zakat collection in Ramzan every
year. And Rahat does need funds on a consistent and larger level if it is to help more children like Javed
Khan and Zubeda We therefore request you to send Rahat a part of your Zakat this Ramzan.
(Donations are also welcome). No amount is too small not to be of help. Please ask at least two other
persons to do the same. Zakat/Donations may be sent by a personal cheque in favor of Rahat Welfare

Bhopal: A 12 year case fell through when six Muslim
youths, said to be former members of SIMI, acquitted
honourably by a court here on 10 July. They were
booked under sections 153 (A), (B) of IPC in 2000 for
allegedly pasting posters on a mosque which, according
to the police, promoted hatred among communities. But
with this acquittal the case built up by the police and pros-
ecution fell like a house of cards. The media, which goes
to town, whenever a Muslim youth is arrested, rather kid-
napped, was silent. There was hardly any coverage of
this acquittal. Only some local Hindi newspapers covered
the news but in a perverted style -- they taunted the
Police and government for not building up a strong case
against Desh Drohis.
Advocate Parvez Alam who fought this case in Bhopal
district court told TCN that there was huge number of
gaffes in this case which the police and prosecution had
fabricated. He said, First of all this case was illegal from
the very beginning. Police filed chargesheet five years
after registering the case, police didnt even make a
panchnama on its allegation that posters were pasted on
the mosque walls. But despite these facts this case
dragged on for 12 years before a verdict came which in
itself is a mockery of justice. Advocate Alam ontinued to
explain the errors in the prosecution: Additional charges
from UAPAwere slapped on them, and a secondary officer
from home ministry granted the sanctions. This was in con-
flict with section 45 of the said Act which states that the
order for the prosecution in this Act should be granted by
the highest officer in the state govt. Police failed to prove
in the court that the posters presented by them were the
ones pasted by SIMI members and all the witnesses of the
prosecution went hostile. Muneer Deshmukh, former
General Secretary of SIMI, was one of the six acquitted in
this case. Others are Arshad Bilgrami, Khalid Nayeem,
Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Aleem, and Sohrab Ahmad.
After getting acquitted, Arshad Bilgrami is now having
something to cheer for, because just five days before this
acquittal, he was convicted in a similar case registered in
a different police station. The irony of this poster case is
that different police stations have registered cases on the
same kind of poster against these persons. As a result,
they had to fight same case again and again. This is a
standard Police ploy to wreck such youths.
Arshad told TCN, I am obviously delighted on getting
acquitted. This case was built up against us in October
2000. Ever since, I was facing continuous harassment by
the police. I even spent two months in jail for this very case.
And now after 12 years I am being declared innocent. He
added that after this judgment he is confused and com-
pelled to think where the judiciary of this country is moving.
He said, Earlier on 5 July this year I got convicted in a sim-
ilar case. The poster presented by the police was same,
even the witnesses were same as the one in which I was
acquitted on 10 July. There cant be two different judgments
for the same case. Either I am guilty or innocent. Judiciary
cannot hang me in between. This makes me believe that
there are some elements in judiciary which are working
under pressure. But still this 10th July judgment has boost-
ed my hopes, and we will challenge the July 5 judgment in
the higher court. Let the highest judiciary decide which
judgment was right, based on the pressure from outside or
based on the facts and law of the land.
7 accused in Jalna mosque
blast case acquitted
Jalna: The district and sessions court here on 18 July
acquitted all the seven accused in the Qadria Masjid bomb
blast case due to lack of evidence. The seven accused in
the case, Maroti Keshwarao Wagh, Yogesh Ravindra
Deshpande, Gururaj Jayram Tuptewar, Rahul Manohar
Pande, Sanjay alias Bharauo Vittal Chowdhari, Himanshu
Panse (all residents of Nanded) and Rakesh Dhawade
(Pune) were acquitted in the case due to lack of evidence.
On August 27, 2004, a bomb was hurled in the mosque dur-
ing the prayer. Seven persons had received injuries in the
blast. The imam of of the mosque Sayyed Kausar had
lodged a complaint with Sadar Bazar police station in this
connection. One of the accused Himanshu Panse had died
in a blast in Nanded while he was preparing a bomb. The
local crime branch arrested the six accused and filed
charge sheets against them. When the case came up for
hearing, judge PH Gajbhiye recorded statements of 28 wit-
nesses in the case. Statements of the then tehsildar and
ATS and local crime branch officers were also recorded.
After hearing both the sides, the judge acquitted all the
seven accused due to lack of evidence. Advocate Sanjive
Deshpande, Vipul Deshpande, Nitin Runwal and
Babasaheb Tengle pleaded the case, while Pradeep
Jadhav worked as government pleader. After the judgment,
jubilant RSS workers distributed sweets on the court prem-
ises. Dhawade and others are also accused in the Nanded,
Parbhani and Malegaon blast cases. (PTI)

AFSANA RASHID, SRINAGAR
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that Kashmir is not an inter-
nal problem of India but a political issue between India and
Pakistan. Unless the two countries sit and talk to solve it political-
ly, it will continue to remain there, said the chief minister, while
addressing party workers on the 12th death anniversary of his
grandmother, Begum Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, here at her
mausoleum at Hazratbal, July 11.
Omar said Jammu and Kashmir isnt an issue of development
and money. It is a political issue having both internal and external
dimensions that need to be addressed. The time has come to make
dialogue process between India and Pakistan result-oriented. He
added bigger, issues cant be settled in just a few meetings, but
smaller issues including strengthening of cross-LoC trade by con-
verting its barter status into normal trading pattern, hassle-free
travel across LoC, resolution of Sir Creek and likewise can be
addressed.
Reacting to the Armys statement that the situation in the state
was alarming, chief minister after casting his vote for the presiden-
tial polls at the Legislature complex here July 19 said, There is no
alarming situation here. Such words only create panic. The fact is
that with every passing year militancy is declining. If there is any
problem it points to failure in the security grid.
Lt Gen Om Prakash, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of
Armys Srinagar based 15 Corps, July 17 said, It is an alarming sit-
uation in view of some recent incidents of shootout at Pampore,
Kulgam and Rajpora in south Kashmir. There are civil intelligence
reports that handlers were urging militants to carry out suicide
attacks on security forces. Reacting to media-reports that had
quoted al-Qaedas Pakistan commander Farman Ali Shinwari as
saying that in case of war in Kashmir, militant group will fight Indian
forces; the GOC said it will not allow al-Qaeda to establish its
foothold in the valley.
BJP agitation is dangerous: Mufti Saeed
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayed
has cautioned that the threat of an agitation by Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) veteran L K Advani against Article 370 amounted to
reversal of gains made on the Kashmir issue and Indo-Pak rela-
tionship since former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
announced ceasefire from Srinagar and extended its hand of
friendship to Pakistan.
If anything the party must launch a campaign for speeding up
the process initiated by Vajpayee rather than agitating against
Article 370 of the Constitution, said the PDP patron while address-
ing a public meeting in south Kashmirs Pulwama, July 11. Mufti
said in its bid to score political points, the party seems to have for-
gotten its role in trying to find an amicable solution to the Kashmir
problem. He cautioned the party against undoing the process of
reconciliation, resolution and Indo-Pak amity initiated by its NDA
government under Vajpayee.
Mufti recalled when he invited Vajpayee to Srinagar in 2003,
armies of both countries were in combat position in the wake of the
Parliament attack and Kargil conflict but Vajpayee saw a window of
opportunity and grabbed it to dismantle walls of hatred in South
Asia. Advanis stance is an antithesis of Vajpayees call for
insaniyat ke dayire mein and even his own initiative to hold direct
talks with separatists that was the first contact of its kind at that
level. He further recalled how NDA government announced the
first ceasefire with militants even as the state government of its ally,
National Conference had openly defied it. The PDP patron said
though UPAgovernment during its first tenure followed the initiative
and took things to the next level the process seems to be getting
trapped in partisan politics again. If Advani must agitate it should
be for carrying forward that process with speed and substance,
rather than following the same zero sum game that has led us
nowhere, he said.
Mufti said resolution of the Kashmir problem with its internal
and external dimensions in mind is inescapable. It is a matter of
life and death for us, for the rest of the country it is a matter of
restoring prestige. It is no source of pride for the country that
Jammu and Kashmir which strengthened its secular credentials
and multicultural ethos should be writhing in pain, he said, while
calling for a national consensus for a just and lasting solution.
Doctors strike hits services
Patient care at valleys premier and lone tertiary care hospital,
Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura was
severely hit for five-days owing to doctors strike following
alleged thrashing of their colleagues by hospital security guards
after an altercation over car-parking.
Complete chaos prevailed in the hospital. Attendants
claimed more than 20 people including children lost their lives
during the strike period (July 14 - 19).
Civil Society Forum Kashmir July 19 urged doctors, man-
agement and police to sort out their issues in the public interest.
Umar Tramboo, general secretary of the Forum, in a statement
said patient care has borne the brunt of the strike and the mass-
es have been left in the lurch.
The Forum said that the strike-culture should be abolished
by doctors as there are other ways of solving problems that
dont hamper patient care. Security setup in all major hospitals
lacks proper training on dealing with patients and they should
be sensitized about it.
Meanwhile, a day after the State Human Rights Commission
sought a report from the hospital about deaths since January 2011
to May 2012; the latter on July 19 said that the death rate is lower
than many other premier institutions in the country.
Referring to a complaint in which Sanjay Saraf had alleged that
2903 deaths took place in the institute during the period, Director
SKIMS Dr Showkat Zargar shared out of 66,716 admissions, 63700
were discharged and 3008 died.
SKIMS is the main tertiary-care-cum-referral hospital for the
state and all critical and sick patients from various areas of the state
get referred to the hospital which results in a patient population with
high morbidity and mortality, said the director, adding that response
was being prepared to be furnished in the Commission.

THE MILLI GAZETTE
First English Newspaper of Indian Muslims. Telling the Muslim side of the story fortnight after fortnight since January 2000
Kashmir is a problem between India and Pakistan: Omar
PANKAJ MISHRA
In July 1995, an Islamic fundamentalist group called Al Faran kid-
napped six foreign tourists, including two Americans, in Kashmir.
For a few weeks, the worlds attention was fixed on the Himalayan
valley as the allegedly Pakistan-backed militants negotiated with
Indian security officials and foreign diplomats. Eventually, one of
the Americans escaped. Another hostage, a Norwegian, was
beheaded. The other four were never found.
The Meadow: Kashmir 1995 Where the Terror Began, a
staggeringly well-researched new book by two respected journal-
ists, Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark, concludes that the
hostages were killed by local mercenaries funded and controlled
by Indian army and intelligence. The authors argue that the drawn-
out negotiation, during which Indian intelligence allegedly knew the
hostages whereabouts, was a charade, part of Indias larger effort
to portray Pakistan as a sponsor of Islamist terror, thereby delegit-
imizing the Kashmiri struggle for freedom.
Certainly, India today no longer needs to highlight the role of
the Pakistani army and intelligence in sponsoring extremist
groups. It has also succeeded in shifting international attention
away from the appalling facts of its counter-insurgency operations
in Kashmir tens of thousands killed, and innumerable many tor-
tured, mutilated and orphaned. The tallying in 2009 of 2,700
unmarked graves containing the remains of people (often buried in
groups) killed by security forces barely provoked any comment in
the international media, let alone expressions of concern by
Western leaders.
Killers in Khaki: But Indias diplomatic and public relations suc-
cess has been achieved at considerable costs: the rise of militaris-
tic nationalism, the assault on civil liberties, and a dangerously
enhanced role in politics for men in uniform.
Most of the million-plus men and women in the Indian military
still manifest what Shashi Tharoor once described as increasing-
ly rare qualities in India: high standards of performance, honesty,
hard work, self-sacrifice, incorruptibility, respect for tradition, disci-
pline, team spirit. As a child, I had myself wanted, like many
Indians of my generation and class, to acquire the virtuous glow of
an army officers uniform, and even attended a military school.
It was therefore shocking and demoralizing to encounter, dur-
ing a visit to Kashmir in 2000, accounts of extrajudicial killings and
torture and rape by Indian soldiers -- stories that, though common-
place in Kashmir, were largely kept hidden from the Indian public
by a patriotic media. But to those who reported from Kashmir in the
past decade and a half as opposed to the many more who were
content to disseminate briefings from Indian army and intelligence
officials The Meadow presents a disturbingly familiar picture.
I was there when, during Bill Clintons visit to South Asia in
March 2000, Indian army officers allegedly kidnapped and killed
five Kashmiri villagers and presented their mutilated corpses to the
international news media as the Pakistani killers of the 35 Sikhs
who had been murdered by unidentified gunmen just hours before
Clintons scheduled arrival in India. It has taken 12 years for Indias
legal system even to acknowledge this well-documented atrocity:
Last week, the Supreme Court gingerly asked the army how it
wishes to prosecute the officers suspected of the cold-blooded
murder (by civil court or court martial).
Since 2000, the number of armed militants has steadily
decreased in Kashmir. But the human rights situation has not
improved. Under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in effect in
Kashmir and the northeastern states (where the Indian army was
first deployed in counter-insurgency), soldiers can kill on the basis
of mere suspicion while continuing to enjoy near-total legal immu-
nity.
Regime of Impunity: The result is a regime of impunity. A coali-
tion of Indian human rights groups in a report to the United Nations
this year documented 789 extrajudicial killings in the northeastern
state of Manipur alone between 2007 and 2010. In recent years,
the army has also been dragged into Operation Green Hunt, the
Indian states extraordinarily big, armed offensive against Maoist
insurgents in central India.
The widened powers of the military against the new electron-
ic medias background chorus of hyperna-
tionalism have given army officers a public
role they never had. Breaking with old proto-
cols, the previous army chief openly speculated about a limited
war under a nuclear overhang with Pakistan.
It is also not at all clear if there is any proper governmental
oversight of the Indian intelligence agencies, which, mimicking the
doomed Pakistani quest for strategic depth, have been trying out
potentially useful proxies in Pakistans Balochistan province as
well as Afghanistan. These adventurist spies and the perennially
belligerent men in uniform now seem to constitute as formidable a
lobby against peace between India and Pakistan as the Islamic
zealots on the other side of the border. Backed by Hindu national-
ist leaders, they even dare to overrule elected politicians such as
Omar Abdullah, Kashmirs chief minister, who has been pleading
in vain for a withdrawal of the much-despised special powers act.
Their jingoism, echoed by hawkish think tanks and websites
(Indias own military-intellectual complex), goes necessarily
together with dubious arms purchases. India is now the worlds
biggest arms market; a series of scandals have not stopped
spending sprees that, as the recent outbursts of the outgoing army
chief reveal, do little to prepare India for any conceivable war.
No Banana Republic Things are about to get worse. The next
Indian army chief comes into office later this month, trailed by alle-
gations of his involvement in an extrajudicial killing in Kashmir. He
was also in charge of Indian peacekeeping soldiers accused in
2008 of sexual misconduct in the Congo.
The Indian army remains firmly under civilian control. India is
very far from degenerating into, as an exasperated Ratan Tata
feared last year, a banana republic. Yet there are plenty of rea-
sons for alarm and dismay over a process that, starting in obscure
battles in the northeastern states in the 1960s, was accelerated
during the two previous decades in the valley of Kashmir.
Levy and Scott-Clarks book mainly excavates one of the
many murky incidents of the 1990s. But its revised draft of history
also sheds light on the present -- how a democratic states addic-
tion to colonial-style dirty wars has damaged not so much the
Kashmiri cause of freedom as Indias frail democracy and one of
its last uncompromised institutions. (bloomberg.com)

Pathribal trial will be fair: Army
Assuring fair trial in Pathribal fake encounter case in which seven
people were killed in an alleged staged shootout 12 years ago, Lt
General Om Prakash, GOC 15 Corps has said that proceedings
against its officers would be carried out fairly and those found
guilty would be given exemplary punishment.
Where the trial would be carried out, hasnt yet been decided. It
has to be decided by Judge Advocate General (JAG) of Army,
said GOC, while interacting with the media at the headquarters of
15 Corps, July 17.
He added Army carries out trial on fast track basis in com-
parison to civil courts. Our punishments are always harsh. Trial
would be carried out fairly and those found involved would be
given exemplary punishment. Army on June 29 decided to take
over investigations and try its officers in the case. It filed an appli-
cation before Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar requesting that
the case be handed over so that the accused are tried under the
Army Act.
Pertinently, the Apex Court had asked the Army in May to
decide whether its personnel should be tried by court-martial pro-
ceedings or by regular criminal courts. CBI had moved an appli-
cation for vacating the stay granted by the Supreme Court on the
trial relating to the killing of seven persons allegedly by the Army
in retaliation to killing of 36 civilians by militants at
Chattisinghpora in 2000.
GOC informed that about 280-300 militants are active in the
valley, but there was a decline in militancy. North Kashmir is
affected the most as infiltration takes place from that area and the
dense forests help them to survive.

ANALYSIS
O
f late, some attention has been paid to bias
Muslims, including celebrities, suffer on reli-
gious grounds. Yes, this is true. But would it be
fair to analyze this issue from only a subjective
angle conveying the impression that only Muslims in
India are affected by such discrimination? Statistically
speaking, Muslims constitute less than 14 per cent of the
countrys population. If each Muslim was subject to
extreme atrocities on religious grounds, would India have
remained home to the second largest population of
Muslims in the world? No. In the same vein, if emperors
who ruled India during the medieval period were really
fundamentalist and communal on religious grounds, as
projected by some right-wing elements, Muslims would-
nt have remained a minority in the country.
True, there prevails a bias, but it would be unfair to
assume that all Muslims are affected by this and that all
non-Muslims hold a similar attitude against them. If this
was really the hard truth, most probably no Indian Muslim
would have dared to raise voice on it. And this is just a
part of the issue. Where bias, discrimination and preju-
dice are concerned, Muslims are not the only ones who
face this. Within all religious communities, including
Hindus and Muslims, certain ethnic barriers prevail. What
else explains continuation of reservation at various lev-
els in government jobs and educational institutions, pri-
mary beneficiaries of which are Scheduled Castes,
Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
Let us not close our eyes to the hard fact that segre-
gation along religion, caste and class lines is still visible
in most parts of the country. Honour killings, a symbol-
ic condemnation of inter-caste marriages within Hindu
community and also of inter-religion marriages, have
started hitting headlines only recently. These are just one
of the many instances of strong, deep-rooted prejudices
and bias restricting interaction among members of differ-
ent castes. Rural India still stands witness to there being
strong, unwritten rules regarding which well is reserved
for which community. In village classrooms, it isnt sur-
prising to find students of different castes being seated
separately. Even residential areas in rural as well as
urban slum areas and JJ colonies stand marked by which
community lives where.
These points have been deliberately raised here to
draw attention to the hard fact that bias prevails in India,
but not only against Muslims. Certainly, there are certain
issues where Muslims are primarily targeted. These
include their being easily branded as terrorists, killed in
fake encounters, arrested for no fault of theirs and so
forth. The fault herein lies in law & order system, con-
cerned authorities and degree to which these can bend or
abuse rules, all for the sake of either a promotion or
under some political pressure or due to communal mind-
set.
But where bias on issues such as securing residence
is concerned, Muslims are not the only sufferers. Even in
the capital city, as mentioned earlier, residential demarca-
tion prevails even in slum areas and JJ colonies. It isnt
surprising to find certain lanes occupied only by sweep-
ers, largely Hindus and so forth. Think again, why did
Congress legislator Rahul Gandhi made the effort, during
his campaign, to spend some time at a Dalits residence
in Uttar Pradesh. Of course, this may be viewed as noth-
ing else but sheer publicity stunt as part of his electoral
campaign. But by taking this step, he conveyed the mes-
sage that he had no hang-ups about visiting Dalits, a
community that still suffers discrimination from higher
caste Hindus.
B
esides, this problem is not confined to only Hindus as
caste factor has affected Indian Muslims too. In cer-
tain Muslim-dominated areas, it isnt difficult to find
localities, with different classes, that is Syeds, Sheikhs,
Pathans and others having marked out separate places
for themselves. In this context, how can increasing barri-
ers, politically as well as socially, between Shias and
Sunnis be missed? Likewise, how can anti-non-Maratha
frenzy incited sometime back in Maharashtra be forgot-
ten? The campaign targeted non-Marathas, irrespective
of their religion, class and caste linkages. And this brings
to light the point that even Delhi is marked by certain
colonies known for only Bengali residents, some for
Punjabi, a few for Muslims and so forth.
It may also be noted, the tendency not to easily rent
houses to Muslims prevails among conservative Hindus,
basically due to cultural differences. The latter are
against renting house to a non-vegetarian and also eating
or drinking water in the house of a non-vegetarian, out of
the cultural fear of their being polluted on ground of their
being strict vegetarians. Fear of being polluted also
prevents them from renting their house to members of
their own religious community, belonging to castes which
are known to be non-vegetarian.
There is nothing wrong in taking note of bias Muslims
face in India. But it is equally imperative to pay attention
to its nature and whether they are only ones who face
this. Ignoring this aspect amounts to studying the issue
partially, that is adopting a biased approach towards it!

5. Acting on this tip, the Gujarat Police found out that one
Sajid Mansuri was living in that house on rent. The Gujarat Police
had Mansuris number. While tracing call records, the Gujarat
Police stumbled on the fact that a call was made from an east-
ern Uttar Pradesh person from Mumbai to Sajids phone, just
before the Ahmedabad blasts. Then that eastern Uttar Pradesh
person called Atifs number in Delhi.
6. Notably, Gujarat Police does not mention the role of
Usmani while the Mumbai Police knows nothing about Sajid
Mansuri. Yet, a third agency the Delhi Police invents these
connections. A story is constructed as to how Afzal Usmani first
stole the cars from Mumbai, brought them over to Bharuch, from
where they were transported to Ahmedabad and used in the
blasts.
7. Now, cases against alleged IM operatives are registered
in Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. But
in the chargesheet submitted by various agencies in their respec-
tive courts, the role played by different actors do not tally. Most of
the chargesheets are fudged and not available. Yet, even a curso-
ry look shows that in the same case, Sajid Mansuri is playing a dif-
ferent role in Mumbai Police files, a different one in Gujarat Police
charges, and a very different one in Delhi Police records!
8. But the best part has yet to come. Officially, both Mumbai
and Gujarat Police had alerted the IB about Atif Ameen. Days
before the Batla House encounter, the IB was keeping Atifs phone
under surveillance! A post-Batla House encounter article, pub-
lished in The Hindu, states that the IB did not arrest Atif as his
phone might have led the agencies to the Bhatkals, who were
supposed to be the main guys behind the 2008 blasts.
9. It is important that the Hindu article
(http://www.hindu.com/2008/10/10/stories/2008101053621100.ht
m), written actually in defence of the Delhi Police, betrays the pos-
sibility that Atif could have been arrested. You do not kill a man
who is already under your surveillance. You keep him alive so that
he leads you to the bigger fish.
10. The Hindu article also suggests that Mohan Chandra
Sharma and other Delhi Police cops went to Batla House merely
to enquire about Atif. They received a burst of fire that hit Mohan
Chandra Sharma, after which they fired in return and killed Atif
and Sajid.
11. But the question is that if the Mumbai and Gujarat Police
got Atifs name respectively from Usmani and Mansuri, what was
Delhi Polices source?
12. Maybe the IB let Delhi Police in-but officially the IB was
keeping Atif not only alive but kicking to net the bigger catch.
Now the really uncomfortable part starts:
1. Was IB in agreement or was it even informed - about
Delhi Polices attempt to storm the Batla House building?
2. Mumbai, Gujarat, Delhi and other state agencies need not
necessarily share information. The IB too possesses the right to
withhold or share its information. Here, however, it is obvious that
the Delhi Police acted on its own more importantly, other state
and central agencies were not in the loop. What was a Mumbai
Police team doing in the same area on the same day? Looking for
Bhatkals? Then why was there no coordination between Delhi and
Mumbai Police? The IB and Mumbai Police still believe that arrest-
ing Atif would have been a better option.
3. But what if the Delhi Police claim that it had gone only to
enquire and the encounter was an accident? Ha! Ha! The Delhi
Police do not claim thus. On the contrary, they still take the credit
of what is described as a full-fledged encounter in which both
sides were armed.
Interestingly, since the chain linking Usmani, Sajid Mansuri
and Atif is different in different chargesheets of different state
Police forces, isnt it logical to merge the different versions and
create a proper, professional, scientific file that makes sense? But,
of course, how can that happen? Different states are ruled by dif-
ferent governments. Naquee Ahmed, the Delhi Police informer, is
arrested by the Mahrashtra ATS as a terrorist. Qateel Siddiqui, a
man wanted by IB and West Bengal Police in a fake currency
case, is arrested by the Delhi Police and declared a terrorist. The
Mumbai Police take his custody for interrogation. He is found dead
-- killed by so-called Hindu criminals in the maximum security,
anda cell of Punes Yerwada Jail. Then the Delhi Police brings
Zabihuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal - an IB informer - over from
Saudi Arabia - declaring him a terrorist.
It would require a full enquiry to fill in the horrendous gaps and
trace the messy, convoluted trail of blood, inefficiency and slaugh-
ter left behind by the devilish dance of security agencies. But
some issues are clear:
1. The Mahrashtra Police has a role to play - and a vested
interest - in Qateel Siddiquis murder in Pune. Qateel after all was
a terrorist arrested by the Delhi Police. The credit for revela-
tions made by him would have gone to the Delhi Police.
2. Naquee Ahmed was arrested by the Maharashtra Police for
the same reason - settling scores with the Delhi Police.
3. Abu Jundals extradition too is linked to the turf wars
between various agencies.
4. Hundreds of Muslim youth are languishing in jails in the
name of anti-terror operations for being IM members. The situa-
tion has become so desperate that as soon as one state agency
catches a Muslim youth, the other state agency immediately
wants his custody. Then the third state agency starts demanding
its pound of flesh. It seems that state Police agencies are not con-
fident about the suspects they have chargesheeted. Are they
nervous that there is no evidence against youths lodged in Delhi,
Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karntaka
jails? So all state agencies clamour for custody as soon as one
of them nets a catch?
5. There is big money involved in keeping the various state
level ATSs, Special Cells and the Crime Branches. These forces
are allowed to spend billions - including buying sophisticated
weaponry - and are not accountable to anyone.
6. Anti-Muslim, communal biases seem to guide the agencies.
But even if we set aside the communal angle for a moment,
MONEY also can function as a major motivator for state and cen-
tral actors to implicate innocents and start a game which has no
end.
7. It is an open secret that Mossad, the infamous, dirty agency
of Israel, interrogates Muslim prisoners inside Indian jails, espe-
cially in Mumbai and Delhi.
8. Mossad functionaries have been found inside Military
Intelligence (MI) zones in Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir. The
pathetic manner in which Colonel Raj Kumar Purohit, leader of the
Hindutva terror brigade and an accused in the 2008 Malegaon
blasts, was sought to be shielded recently by forces inside the
Indian military, is a stern reminder of the fact that foreign agencies
might have infiltrated our military as well.
For personal gains, and to feed the anti-Muslim phobia of
Israel and the US, Indian security agencies are putting Indias
security and sovereignty at risk. If there is home-grown terrorism
in India, it is not being perpetrated by the IM or some imagined
Muslim terrorist group. The IB, Military Intelligence and various
state agencies represent the real hub of home-grown terror. My
charge is that terror plots, in which innocent Indians lose their
lives, are planned inside their offices, in collusion with Mossad-
type security forces. they need to be exposed and punished.
Everything again boils down to Urdu. There is a complete
lack of trust between victims and Indian security forces. The latter
have become a law unto themselves. Indians can only taunt them
with Ghalibs couplet:
Tere waade par jiye hum to aye jaan jhoot jaana
To say that I lived on your promises [of national security] is to
make my life a lie
Ki khushi se mar na jaate agar aitebaar hota
Would I not have died of happiness if you were really trustworthy?

Let us not close our eyes to the hard
fact that segregation along religion, caste
and class lines is still visible in most parts
of the country. Honour killings, a symbolic
condemnation of inter-caste marriages with-
in Hindu community and also of inter-reli-
gion marriages, have started hitting head-
lines only recently. These are just one of the
many instances of strong, deep-rooted prej-
udices and bias restricting interaction
among members of different castes.

SAEED KHAN
Ahmedabad: While Gujarati businessmen
donated generously for Mahatma Gandhis non-
violent freedom struggle, there were some who
helped Netaji Subhas Chandra Boses Indian
National Army.
A businessman from Dhoraji town
ofSaurashtra, Memon Abdul Habeeb Yusuf
Marfani, donated almost his entire fortune of
Rs 1 crore to the Indian National Army, a prince-
ly sum in those days.
The Memon family was settled in Rangoon.
On July 9, 1944, when Netaji founded INA in
Rangoon, Marfani was the first to come forward
to contribute financially to the Azad Hind Bank.
Soon, the coffer swelled with contributions from
Indian expats in Rangoon and Singapore.
Historian Yunus Chitalwala says Marfani
was among the first donors and Netaji
expressed his gratitude by awarding him a
Sevak-e-Hind medal. He was the first recipient
of this award.
Marfanis gesture has been documented in
various history books. Historian Raj Mal
Kasliwal in his book Netaji, Azad Hind Fauz and
After says, One Muslim Burmese business
magnate of Rangoon donated a crore worth of
cash and jewellery and offered his services to
the Independence movement. After he emptied
a plate full of jewellery and placed a bundle of
title deeds before Bose, the leader praised the
gesture saying, Brothers! I am very happy
today that people have started realizing
their duties... People are ready to sacrifice
everything. What Habeeb sheth has done
is commendable and those who emulate
him in serving the homeland are really
praiseworthy.
Marfani is not the only Gujarati Muslim
to have contributed to INA. Surats Ghulam
Husein Mushtaq Randeri was the recruiting
officer for the army. During the recent cele-
bration of Boses birth centenary, Marfanis
grandson Yacoob Habeeb was felicitated
in New Delhi for his ancestors action.
However, these references were missing
from chief minister Narendra Modis
speech on the occasion last week, when
he donned the INA cap and tried hard to
establish the Gujarat connection with
Bose. (articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com,

SPECIAL REPORTS
The Milli Gazette, 1-15 August 2012 13
BY OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi: Amjad Alqasis, an international
human rights law expert and Rev. Dr Jamal
Khader, Palestinian Biblical scholar, spoke at
conferences in both Chennai and Delhi on simi-
larities between Zionism and Hindutva. They
participated in a national consultation in Delhi
during 17-18 July on the struggle of the
Palestinian people for statehood and found sim-
ilarities between the ideologies of Hindutva and
Zionism which they said were promoting division
and suspicion of the other. Hindutva and
Zionism are two ideologies that are strikingly
similar in content and orientation. They have
grown into forms of nationalism that are intoler-
ant of pluralism and seek exclusivist identities
for their followers, concluded the participants of
the conference in New Delhi. The event saw
participants from the Church, Parliament, rights
groups and civil society.
In his inaugural address, Mani Shankar
Aiyer, Member of Parliament and former Union
minister, presented delegates with multiple chal-
lenges that Indians must respond to. In his
keynote address, Aiyer said that establishing
diplomatic relations with Israel was a mistake at
par with the destruction of the Babri Masjid and
both were committed by the same prime minis-
ter. He said relations have progressed so much
that Israel today is the largest supplier of non-
essential goods [read arms] to India. Describing
Oslo accords as the beginning of a panchayati
raj for Gaza and West Bank, he said that there
is no room for a two-state solution because
Israel will never allow a Palestinian state.
The conference was organised by Indian
Solidarity Ecumenical Network - Palestine
(ISEN) which is a new group of several Christian
organisations in India. An ISEN delegation visit-
ed Palestine last year. A member of the delega-
tion, Samuel Jayakumar who moderated one of
the sessions, said that life in Palestine is like a
prison. Life there is more pathetic than the caste
system in India, he said.
The conference had two participants from
Palestine, human rights activist Amjad Al-Qasis
and Father Jamal Khader, both Christians.
Al-Qasis explained in detail the racist Israeli
society which has two sets of laws, one for the
Jews and the other for the Palestinian Arabs
who include both Muslims and Christians. The
legal and constitutional framework has been
meticulously laid down with a view to favour
Jews and discriminate against Arabs.
Palestinians under Israeli occupation have been
divided into five categories: Palestinians living in
Israel, living in Jerusalem, living in West Bank,
living in Gaza and those living in diaspora
(refugees). All the five have different rules. If a
Palestinian of one category falls in love with a
Palestinian of another category, he/she cannot
live with him/her in Israel. The Israeli society is
so racist that Israels interior minister said two
months ago that Israel is the country of whites
only. Israels Law of Return allows any Jew from
anywhere in the world to return to Israel as of
right while Palestinians made refugees by Israel
cannot dream to return to their homes and
lands. Israeli Nationality Law desprives non-
Jews of equality in Israel while Political Parties
Law allows only pro-Israel parties to get regis-
tered and function. Jewish National Fund
actively discriminates against Arabs and works
for all Jews, even those who do not live in
Israel. Al-Qasis said that a strong Jewish com-
munity flourished in the Arab world for close to
two thousand years but Zionists have extin-
guished this. He said that in Israel, both Left
and Right are zionist. Even the Israeli
Communist Party is zionist. Non-zionist Jews
are less than one percent of the Jewish popula-
tion of Israel, he said.
Father Jamal Khader explained in detail the
Christian Zionism, a movement which started
long before the emergence of Jewish Zionism.
Its aim is to help collect all Jews inside Palestine
as a precondition for the second coming of
Jesus who will convert Jews to Christianity. In
essece, Christian Zionism is anti-Jewish but it
suits both at present andthey to cooperate with
each other because Israel benefits
from the influence and resources of
Christian movements supporting it in
the US and Europe. Christian zionists
in the US say that Israeli interests are
identicial to that of the US. To make
their case, Christian zionists pick
some sections of the Bible and neg-
lect the rest which do not support
Jews or Judaism. He said, these
groups have supermarket, i.e., pick-
n-choose, theology -- they choose and
pick some out of context texts of the
Bible in order to support their case.
The apartheid system in South Africa
too was based on a selective reading
of the Bible, he said, adding that these people
ignore the whole history between 3000 years
and now. Their plan is: return of the Jews to
Palestine; establishment of the Jewish
State/Third Temple; end of time and return of
Jesus Christ to this world. And when this had
happened Jews will be annihilated by Jesus. As
such, it is an anti-Jewish movement and Jews
know it, Father Khader said adding that Jews go
along with this as they need current political and
material support for Israel. He said that Jews
know that Christians are their worst enemies
and that their best friends used to be Muslims,
especially in Muslim Spain. Father Khader said
that Christian Zionists have now started saying
that we should not say that Jews killed Jesus
because this belief led to the Holocaust. He cau-
tioned that these ideas are slowly percolating
into mainstream Churches, which is dangerous.
Participants expressed their displeasure at
the Indian government and corporate sectors
growing relations with Israel while the zionist
country is in constant violation of international
law and pays no heed to UN resolutions pertain-
ing to ending the 45 year occupation of
Palestine. Speakers included Prof Achin Vanaik,
Prof. Shamsul Islam, Fr Maverick Fernandes
and Dr Ram Puniyani.
The consultation demanded an end to
Israeli occupation based on UN resolutions and
international law. It also decided to hold a
nation-wide campaign for boycott, divestment
and sanctions (BSD) against Israel.

How communal forces entrap Muslims
Hyderabad: A large number of people from Rajasthan, UP, Bihar and Gujarat are heading
towards this city to run their businesses. The ratio is increasing on an alarming rate. New
festivals and processions are coming up in the city because of these non-locals.
A new phenomenon is a certain calendar which hangs on the wall of various shops at
Begum Bazar, mostly owned by Gujaratis. The calendar has a photo of a famous swami
named Asaram Babu. More surprisingly is that the picture shows some Muslim men and
women sitting in front of the swami with great respect. When enquired about the swami the
shop owner said that he is bhagwan. No one returns empty-handed from him and your
Muslims also come to him.
In another such example, a barber near Masjid Miyan Mashak has shut down his busi-
ness and has become a faith-healer. Actually his father was a bonal and used to become
potraj on every bonal festival. This barber and his son do faith healing and unfortunately
Muslims too come to his shop located at a footpath. He gives his clients a thread and some
lemons, besides this he cuts a lock of his clients hair and tells that he would ward off all
the problems by doing a particular puja on it for which he collects 1100 rupees.
Another person named Chandu heals young children by giving bath to them. He
charges 30 to 50 rupees for giving each healing bath to the children. Another swami has
set up his faith healing business near Himayat Sagar. People go to him to promote their
businesses.
The sad part of the story is that there is a considerable number of Muslims who go to
such fake babas for cure. When the notorious witch craft Nagin Bhabi was arrested last
month, a large number of locals staged dharna for giving strict punishment to her. A chief
officer asked them why dont you stop people going to her? He was right. We should
inform Muslims what is right and what is wrong. (Siasat news)

HC notice to cleric on holy hair claim
A prominent section of Keralas Sunni Muslims which says it has
the holy hair of Prophet Mohammed - and claims to be building
Indias biggest mosque to preserve it - has been challenged in
court over the authenticity of the relic. Acting on a petition, Kerala
high court issued notices to Sunni Jamiyathul Ulema general sec-
retary Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliar and the state govern-
ment on July 7 and sought their replies within a month. Petitioner
UC Abu contended the Musaliar was exploiting the sentiments of
Muslims by making false claims that the hair he had collected
from Saudi Arabia was a relic of the Prophet. According to Abu,
the Musaliar has been collecting large sums of money to build the
mosque at Kozhikode in northern Kerala to preserve the hair. He
had appealed to the court to direct the state government to con-
duct a probe into the matter. Work on the mosque, spread across
12 acres, began in January and is expected to be completed in
two years. The mosque is estimated to cost Rs. 40 crore and will
apparently accommodate 25,000 devotees during prayer time.
The complex will have a museum and a library. Some Muslim
groups including Jamaat-e-Islami and Mujahid factions have
challenged the Musaliar to prove the veracity of his claim by put-
ting his relic through a fire test, saying if the hair is the Prophets,
it will overcome the fury of the fire. The Musaliar, however, has
rejected calls for putting the hair through fire, saying it will not be
proper to subject such a precious relic to tests. The Hazratbal
Shrine in Kashmir has a relic believed by the devout to be the holy
hair of the Prophet.
Christians Attacked in Karnataka
On 6 July in Ramagundahally, Channagiri, Davanagere, alleged
Hindu extremists forcefully entered into a house church, accused
the Christians of forceful conversion and beat them up until four
believers fell unconscious. According to our correspondent, Rev
Noel Kotian, the extremists barged into a prayer meeting, verbal-
ly abused the Christians and beat them up claiming that the
church was involved in fraudulent and forceful conversion. They
also tore up all the Bibles and other Christian tracts lying in the
church and then phoned the Basappakatte police station. The
police immediately came to the spot and took Pastor Mounesh to
the police station for further inquiry.
After area Christian leaders intervention, the pastor was
released at about 12:30 a. m. However, the release of Pastor
Mounesh infuriated the extremists and at about 2:30 p. m. the
next day, a dozen extremists forcefully entered the prayer service
and beat up Pastor Monesh and the church members. Believers
identified only as Hosuramma, Bhagyamma, Gurumoorthy,
Ranganatha became unconscious from the beating and they
received treatment in the district Govt hospital.
In a similar incident, about 20 Hindu extremists allegedly from
the Bajrang Dal barged into the church at about 11 am and forced
the Christians to stop their worship service on July 1 in
Vijayapura, Chitradurga. The extremists verbally abused Pastor
Kantharaj Hanumanthappa and the church members, alleging
that they are involved in forcibly and fraudulently converting
Hindus to Christianity. Pastor Hanumanthappa stopped the
prayer service and then along with a few believers went to the
Burmasagar Police Station and lodged a complaint against the
attackers. Police officers visited the spot and reached a compro-
mise between the two parties. They warned the extremists not to
disturb the Christians in future and also advised the Christians not
to indulge in forceful conversion or force anyone to attend their
prayer services.
Delhi Waqf Board's income increasing
New Delhi: Delhi Waqf Board, like Waqf Boards of many other
states, is faced with the problem of lesser income and greater
expenses. Now it has started taking certain steps for increasing
its income which is paying dividend. First step in this direction is
that at the time of change of tenancy it has decided to charge rent
at the market rate which has substantially added to its income.
Recently, with increased rent the Board has received Rs. 64 lakh
as donations from some tenants. Six shops which were earlier
paying Rs. 3000 only (per month) are now made to pay approxi-
mately Rs. 30,000. According to news available from internal
sources, the Board was facing great difficulties because of mea-
gre rents from tenants. Though it had many ambitious and long
term plans, these could not be taken up because of small income.
In the formal meeting of the Board that was held in its office
on 16 June which was chaired by Chaudhary Mateen Ahmad and
attended, among others, by Maulana Ejaz Arshad, former CEO
Azimul Haq, Maulana Qasim, Raza Mehdi and new CEO Ehsan
Abid, some important decisions were taken. One of them was that
the Board decided to increase the salaries of Muazzins of
mosques under the Board by Rs. 1000 monthly. This increase is
to be with retrospective effect i.e. from 1 April 2012. Another deci-
sion was that the salaries of theology teachers of schools affiliat-
ed to the Board will be increased by Rs. 2000 per month. (It was
however not specified if this increase will
be from the current month or with retro-
spective effect). It may also be stated in
this connection that in its earlier meeting
the Board had decided to increase the
salaries of Masjid Imams by Rs. 1000 (per
month). Delhi Waqf Boards new website
is ready and will become operational soon.
Computerisation of Waqf Board records is
in progress and will be finalised soon and
will be available on its website. As regards
reconstruction of the demolished Masjid
Noor of Jungpura, Boards new CEO
Ehsan Abid told Board members that
approval for the land allotted by DDA for
rebuilding of this Masjid will be accorded
soon.

Search of CEO of Ajmer Sharif Dargah
New Delhi: Union ministry for minorities affairs has restarted the
entire process of selection and appointment of Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) of Khwaja Moinuddin Chistis Dargah at Ajmer. It
may be stated that the previous CEO, Ahmad Raza after comple-
tion of his term had resigned in February 2011 and ever since
then this post is lying vacant and in the absence of the CEO, the
secretary in the ministry of minorities affairs Muhammad Afzal is
working as interim CEO. The ministry had no doubt appointed a
defence ministry official Rashid Ansari as the CEO who was
asked to take over this post by 20 June but because of some per-
sonal reasons he had expressed his inability to hold this post.
After his refusal, government (minority affairs ministry) has start-
ed the whole process of selection and appointment of a new CEO
anew and for this purpose it has started inviting applications.
Meanwhile, the 5-year term of the existing Ajmer Sharif Dargah
Committee is also coming to an end on 24 August. This commit-
tee consists of nine members which governs the affairs of the
Dargah and the CEO works under this committee. An official of
the minorities affairs ministry said that normally it takes about two
months for the selection of the CEO and the ministry is trying to
select a suitable person as CEO. Ajmer Dargahs Diwan Syed
Zainul Abdin Ali Khan criticised the governments go-slow policy
in this matter, saying he cant understand why the government
takes two months in selection / appointment of the CEO. It may
be stated that the CEOs role is important in many respects. The
person appointed by the CEO is authorised to collect and main-
tain the offerings / donations given by the devotees to the Dargah.
Again, it is he alongwith Dargah Committee who arranges the
annual urs of the saint. There are more than 300 properties asso-
ciated with the Dargah. Annual income from these properties and
offerings / donations etc. is about Rs. 225 crores. Recently,
Dargah Management Committee was accused of irregularities in
the management and income of the Dargah. In view of these
accusations and irregularities, one of the committee members M.
M. Tarmeez in a letter to the ministry had demanded dissolution
of the committee.
New Delhi: Muslims in Delhi normally take recourse to courts set
up by governments for the settlement of their Sharaee problems
because the number of Sharaee committees or Darul Qazas is
very small. In view of difficulties faced by Muslims in this respect,
All India Muslim Personal Law Board is thinking of setting up
many more Darul Qazas in the national capital, Delhi. According
to a senior member of this Board, in view of the necessity and
importance of Darul Qazas, planning is already in progress for
setting up of a network of such Darul Qazas in the long run but
for the time being preparations are going on for building one
Darul Qaza in the N.C.R. Jamiatul Ulamas department of
Amarat-e Sharaiyya has decided to set up many Sharaee depart-
ments or Darul Qazas in the capital.
At present there are only some such institutions which can
be counted on ones finger tips, including the one functioning in
Okhla under Muslim Personal Law Board. Another is Darul Qaza
in Madrasa Baitul Uloom in Jafarabad (East Delhi). The third one
is Sharaiyya department in Madrasa Baabul Uloom functioning
under Jamiatul Ulama. According to Maulana Ghayoor of
Jamiatul Ulama the number of Sharaee departments in Delhi is
hardly four which Muslims can approach for the settlement of
their family problems. According to Muhammad Tariq who is a
lawyer and has carried out research on Sharaee institutions in
Delhi, says that Muslims should take some of their family dis-
putes like marriage, divorce, heredity and will, maintenance
allowance but they do not find it possible because these institu-
tions generally do not have basic facilities, staff and they lack
transparency and hence common Muslims do not want to
approach these institutions.
Delhi states Jamiatul Ulama chief, Mufti Zafaruddin, who
runs a Sharaee department in East Delhi says that Jamiat has
made some progress in this respect and has also decided to
expand and set up more of such institutions. He said that some
Sharaee departments will be set up in Delhi where Muslims will
be able to get their disputes settled. Supervisor and incharge of
Jamiatul Ulamas department of Amarat-e Sharaiyya, Maulana
Moizuddin said that at present Jamiat is running more than 200
Sharaee departments in the whole of India but in Delhi only one
Sharaee department is working. It may be stated that in states
like Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Orissa Darul Qazas are work-
ing successfully. Amarat Sharaiyya of Patna is very successfully
running the Darul Qaza system and if in Delhi also this system is
run on the same lines, Muslims will benefit to a great extent for
the settlement of their Sharaee problems. (NAAnsari)
Plan to set up more Sharaee committees in Delhi
White Paper on Terrorism:
calling out readers and researchers
The most important and burning issue facing Indian Muslims at present is the continuing
arrests and widespread fake implication of our youth in trumped up terror cases master-
minded by saffron elements in the government, IB and Police. Now almost all Muslim
organisations are up in arms against this state terror. People are organising dharnas,
meetings, conference etc all over the country.
As a long-term solution and serious response to this problem thrust upon us, All India
Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat (AIMMM) has decided to bring out a white paper on the
Muslim-related terrorism in the country. This was discussed and passed during the
Working Committee meeting on 7 July. But since AIMMM does not have the required
funds and staff, I have undertaken the responsibility of preparing this white paper which
will be comprehensive in around 600+ large format pages covering the whole history and
gensis, communalism, vested interests in various fields, analysis of various laws like
TADA, POTA and UAPA, fake encounters, acquittals, IB & Police role, media attitude,
case studies, statewise studies, SIMI and so-called Indian Mujahidin, Hindutva terror,
individual tragedies of victims, Azamgarh, Bhatkal, Malegaon, Darbhanga modules,
some basic documents, etc.
The target is to bring it out during the next six months and release it in a big conven-
tion at Delhi as a combined effort of all Muslim organisations, and thereafter present the
white paper to politicians, media, human rights orgs, especially those abroad, in order to
enlighten public opinion as well as to build pressure on our blind and deaf government.
The estimated cost of this white paper is Rs 25 lakh divided as follows: Rs 10 lakh
cost of preparation and payments to contributors plus six months salaries to three per-
sons including an expert; Rs 10 lakh for designing and printing the document in a world-
class format; and Rs 5 lakh convention costs. The first two concern the undersigned while
the last (convention) concerns AIMMM.
To finance this effort which will be a watershed in this struggle against state terrorism
in India, I need and solicit your full support. This may be either by direct contribution for
the effort or by buying copies in advance which could later be sent to you or to others at
your behalf. The estimated price of the white paper is Rs 2000 at least. Our well-wishers
can pay Rs 1000 only per copy as advance purchase (plus any actual postal or courier
charges which will be indicated and payable later). Payments for the copies may be made
to our publishing company (Pharos Media & Publishing Pvt Ltd, D-84 Abul Fazal Enclave-
I, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi 110 025 - Email: info@pharosmedia.com). Individuals and
organisations ordering a minimum of 100 copies will be included as sponsors of the White
Paper. Contribution towards the organisation of the convention may be sent to the All
India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, D-84 Abul Fazal Enclave, part 1, Jamia Nagar, New
Delhi 110 025.
Experts who can contribute to this white paper may kindly write to me with
some detail about their past experience and work.

Soofi Saheb missing from Loni Kotwali area
New Delhi: The way Muslims are being arrested in different parts
of India and they are being picked up without any information
being given to their families is really a matter of great concern. A
similar type of incident took place at Loni Kotwali also on 13 July
at around 9 in the morning where Soofi Moinuddin suddenly went
missing and in spite of all efforts and enquiries, his whereabouts
are unknown. As soon as this news reached his village and in
neighbouring areas, people rushed to the Kotwali and demanded
that Soofi Sahab be brought before them. When there was no
reply from the police, people shouted slogans. Soofi Moinuddin
Ansari is a resident of Pooja Colony. On 13 July he reached Loni
Kotwali alongwith his driver Raju and bodyguard Shaukat but
sent his driver Raju back to his residence to retrieve an important
paper. When the driver came back to the Kotwali and did not find
Soofi Saheb there, he contacted Kotwali police, but no one knew
his whereabouts. Soofi Sahebs brother Shakil Ahmad said that
everyone at the Kotwali said that we are finding out, proceedings
are going on, but there appears to be no result in sight. Soofi
Moinuddins elder son said that about two months ago, someone
fired at his father, but the bullet missed him and hit one Rashid
who was standing nearby and killed him. After that an official
guard was provided to him but he too did not come on 13 July.

their sorrow. They said Soofi Saheb used to share joys and sor-

Azam Khan vows to bring back Muslim waqf properties
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh urban development and minority affairs
minister Azam Khan created flutter by claiming that almost 90%
prime properties of the Waqf Board in the state have been sold
to builders during previous regimes of the Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) and Samajwadi party (SP). He said that he would bring a
legislation to restore all of them back to the board. However, his
claim led to embarrassment of the ruling SP in the House
because Muslims are the partys main votebank. Khan alleged
that there where massive irregularities in the urban development
department during the BSP rule. While presenting Mulsim wel-
fare budget in the state assembly, Khan said in the last five years
of BSP government and also during the SP rule earlier, waqf
properties were sold. He said that he is aware about the deal-
ings of waqf properties done by some vested interests in previ-
ous SP regime. However, Khan said that the new law on waqf will
have the provision to take over the buildings constructed by
builders over waqf land and they will become a part of the Waqf.
He said that there has been a rise of 80% in the budget of the
minority development. Khan alleged that BSP government under
a conspiracy did not act to ensure education for the minorities.
Mayawati government kept the file
of Rs 90 crores central funds,
meant for minorities, so that its
next instalments could not be pro-
vided to the state, alleged Azam.
The assembly passed the budget
of Rs 1673.82 crores by a voice
vote.

image of Lalita Pawar, Congress added fuel to the poster war fire
by encashing the popularity of the recent box office hit film
Gangs of Waseypur. A poster with Modis photo displayed
prominently appeared with the title Gangs of Chorpur (Gangs of
Thieveland). Apart from Modi, the poster featured industrialist
Gautam Adani as a member of the gang. Modi is shown assault-
ing R. K. Laxmans common man with the line: Agle election tak

Large-scale violence in Assam, govt playing helpless
New Delhi: The death toll in the ethnic violence in Indias Assam
state has risen to 32, authorities said on 24 July. More than
170,000 Muslims have fled their homes after attacks by tribes-
people against Muslims in Kokrajhar and Chirang and have taken
refuge in makeshift shelters or refugee camps. Security forces
have been given shoot on sight orders and a curfew has been
imposed in the troubled areas. There have been tensions
between indigenous groups and so-called Bengali Muslims in
Assam for many years. The current tension was building up since
early July but the authorities looked the other way as usual. The
current violence erupted on 20 July. Even during these attacks
the administration and security forces have been completely
biased and ensured the safety of the illegally armed tribesmen.
Muslim victims of earlier attacks, especially similar violence in
1994, are still living in refugee camps.
New Delhi: A poster was distributed here on 9 July in the prem-
ises of the BJP headquarters here. It warned against Muslim
youth marrying and converting Hindu girls and gave Bollywood
stars Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khans names as examples. The
poster was allegedly put up by Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, but
advertised a group called the Anti-Love Jihad Front. The poster
appealed to the Hindus to report such incidents, for which the
organization provided a phone number and an email id. The
Love Jihad slogan coined by Hindutwadis to malign Muslims
first appeared in Kerala but was dismissed by the Kerala police
after an official investigation. The Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena is
the same outfit, the members of which, allegedly beat up Team
Anna member Prashant Bhushan some months ago. The poster
was removed quickly after it attracted media attention but the
Delhi Police and administration failed to take notice or action.
Compare this with the eight month imprisonment suffered by
Okhla MLA Asif Mohammad Khan for pasting poster denounc-
ing Bushs war in Iraq in 2003.
Poster at BJP office warns of Muslims wooing Hindu girls
SM Mushrifs take on Abu Jundal episode:
it is contempt of court
Pune: Former IG Police Maharashtra and author of the path-
breaking book Who Killed Karkare, SM Mushrif said reacting to the
avalanche of news leaked by IB and Police after the extradition
of Zabihuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal that it is a clear case of con-
tempt of court and the Supreme Court can take action against the
culprits. He said in reaction to a report in Mumbais Urdu Times:
I would only like to enlighten your readers on the legal aspect of
the much published arrest of the prized catch in the Mumbai
attack case of 26/11 viz. Zabihuddin Ansari alias Jundal his so-
called confessional statement and other related news items.
At the outset, I would like to say that whatever is being pub-
lished in the media at the instance of the I.B. and the police has zero value in law and hence
deserves to be ignored totally as a trash. The behaviour of the I.B. and the police speaks of their
utter anxiety and lack of confidence.
I fail to understand what the I.B. and the police are driving at and what is their objective in
doing so? Are they trying to negate their own investigations or are they trying to pressurise the
Supreme Court before which the convicts appeal is pending for final disposal? Or are they trying
to create fear psychosis in the Muslim youths?
As has been well known, the Mumbai police, actively aided by the I.B. and the ATS, has very
meticulously and thoroughly investigated the 26/11 case and had filed its elaborate
chargesheet in the court. The trial court accepted the evidence furnished by the investigation
agency and awarded death penalty to the only surviving terrorist Ajmal Kasab. The Bombay High
Court also confirmed the death sentence. Presently, the appeal of Ajmal Kasab is pending n the
supreme court.
Presuming, if at this stage, the I.B. and the police have stumbled upon some vital piece of
evidence, which they thought could change the very complexion of the case, the best course
open for them was to approach the Supreme Court before which the convicts appeal is pending
and request it to remand the case back for further investigation and retrial.
If instead of following this legal course, the I.B. and the police are giving a very wide public-
ity to the so-called confessional statements given by the so-called prized catch or the master-
mind of the same case and that too while he is still in the police custody, it amounts to contempt
of the court as it amounts to suggesting that the trial court and the High Court did not apply their
mind and convicted the accused on the basis of insufficient evidence or wrong evidence. This
may also be construed as an attempt to pressurise the supreme court. Therefore, the supreme
court can take action against the I.B., the police and even the govt. for the contempt of court.

Mossad agents run false flag terror operations
in Bulgaria and other states
SORAYA SEPAHPOUR-ULRICH
July 20, 2012 Information Clearing House --
On July 18, 2012, an attack on an Israeli tourist bus in Bulgaria
took the lives of five Israeli nationals, a Bulgarian, and the mys-
terious suicide bomber. It is reported that the suspect, a young
Caucasian, had a fake Michigan drivers license. According to
Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, a top Bulgarian official warned that it
would be a mistake to blame a specific country or organization
for the attack. However, Israels Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu had other ideas.
Quick to point the finger at Iran, Mr. Netanyahu called it an
Iranian terror network spreading throughout the world. He
added: Exactly 18 years after the attack on a Jewish communi-
ty center in Argentina, the Iranian terror continues to hurt inno-
cent people. Apparently, it takes a village and some to set Iran
up.
These serious allegations with a potential for disaster,
demand scrutiny on several levels. The most fundamental ques-
tion which needs to be addressed is who benefits from these
attacks. One must question the location - location, location, loca-
tion. And finally, analyze the empirical data.
Who Benefits?
In spite of Israel and its Washington lobbies pushing for a war
against Iran, of late, prominent voices have adopted a less belli-
cose stance towards Iran and its nuclear program. The possibili-
ty of any military action against Iran which would undoubtedly
lead to a closure of the worlds most important oil chokepoint, the
Strait of Hormuz, has prompted politicians around the globe to
opt for a diplomatic solution to end the impasse with Iran.
Somewhat optimistically, Iran is investing its efforts in diplo-
macy. While continuing to work towards a mutually acceptable
solution with the P5+1, Iran is making extensive preparations for
the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit it will be hosting in
Tehran in August. Over the past three centuries, Iran has never
initiated a war and it would seem unlikely that at this juncture
Tehran would resort to terrorism and solicit condemnation and
possibly war. On the other hand, the targeting and killing of Israeli
citizens by Iran would serve to support and justify Netanyahus
call for military action against Iran.
For Netanyahu, domestic dissatisfaction aside, Israels poli-
cy of settlement expansion, a policy which government appoint-
ed jurists called legal, has brought international condemnation.
With the moderate Kadima party pulling out of government, leav-
ing Netanyahu in charge of hardline coalition opposed to Middle
East peace, Israel needs support from its allies more than ever.
Undoubtedly, Israel would have greater support as a victim
instead of as an aggressor.
Location, Location, Location
In addition to the Bulgaria attack, Mr. Netanyahu has blamed Iran
for attacks in other countries, including the apparent foiled attack
in Cyprus and the accusations leveled against Iran for plotting an
attack in Kenya.
Bulgaria: Bulgaria and Israel have very cordial relations. In
July 2011, an Israeli-Bulgarian declaration pledged wide-range
cooperation. A year later, on July 8th, Bulgarias former foreign
minister Solomon Passy told The Times of Israel that Israel
should aggressively seek to join NATO and the EU. Passy said:
Israel is part of Western civilization and of the Euro-Atlantic polit-
ical culture and thats why Israel shouldnt be shy to vocally say
that it wants to become a member of NATO, the EU and OSCE
[Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe],. Ten
days later, an attack against Israel took place in Bulgaria.
Thailand: Thailand and Israel have had cordial relations with
moderate and steady trade. In January 2012, Thailand recog-
nized Palestine as an independent state . A month later, Israel
blamed Iran for terrorist attacks in Bangkok. Allegedly, one of
the perpetrators had carried his Iranian passport on him to carry
out the mission!
India: India and Israel have had very amicable relations. On
July 17, 2003, JINSAs executive director delivered a speech in
Washington to the US-India Political Action Committee
International Conference on Terrorism in India in which he put
Israel, the United States, and India in the same boat - as the
number one on the terrorist hit list (Bonney 2008 ). In 2008, India
launched Israels spy satellite into orbit. In spite of its close ties
to Israel, India has not stopped trade with Iran. In fact, two days
prior to the Israeli embassy staff in India were targeted on
February 13, 2012 , India defended its oil trade with Iran .
Georgia: Israels relations with Georgia are unique. It was
widely reported in 2008 that Israel had the green light to attack
Iran from Georgian territory. Israel is thought to have played a
prominent role in the Russian-Georgian conflict (see link for full
details of the relationship). In 2010, Georgia and Iran entered a
new phase in their relationship and Nino Kalandadze, the
Georgian deputy foreign minister expressed that ties will further
deepen. As with India, Iran was blamed for the bomb attempts in
Georgia.
Given the nature of Israels relations with these countries,
one cannot definitively conclude why these countries were
picked by the perpetrators of these crimes. Perhaps these Israeli
allies are not safe for Israelis, or they are safe for false-flag oper-
ations.
Empirical Data
Mr. Netanyahu made a clear reference to 1994 saying: Exactly
18 years after the attack on a Jewish community center in
Argentina, the Iranian terror continues to hurt innocent people.
The 1994 bombing in Argentina was blamed squarely on Iran
without any evidence while all other voices were silenced.
Prominent voices such as Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate
director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles who sug-
gested that [Argentine] government and military figures may
have sought to embarrass the Menem government because of its
decision to release the files being investigated in the AMIA build-
ing at the time. An important project being carried out at the
Argentine Israelite Mutual
Association building was a
review of previously secret gov-
ernment files that reportedly
reveal how Nazis entered
Argentina following World War II
helped by Argentine officials.
The review of the files had gone
on for two years, but had not
been completed at the time of
the bombing. Speculation cen-
tered on the possibility that for-
mer Argentine government and
military officials, fearful of expo-
sure, were responsible for the
bomb attack.
This is but one of the many
instances where allegations
against Iran have been made
without any proof. However,
there have been many instances where Israeli false flag opera-
tions have come to light.
Many reports as well as a detailed accounts (Operation
Cyanide) reveals the Israeli plan to kill everyone on board the
USS Liberty in 1967 and put the blame on Egypt. The survivors
prompted President Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert
McNamara to order the investigation to conclude the attack was
a case of mistaken identity.
Israel has always had a knack for stealing passports and
other IDs to carry out false flag operations. According to The New
Zealand Herald (September 21, 2004), Mossad agents tried to
steal New Zealand passports, causing friction between New
Zealand and Israel. It is not the first time this has come to light,
according to the same source. Mossad agents had stolen
Canadian passports to assassinate a Jordanian leader. These
are not isolated cases.
In January 2012, it came to light that Israeli Mossad officers
recruited operatives belonging to the terrorist group Jundallah by
passing themselves off as American agents. According to two
U.S. intelligence officials, while toting U.S. passports and posing
as CIA officers, they recruited Jundallah operatives. One month
later, in February, NBC reported that according to US officials,
Israel armed and trained the terrorist MEK.
While there is plenty of empirical data to support that Israelis
are not shy about false flag operations, one would be hard
pressed to accept that Israel would carry out a false flag opera-
tion and kill its own. Not so.
The 1976 Operation Entebbe was a great tribute to Israeli
courage and praise of Israeli commandos of the Israel Defense
Forces (IDF) who rescued Israeli citizens at Entebbe airport in
Uganda. But newly released British government documents
reveal that the 1976 rescue of hostages, kidnapped on an Air
France flight and held in Entebbe was a false flag operation - the
file claims that Israel itself was behind the hijacking.
This rescue operation which became known as operation
Jonathan in honor of the units leader - Yonatan Netanyahu, the
current Prime Ministers brother. Yonatan was killed in the false
flag operation - as were four other Israelis.
When it comes to Israels political agenda, no sacrifice is too
great. A move against Iran will reverberate throughout the world.
It is important for political leaders around the globe to understand
that it may take a village to implement a political agenda, but it is
up to them to make sure that the agenda does not destroy the
global village.

War with Iran to last years, devas-
tate global economy: Brzezinski
Former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski warned in
an interview with Newsmax TV that a confrontation with Iran
would be disastrous for the United States, lasting for years and
possibly devastating America's economy. "A war in the Middle
East, in the present context, may last for years," Brzezinski, who
served in the Carter White House, tells Newsmax in an exclusive
interview. "And the economic consequences of it are going to be
devastating for the average American.
"High inflation. Instability. Insecurity. Probably significant iso-
lation for the United States in the world scene," Brzezinski says.
"Can you name me any significant country that's going to be in
that war together on our side? That's something no one can afford
to ignore," Brzezinski adds.
"Rushing to war is not a wise course of action," he says. "You
can always start a war, and you know pretty much what happens
when you start it. But you don't know how long it will last, what its
consequences will be - and they will be certainly very costly for
the United States."
Iran recently renewed its threats to close the Strait of Hormuz
unless sanctions against it were revoked. Tehran has repeatedly
threatened to close the vital oil-shipping channel, through which
40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports travel, in retaliation
for sanctions placed on its oil exports by Western nations.
"We would open it by force - and we have the power to do it,
and I'm fairly confident we would do it," says Brzezinski, who now
is Robert Osgood Professor of American Foreign Policy at the
School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins
University in Washington, D. C.. His latest book, released in
January, is Strategic Vision: America and the Crisis of Global
Power.
"But let's not be simple-minded about it. We can open it up,
but you can be absolutely certain that the costs of oil will skyrock-
et because it will still be a dangerous passage.
"In effect, the American taxpayer should be ready to pay $5
to $10 a gallon for the pleasure of having a war in the Strait of
Hormuz," Brzezinski explains. "This is another reason why it's a
wise course of action to be prudent and patient. Time's on our
side." He concurs with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak that
Iran probably will not have a nuclear weapon for "at least three
years or so" - but, regardless, a Tehran with such arsenals is a
major game-changer in the region.

MANNY FRIEDMAN
We Jews are a funny breed. We love to brag about every Jewish
actor. Sometimes we even pretend an actor is Jewish just
because we like him enough that we think he deserves to be on
our team. We brag about Jewish authors, Jewish politicians,
Jewish directors. Every time someone mentions any movie or
book or piece of art, we inevitably say something like, "Did you
know that he was Jewish?" That's just how we roll.
We're a driven group, and not just in regards to the art world.
We have, for example, AIPAC, which was essentially constructed
just to drive agenda in Washington DC. And it succeeds
admirably. And we brag about it. Again, it's just what we do.
But the funny part is when any anti-Semite or anti-Israel per-
son starts to spout stuff like, "The Jews control the media!" and
"The Jews control Washington!"
Suddenly we're up in arms. We create huge campaigns to
take these people down. We do what we can to put them out of
work. We publish articles. We've created entire organizations that
exist just to tell everyone that the Jews don't control nothin'. No,
we don't control the media, we don't have any more sway in DC
than anyone else. No, no, no, we swear: We're just like everybody
else!
Does anyone else (who's not a bigot) see the irony of this?
Let's be honest with ourselves, here, fellow Jews. We do con-
trol the media. We've got so many dudes up in the executive
offices in all the big movie production companies it's almost
obscene. Just about every movie or TV show, whether it be
"Tropic Thunder" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm," is rife with actors,
directors, and writers who are Jewish. Did you know that all eight
major film studios are run by Jews? Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty
good.
But that's not all. We also control the ads that go on those TV
shows.
And let's not forget AIPAC, every anti-Semite's favorite punch-
ing bag. We're talking an organization that's practically the equiv-
alent of the Elders of Zion. I'll never forget when I was involved in
Israeli advocacy in college and being at one of the many AIPAC
conventions. A man literally stood in front of us and told us that
their whole goal was to only work with top-50 school graduate stu-
dents because they would eventually be the people making
changes in the government. Here I am, an idealistic little kid that
goes to a bottom 50 school (ASU) who wants to do some grass-
roots advocacy, and these guys are literally talking about infiltrat-
ing the government. Intense.
Now, I know what everyone will say. That everyone tries to
lobby. Every minority group and every majority group. That every
group has some successful actors and directors. But that's a far
call from saying that we run Hollywood and Madison Avenue. That
the Mel Gibsons of the world are right in saying we're deliberate-
ly using our power to take over the world. That we've got some
crazy conspiracy going down.
Okay. Fine. So some of that is kooky talk.
But let's look at it a bit deeper.
Maybe it's true: everyone lobbies. Maybe it's true there are
actors of every ethnicity out there. But come on. We're the ones
who are bragging about this stuff all the time. Can't we admit that
we're incredibly successful? Can't we say it to the world?
I'll give my theory for why Jews don't want to talk about their
control of the media.
First of all, as much as Jews like to admit that so many of
them are successful, and that so many of them have accom-
plished so much, they hate to admit that it has to do with they're
being Jewish. Maybe they'll admit that it has something to do with
the Jewishexperience. But how many Jews will admit that there is
something inherently a part of every single one of them that helps
them to accomplish amazing things?
The ADL chairman, Abe Foxman, was interviewed in a great
article about the subject and he said that he "would prefer people
say that many executives in the industry 'happen to be Jewish.'"
This just about sums up the party line.
The truth is, the anti-Semites got it right. We Jews have some-
thing planted in each one of us that makes us completely different
from every group in the world. We're talking about a group of peo-
ple that just got put in death camps, endured pogroms, their whole
families decimated. And then they came to America, the one place
that ever really let them have as much power as they wanted, and
suddenly they're taking over. Please don't tell me that any other
group in the world has ever done that. Only the Jews. And we've
done it before.
That's why the Jews were enslaved in Egypt. We were too
successful. Go look at the Torah - it's right there. And we did it in
Germany too.
This ability to succeed, this inner drive, comes not from the
years of education or any other sort of conditional factors, but
because of the inner spark within each Jew.
Now, the reason groups like the ADL and AIPAC hate admit-
ting this is because, first of all, they are secular organizations.
Their whole agenda is to prove that every Jew is the same as
every other person in the world. I cannot imagine a more out-
landish agenda. No, we're different. We're special.
And clearly, that whole thing about big Jewish noses was
totally blown out of proportion.
Of course, people hate when anyone says this. They assume
that if you're saying that Jews are special, it somehow implies that
they're better.
To be honest, I'm not really sure what the word "better" even
means. What I do know is that being special simply means a per-
son has a responsibility to do good.
I think that's the real reason most Jews are so afraid to admit
that there's something inherently powerful and good about them.
Not because they're afraid of being special. But because they're
afraid of being responsible. It means that they're suddenly culpa-
ble when they create dirty TV shows that sully the spiritual atmos-
phere of the world. It means that things can't just be created for
the sake of amusement or fun or even "art."
Suddenly, we can't screw up the
world.
The interesting thing is that Jews
have done so much for the world in so
many other ways. They've moved forward
civil rights; they've helped save lives in
Darfur, Haiti and just about everywhere
else.
But that's not enough. Fixing the
world physically is only half the battle.
Our larger battle, the harder battle, is
elevating the world spiritually. And this is
what the people that fight with every inch
of their soul to prove that Jews are just
the same as everyone else are afraid of.
It means that we can no longer just
"express ourselves." We'll have to start
thinking about the things we create and
the way we act. It means we'll have to
start working together. It means we'll
have to hold one other, and ourselves, to
a higher standard.
The time has come, though. We no
longer have to change our names. We no
longer have to blend in like chameleons.
We own a whole freaking country.
Instead, we can be proud of who we are, and simultaneously
aware of our huge responsibility - and opportunity. (The Times of
Israel)

Iran to Launch Domestic
Search Engine
Tehran: Iran plans to launch its first home-made search engine
which supports the Persian language intelligently, an Iranian IT
official announced on 21 July. "Despite the foreign search
engine's support for the Persian language, we want to launch
domestic search engines which support the Persian language
intelligently and present a more applicable understanding of the
Iranian users' demand and intention," Deputy Head of Iran's
Information Technology (IT) Organization Ali Asqar Ansari told
FNA.
"Operators which will be called 'Fajr' will receive operation
license for presenting search engines in Iran," Ansari explained.
Iran had also earlier said that it has plans to establish a
"national information network" billed as a system that would
function like a sort of intranet for the Islamic Republic.
Iranian Minister of Communication and Information
Technology Reza Taqipour said in April 2011 that the plan would
be fully implemented by March 2013.
He said that the country's own internet network will solve
problems with costs, security and bandwidth.
When the network becomes operational in a few weeks,
internet use will no longer need an international bandwidth for
domestic connections and bandwidth expenses will drop up to
30 percent, Taqipour said. With domestic communications rout-
ed through the "national information network" the international
bandwidth will be freed for international communications,
Taqipour said. The network's purpose is to provide Iranian citi-
zens with the safe environment to use the internet and to protect
Iran from cyber-attacks. Protecting privacy and preventing cyber-
attacks are concerns of all the countries in the world, the infor-
mation minister said.

KARAMATULLAH K. GHORI
Last month when a woman was publicly
executed by a bunch of men for alleged
adultery, outside Kabul and not far from
the seat of power of the puppet govern-
ment of Hamid Karzai, there was uproar in
the western news media. There was chest-
beating aplenty that the Taliban-like sum-
mary justice was returning to Afghanistan.
There was, however, none among the
bleeding hearts with enough moral integri-
ty to state the obvious: that all this was happening in a country
where the full might of the west, in the guise of US and NATO,
has been present for the past 11 years-with more than 150,000
troops armed to teeth-and more than $ 400 billion dollars have
been spent on allegedly ridding the country of the blighted Taliban
presence and blessing on its people the sunshine of democracy.
The neo-imperialist presence in Afghanistan has undergone
a series of justification-changes since US first unleashed its mili-
tary fury on Afghanistan-in the wake of George W. Bushs
declared vendetta to teach the Afghans a lesson for sheltering
those held responsible for the cataclysm of 9/11. It was, to begin
with, a war of retribution to make the Taliban-led Afghanistan pay
for the crime of colluding with Al-Qaeda. But once that target was
accomplished and the Taliban were toppled, the reason for being
in Afghanistan mutated, quickly, into a mission of bringing to the
Afghan people the fruits of western-blessed democracy. In other
words, it was an unabashed rehash of the 19th century western
mantra of the white mans burden. Afghanistan had to be civilised,
no matter what.
However, after 11 long years, neither the security situation in
Afghanistan looks any more promising than what it was when the
Taliban were in command in Kabul, nor the lot of the Afghan
women-deemed most vulnerable and thus worthy of western
humanitarian support-seems any better.
The Taliban, never quite routed or rendered ineffective as a
force of reckoning in Afghanistan, clearly seem to be on the
rebound. Security for the common Afghan is precarious even in
those areas where US and NATO claim the Taliban have been
purged and driven into wilderness. The Afghan people are, obvi-
ously, in a greater predicament in those areas which are still
regarded as the Taliban strongholds.
Corruption of the ruling elite spawned by western presence in
Afghanistan is, no doubt, a powerful element behind the revival of
the Taliban, whom many increasingly see as the lesser of the two
options. Political corruption, led by Karzais own extended family
and clan, has been endemic, to the abiding concern of ordinary
Afghans. A new class of corrupt cronies has been fostered right
under the wings of Karzai. In the name of promoting democracy,
western governments have lavished favours on this elite class
and neglected the welfare and interests of the ordinary people
who suffered under the Taliban but have, obviously, been suffer-
ing more under the present dispensation of rogues and
scoundrels.
Canadas largest newspaper, The Toronto Star, recently ran a
series of first-hand reports on its front page, filed by its reporter,
Paul Watson, from Afghanistan, based on his impressions of
those projects that had been commissioned by the Canadian gov-
ernment with great fanfare for uplifting the socio-economic condi-
tions of the Afghan people. Watsons revealing reports portrayed
dismal conditions of these projects that included an irrigation dam
and schools set up for the education of Afghan girls. The dam is
not irrigating land and schools arent providing education to the
children as intended.
Afghan women had been trumpeted as the most vulnerable
segment of the Afghan society when western military presence in
Afghanistan allocated to itself a new mission, that of alleviating
their lot, in particular, and securing their rights in a society that
had traditionally treated them as chattels and pieces of property.
Western NGOs swung into action with lan to wrench Afghan
women from the bowels of ignorance, illiteracy, maltreatment and
subjugation.
But after 11 years and 55 billion dollars said to have been
spent on improving the social standing and conditions of the
Afghan women, the picture today seems as dark and dismal for
them as it was at the commencement of the undertaking. Reports
from western press mention hundreds of schools for girls remain-
ing closed because of the Taliban intimidation. Women are still a
haunted and persecuted group treated as second class citizens,
even under the supposed democratic and representative Karzai
regime. Womens rights are still being given a short-shrift by
Afghanistans legal system and courts are behaving not much dif-
ferently than the Talibans kangaroo courts which had been
denounced in the west as archaic and belonging to the stone age.
In the last four months alone, there were 52 reported cases
of murder of women; 42 of them were murders committed by fam-
ily members at the behest of the archaic jirgas for allegedly dis-
honouring the familys name. The Afghan women are entitled, in
the face of such cruelty and barbarity, to ask what blessings has
the western occupation of their country-in the name of ridding it of
injustice-brought to them and what can they look forward to once
the western forces finally pack up and depart from their land?
It was, as such, no news for the Afghan people that donors at
the recent Tokyo conference, assembled to ferret out aid from
wealthy countries still obliged to support the neo-imperialist mis-
sion in Afghanistan, pledged $ 16 billion over the next four years
for social up-liftment of the Afghan people. Knowing the rampant
corruption on Hamid Karzais watch in that country, not even most
donors are convinced that their dollops of aid wouldnt end up in
the already bulging pockets of Karzai and his cronies.
Its obvious that the US and NATO presence in Afghanistan
has failed, miserably, on both counts: security and uplifting the
socio-economic conditions of the Afghan people.
To add to the concern of the Afghans, theres no light at the
end of the dark tunnel for them now that the western neo-imperi-
alists, having miserably failed in their mission to eliminate the
Taliban are showing all the symptoms of defeat. With 2014
already declared as the year for the final eviction of western
forces from Afghanistan, all focus is now riveted on patching
things up with the derided Taliban, while at the same time desper-
ately beefing up the ranks of the new Afghan army to carry on the
western effort.
According to plans currently on foot, the new Afghan army-for
the training of which thousands of American and other western
troops would still be left in Afghanistan after 2014-would have a
strength of 350,000, a huge number for a country as poor and
pauper as Afghanistan. The yearly expenditure on this large force
is estimated to be around $ 11 billion-three times the total budget
of Afghanistan.
It isnt clear who will foot the bill for supporting such a large
army and maintaining it in fighting form so it may deliver on the
expectations that it would keep the Taliban at bay and not allow
them to retake Afghanistan once the western forces are gone.
Those knowing the recent history of Afghanistan suffer from
no burst of optimism that the new Afghan army would remain a
disciplined force once its mentors have departed from the scene.
Afghanistans chequered tribal moorings are as active as ever
and their centrifugal pull wouldnt lose its magic over the new
recruits. Besides, the over-arching infiltration of the Taliban in
every segment of the Afghan society would spin its own spell on
the new force, inevitably. Desertions from its ranks, and defection
to the Taliban, are a foregone conclusion, even to some of their
western mentors who seem quite resigned to this inevitability. The
Taliban should have ample cause to rejoice on prospects of
receiving infusion of well-trained soldiers into their ranks.
With an eye on this denouement of its epic adventure in
Afghanistan, US has already been dispensing feelers, all around,
that 2014 will not see a complete end to its military presence in
Afghanistan. The genial and affable Ryan Crocker-resigning from
his post as American Ambassador to Afghanistan for presumed
reasons of health-told interviewers from two American papers,
before leaving his Kabul post, that US is committed to carry on
its mission until 2024, at the very least. Knowing Crocker, theres
absolutely no reason to doubt his frank admission.
Pundits are at one that western governments, nearing the
end of their misadventure in Afghanistan, have precious little to
convince their increasingly frustrated and disgusted people that
all that was not a complete waste of money, men and strategy.
Theyre desperately on the prowl for another option that could sal-
vage their bruised reputation and pride, vis--vis their electorate.
Syria happens to be just one such option that presents itself
and western governments, on cue from US, seem keenly going
after it.
The mess and mayhem triggered there by a purblind and
obdurate Baathist regime, led by Bashar Al Assad, over the past
15 months, is not only an unfolding and bloodied tragedy but its
eventual denouement promises to be bloodier and messier. The
western governments clearly see in it an opportunity to put their
money on the winning side-the opposition forces gaining strength
and adherents by the day-just the way they did in the Libyan cri-
sis.
Of course Syria is much more complex and sordid than Libya
ever was. In Libya it was a straight-forward conflict between the
tyrant Qaddafi and the Libyan people fed up with his excesses. In
Syria it is that plus sectarian and ethnic fault-lines all crossing
over each other and jumbling into a kaleidoscope; borrowing
words from Winston Churchill, its an enigma rolled into a riddle.
But the most sensitive angle to the Syrian imbroglio is the
extraneous factors woven into the crisis.
For one, there is the Israeli angle, which is dear to the west-
ern hearts. The Baathists were never kosher to western strategy
for Middle East and the Arab world; no mercy was shown to the
Iraqi part of it under Saddam. Likewise, Bashars father, Hafiz Al
Assad, was as much a pariah as Saddam but was tolerated
because in his later years he chose to not ignite the demand for
the return of the Golan Heights seized by Israel. Bashar contin-
ued that policy and was welcomed. In fact, for a while, he was
hailed as a moderate and reformer.
U.S and other western powers arent so sure how a succes-
sor populist regime in Damascus would behave vis--vis Israel
and, hence, would still prefer to move cautiously and gingerly and
not hasten into an early end to the crisis. The rise of the much-
maligned (in western eyes) Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as a
result of free choice of its people, has already been ringing alarm
bells in western capitals and noises of concern for Egypts future
course of action in regard to their blue-eyed Israel and the peace
treaty can be heard, loud and clear.
But, then, there is the rosy prospect of cutting off Irans sup-
ply lines to Hizbollah in Lebanon-a constant and annoying thorn
in Israels side and, by implication, also in western sides-with the
extinction of the Assad regime in Damascus is too tempting to be
passed off. Iran is still the biggest prize on the chessboard of ME.
The demise of Assad regime in Syria dangles the added bonus of
cutting Iran to size. Western governments would think of them-
selves as a bunch of nave poltroons if they were to allow such a
glittering prize to slip through their fingers.
But fortune seems inclined to favour the western strategists;
they have some Trojan Horses well implanted into the Arab camp;
wealthy oil producing autocratic regimes that allow no freedoms
to their own people but are all game to roll out their billions to sup-
port and bankroll the cause of the Syrian people against their own
corrupt and tyrannical regime. The likes of Saudi Arabia and tiny
Qatar are in the forefront of countries ensuring the supply of
weapons to the Syrian liberation forces camped in Turkey. The
latter has its own axe to grind with Assad and is playing along. But
Turkey cant be unmindful of the fallout from the demise of Assad
regime in Syria, especially the ethnic Pandora box that could
pose some tough choices for Ankara in regard to its own Kurdish
minority.
Thats how the Syrian imbroglio looks at the moment. The
western governments, despairing in Afghanistan, are getting into
the act in Syria because their covert involvement there holds a
more promising outcome. They arent averse, at all, to wreak
havoc on the lives of peoples considered inferior just as their fore-
bears carved out colonies and empires to whet their appetites for
aggrandizement. The jaded mantra of the white mans burden
remains their guiding star.
Neo-imperialism losing in Afghanistan but closing in on Syria
Pundits are at one that western governments, nearing the end of their misadventure in
Afghanistan, have precious little to convince their increasingly frustrated and disgusted
people that all that was not a complete waste of money, men and strategy. Theyre des-
perately on the prowl for another option that could salvage their bruised reputation and
pride, vis--vis their electorate.
Syria happens to be just one such option that presents itself and western governments,
on cue from US, seem keenly going after it.
Holocaust blackmail continues
Germany Agrees to $300 Million
More in Restitution to Survivors
New York (JTA): Germany has agreed to provide restitution pay-
ments to an additional 80,000 Jews in what Claims Conference
officials are describing as a historic breakthrough.
The agreement, which was reached Monday in negotiations
between German officials and Claims Conference representa-
tives, is likely to result in additional payments of approximately
$300 million. Most of the money will go to Nazi victims in the for-
mer Soviet Union who have never before qualified for pensions or
payments from German restitution money.
"This is the last group of people who have never received any
compensation," Greg Schneider, the executive vice president of
the Claims Conference, said in a telephone interview from
Washington, where the negotiations took place. Most of the
money will come from the Hardship Fund, which grants one-time
payouts of 2,556 euros -- approximately $3,150 -- to Jews who
fled the Nazis as they swept eastward through Europe. Until now,
those payments were not available to Jews in Ukraine, Russia
and other non-European Union countries in Eastern Europe.
Applications for the fund will be available starting Nov. 1 (see:
www.claimscon.org).
In Monday's negotiations, Germany also agreed to equalize
the monthly pensions it sends to survivors around the world, cor-
recting what until now had been a disparity that saw survivors liv-
ing in western countries receiving more than those in eastern
countries. All survivors will now receive the equivalent of approxi-
mately $370 per month. Germany also agreed to relax the eligibil-
ity rules for those who receive restitution payments for being
forced into hiding during the Nazi era. Until now, only those who
went into hiding for at least 12 months were eligible; now the eli-
gibility threshold will be six months.
Since 1951 Germany has paid more than 102 billion marks,
about $61.8 billion at 1998 exchange rates, in federal government
reparation payments to Israel and Third Reich victims. In addition,
Germans have paid out billions in private and other public funds,
including about 75 million marks ($49 million) by German firms in
compensation to wartime forced laborers, the Welt am Sonntag
newspaper reported. These figures are based on calculations by
the German Finance Ministry.

IMAM ABU HAMID AL-GHAZALI
It should be known that there are three grades of fasting:
ordinary, special and extra-special. Ordinary fasting means
abstaining from food, drink and sexual satisfaction.
Special Fasting means keeping ones ears, eyes, tongue, hands
and feet - and all other organs - free from sin.
Extra-special Fasting means fasting of the heart from unwor-
thy concerns and worldly thoughts, in total disregard of everything
but God - Great and Glorious is He. This kind of Fast is broken by
thinking of worldly matters, except for those conducive to religious
ends, since these constitute provision for the Hereafter and are
not of this lower world.
Those versed in the spiritual life of the heart have said that a
sin is recorded against one who concerns himself all day with
arrangements for breaking his Fast. Such anxiety stems from lack
of trust in the bounty of God - Great and Glorious is He - and from
lack of certain faith in His promised sustenance.
To this third degree belong the Prophets, the true awliya and
the intimates of God. It does not lend itself to detailed examination
in words, as its true nature is better revealed in action. It consists
in utmost dedication to God - Great and Glorious is He - to the
neglect of everything other than God - Exalted is He. It is bound
up with the significance of His words: Say: Allah (sent it down):
then leave them to play in their vain discussions [Al-Anam, 6:91].
Inward Requirements
As for Special Fasting, this is the kind practiced by the righteous.
It means keeping all ones organs free from sin. Six things are
required for its accomplishment:
See Not What Displeases God: A chaste regard, restrained from
viewing anything that is blameworthy or reprehensible, or that dis-
tracts the heart and diverts it from the remembrance of God, Great
and Glorious is He. Said the Prophet, on whom be peace: The
furtive glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Satan, on him be
Gods curse. Whoever forsakes it for fear of God will receive from
Him - Great and Glorious is He - a faith the sweetness of which
he will find within his heart.
Jabir relates on the authority of Anas that Gods Messenger,
on him be peace, said: Five things break a mans Fast: lying,
backbiting, gossiping, perjury and a lustful gaze.
Speak Not: Guarding ones tongue from idle chatter, lying, gos-
siping, obscenity, rudeness, arguing and controversy; making it
observe silence and occupying it with remembrance of God -
Great and Glorious is He - and with recitation of Quran. This is the
fasting of the tongue. Said Sufyan: Backbiting annuls the Fast.
Layth quotes Mujahid as saying: Two habits annul Fasting: back-
biting and telling lies.
The Prophet, on him be peace, said: Fasting is a shield; so
when one of you is Fasting he should not use foul or foolish talk.
If someone attacks him or insults him, let him say: I am Fasting,
I am Fasting!
According to Tradition: Two women were Fasting during the
time of Gods Messenger, on him be peace. They were so fatigued
towards the end of the day, from hunger and thirst, that they were
on the verge of collapsing. They therefore sent a message to
Gods Messenger, on him be peace, requesting permission to
break their Fast. In response, the Prophet, on him be peace, sent
them a bowl and said: Tell them to vomit into it what they have
eaten. One of them vomited and half filled the bowl with fresh
blood and tender meat, while the other brought up the same so
that they filled it between them. The onlookers were astonished.
Then the Prophet, on him be peace, said: These two women
have been Fasting from what God made lawful to them, and have
broken their Fast on what God, Exalted is He, made unlawful to
them. They sat together and indulged in backbiting, and here is
the flesh of the people they maligned!
Hear Not: Closing ones ears to everything reprehensible; for
everything unlawful to utter is likewise unlawful to listen to. That is
why God - Great and Glorious is He - equated the eavesdropper
with the profiteer, in His words, Exalted is He: Listeners to false-
hood, consumers of illicit gain (al- Maidah, 5:42).
God - Great and Glorious is He - also said: Why do their rab-
bis and priests not forbid them to utter sin and consume unlawful
profit? [al-Maidah, 5:63]
Silence in the face of backbiting is therefore unlawful. God,
Exalted is He, said: You are then just like them (al-Nisa, 4:140).
That is why the Prophet, on him be peace, said: The backbiter
and his listener are copartners in sin.
Do Not: Keeping all other limbs and organs away from sin: the
hands and feet from reprehensible deeds, and the stomach from
questionable food at the time of breaking Fast. It is meaningless
to Fast - to abstain from lawful food - only to break ones Fast on
what is unlawful. A man who Fasts like this may be compared to
one who builds a castle but demolishes a city. Lawful food is inju-
rious in quantity not in quality, so Fasting is to reduce the former.
A person might well give up excessive use of medicine, from fear
of ill effects, but he would be a fool to switch to taking poison. The
unlawful is a poison deadly to religion, while the lawful is a medi-
cine, beneficial in small doses but harmful in excess. The object
of Fasting is to induce moderation. Said the Prophet, on him be
peace: How many of those who Fast get nothing from it but
hunger and thirst! This has been taken to mean those who break
their Fast on unlawful food. Some say it refers to those who
abstain from lawful food, but break their Fast on human flesh
through backbiting, which is unlawful. Others consider it an allu-
sion to those who do not guard their organs from sin.
Avoid Overeating: Not to over-indulge in lawful food at the time of
breaking Fast, to the point of stuffing ones belly. There is no
receptacle more odious to God - Great and Glorious is He - than
a belly stuffed full with lawful food. Of what use is the Fast as a
means of conquering Gods enemy and abating appetite, if at the
time of breaking it one not only makes up for all one has missed
during the daytime, but perhaps also indulges in a variety of extra
foods?
It has even become the custom to stock up for Ramadan with
all kinds of foodstuffs, so that more is consumed during that time
than in the course of several other months put together. It is well-
known that the object of Fasting is to experience hunger and to
check desire, in order to reinforce the soul in piety. If the stomach
is starved from early morning till evening, so that its appetite is
aroused and its craving intensified, and it is then offered delicacies
and allowed to eat its fill, its taste for pleasure is increased and its
force exaggerated; passions are activated which would have lain
dormant under normal conditions.
The spirit and secret nature of Fasting is to weaken the forces
which are Satans means of leading us back to evil. It is therefore
essential to cut down ones intake to what one would consume on
a normal night, when not Fasting. No benefit is derived from the
Fast if one consumes as much as one would usually take during
the day and night combined. Moreover, one of the properties con-
sists in taking little sleep during the daytime, so that one feels the
hunger and thirst and becomes conscious of the weakening of
ones powers, with the consequent purification of the heart.
One should let a certain degree of weakness carry over into
the night, making it easier to perform the (tahajjud) and to recite
the praises of God (awrad). It may then be that Satan will not
hover around ones heart, and that one will behold the Kingdom of
Heaven. The Night of Destiny represents the night on which
something of this Kingdom is revealed. This is what is meant by
the words of God, Exalted is He: We surely revealed it on the
Night of Power (al-Qadr, 97:1).
Anyone who puts a bag of food between his heart and his
breast becomes blind to this revelation. Nor is keeping the stom-
ach empty sufficient to remove the veil, unless one also empties
the mind of everything but God, Great and Glorious is He. That is
the entire matter, and the starting point of it all is cutting down on
food.
Look To God With Fear And Hope: After the Fast has been bro-
ken, the heart should swing like a pendulum between fear and
hope. For one does not know if ones Fast will be accepted, so
that one will find favour with God, or whether it will be rejected,
leaving one among those He abhors. This is how one should be
at the end of any act of worship one performs.
It is related of Al-Hasan ibn Abil Hasan Al-Basri that he once
passed by a group of people who were laughing merrily. He said:
God - Great and Glorious is He - has made the month of
Ramadan a race course, on which His creatures compete in His
worship. Some have come in first and won, while others have
lagged behind and lost. It is absolutely amazing to find anybody
laughing and playing about on the day when success attends the
victors, and failure the wasters. By God, if the veil were lifted off,
the doer of good would surely be preoccupied with his good works
and the evildoer with his evil deeds in too much of joy to indulge
in idle sport, while for one who has suffered rejection laughter will
be precluded by remorse. Of Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays it is reported that
he was once told: You are an aged elder; Fasting would enfeeble
you. But he replied: By this I am making ready for a long journey.
Obedience to God, Glorified is He, is easier to endure than His
punishment. Such are the inwardly significant meanings of
Fasting. (Tasawwuf.org)

SUBHASH GATADE
How many people from this part of South Asia know the name of
Soomru Allah Bux (1900-1943), a legendary leader from pre-par-
tition India, who fought against the communal politics of Muslim
League, was popular enough to defeat its candidate to the state
assembly and wielded so
much support among the
masses that he could even
become Chief Minister of
Sindh in early 1940s. As a
chief minister, he was
opposed to the British war
efforts in 1941 and openly
supported Gandhijis Quit
India movement. History
records the tragic fact that he
was assassinated on 14 May
1943 by a hireling of the
British imperialists who was
close to the communal poli-
tics of the League. Or for that
matter how many people
have heard about Mayzada
Hashina Begum, a leader of
Calcutta scavengers and
sewerage cleaners, who
fought for their rights, court-
ed jail during the Second
World War, fought against
police oppression, social
injustice and obscurantist
ideas of mullas and confront-
ed boldly rabid communal
approach of Muslim
Leaguers.
The book Freedom
Movement and Indian
Muslims -- written by late
Santimoy Ray (1914-1999),
a renowned freedom fighter,
educationist and fighter for
communal harmony, who
had been part of the historic
Jugantar Revolutionary Party
since his young age and
faced a decade of imprison-
ment -- not only provides
many such important details
which have remained largelly
hidden from the eyes of our
people but also brings forth the role of Indian Muslims on the
broader canvas of anti-imperialist struggle. His contention is that
the main reason to exclude struggles of 18th and 19th centuries
by conventional luminaries is a conscious or (may be) an uncon-
scious endeavour to blackout the role of the peasantry - both
Hindus and Muslims - and of the tribals, more particularly of the
heroic and positive role of the Muslim community in India to end
the British rule in India.
The book is dedicated to those martyrs of Pakistan and India
who laid down their lives in protecting the minorities. It was first
published by Peoples Publishing House in 1979, and has been
reprinted by National Book Trust. It should be translated into all
Indian languages as it can help millions of people to get out of the
stereotypes they are still carrying about the other community.
Divided into six chapters, the book covers around two cen-
turies of British rule and the militant struggles which arose against
it. Starting from the Revolt of Sannyasis and Fakirs (1763-1800),
and Wahabi Revolt (1820-70), the book moves on to Phase of
Emerging Nationalism (1857-1905), Epoch of Armed Struggle
(1900-34), and ends by discussing National Mass Struggle and
Indian Muslims (1919-34 , 1934-47). A significant part of the
Appendix, which comprises of an extract from Prof Sumit
Sarkars work, and Sedition Committee Report on Muslim partic-
ipation in the revolutionary movement before the First World War
is the incomplete list of Muslim martyrs in the freedom move-
ment. The 40-plus page list of Muslim martyrs has been culled
from various sources which starts from the martyrs of the Wahabi
movement like Abdullah (hanged 1871), Ahmadullah (born 1808,
death in Andaman Jail 1881) and proceeds with revolutionaries of
Agniyug (the phase of what has been popularly known as revo-
lutionary terrorism) ; Anti-Rowlatt Act movement and Jalianwala
Bagh tragedy and concludes with the Royal Indian Navy revolt of
1946. It also includes martyrs of the Kisan and Workers move-
ment and a supplementary list of martyrs of 1857 war has also
been included. The author expresses regret that he has to name
these revolutionaries as Muslims (page 79) but he explains the
rationale behind it as to expose the illogicality and baselessness
of the anti-Muslim attitude of the Hindu pundits of history and
expresses the hope that the reader would appreciate the pur-
pose.
What prompted the author to take up this work is worth
emphasising. In the Preface, the author elaborates on the per-
version of history in school and college textbooks and the man-
ner in which Muslims are stigmatised at various levels, ranging
from them being considered foreigners or a separate cultural
identiy and betrayers of the national struggle' and how it had
been the deliberate policy of the British rulers during post-Mutiy
period to generate more acrimony and strifes amongst various
communities and groups.
The discipline of history-writing on the framework drawn by
James Mill became an important tool
here. It led to the depiction of Muslim
tyranny over subject people - the Hindus
- and the resistance of Rajputs etc
became their post-war themes. For a
layperson, it may be said that Mill cate-
gorised the Indian history into three peri-
ods: Hindu civilisation, Muslim civilisa-
tion and the British period. This was
largely accepted without question and
this understanding has stayed with us
for almost two hundred years.
According to Prof Romilla Thapar,
Mill argued that the Hindu civilisation
was stagnant and backward, the Muslim
only marginally better and the British
colonial power was an agency of
progress because it could legislate
change for improvement in India. In the
Hindutva version this periodisation
remains, only the colours have
changed: the Hindu period is the golden
age, the Muslim period the black, dark
age of tyranny and oppression, and the
colonial period is a grey age almost of
marginal importance compared to the
earlier two.
There is no doubt that colonialists
succeeded in influencing/impacting
Indian histriography so much so that
when, according to author, India wit-
nessed stirring phases of Hindu-Muslim
unity, one witnessed knighthood for Dr
Jadunath Sarkar whose four-volume
study on The Falll of Mughal Empire
well served the cause of British imperial-
ism. The author cannot hide his derision
for one of the leading lights of this
school - the eminent historian Dr R. C.
Mazumdar who had explained his phi-
losophy in the 1968 Diwali number of the
RSS organ Organiser in these words:
that all the Muslims should go to
Pakistan to solve the knotty problem of
communalism.
Elaborating on the exclusive approach of this conservative
school of history in the introduction, the author returns to
Dr Mazumdar again and tells how he refused to give any impor-
tance to the great uprising of 1857 and wanted us to go at least
700 years back when Bakhtiar Khilji first conquered parts of North
India to write the history of Indias freedom movement!
The author is happy that a new generation of historians have
cropped up to meet the challenge of the pernicious philosophy
and cult of hatred - which creates thousands of Nathuram
Godses - and observes that many of the earlier theories of
Dr Jadunath Sarkar and Dr Mazumdar have been mutilated and
nearly demolished.
II
The first chapter Revolt of Sannyasis and Fakirs (1763-1800)
dwells upon the first flag of revolt raised against the establish-
ment of British rule in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa which was
unfurled by Majnusha, leader of a band of Fakirs along with
Bhawani Pathak, leader of a band of Sannyasis. These fakirs and
sannyasis mainly belonged to religious orders like Madaria sect
among Muslims and Saiba sect amongst Hindus. Although they
were not properly organised but could successfully inspire
oppressed peasantry. Their forces could inflict series of defeats
on the British armies. By 1800, this first uprising against the
Firangis came to an end but left an indelible imprint upon future
struggles like the Wahabis and revolutionaries of Agniyug known
as terrorists.
The second chapter focusses on the Wahabi revolt (1820-
70) which was one of the earliest, most consistent and protract-
ed and the most remarkably anti-British movements which dom-
inated the nineteenth century (page 4). It wielded influence from
Peshawar to Dhaka and also made inroads into southern states.
The eighteen sixties witnessed (1863-65) a series of trials by
which leaders of this seditious community were arrested and
sent to jail or given capital punishment. All such prisoners stood
valiantly on the face of the tremendous torture. In 1872, one
Mohammed Sherali, a Wahabi imprisoned in Andaman Jail
assasinated Lord Mayo while he was visiting Portblair jail.
Chapters three deal with the phase of emerging nationalism
and the changes in the nature of resistance put up by the Indian
masses and the changed modus operandi of the Britishers as
well. One notices that the Muslim mind cannot be considered a
monolith and one can categorise the Muslim mind into modernist
and traditionalist or pro-British and anti-British. The modernist or
pro-British Muslim leaders felt dismayed at the growing frustration
of Muslims, declining aristocracy and their retinue including
ulama. They opposed the suicidal resistance of the Wahabis and
particularly the negative attitude of the ulama. They wanted that
Muslim masses accept British rule as salvation and appealed to
the Muslim masses to educate themselves on western lines. The
traditionalist represented by the ulama continued in the same
vein and looked beyond the immediate communal gains to the
historical growth of Indias national liberation struggle. The
founders of Darul Uloom Deoband represented the rebellious
spirit of the disgruntled Muslims since the days of the Wahabi
movement.
The author brings forth an important point that a significant
chunk of Muslims from the then Bengal province had opposed the
partition of Bengal which was supposed to be a smart move on
part of the British colonialists to divide the Hindus and Muslims.
According to him, The documents in government archives per-
taining to the movement against partition of Bengalprove that
throughout East Bengal in different districts a good number of
mass meetings were held to oppose this partition (page 30). He
discusses a mammoth gathering in Calcutta on 7 August 1905
where the main resolution was seconded by Maulvi Hasibuddin
Ahmed.
Chapter four starts with the advent of Agniyug, an age of mil-
itant nationalism, the birth of various secret revolutionary soci-
eties in India: Mitramela in Tamil Nadu, Abhinav Bharat in
Maharashtra, Atmaunnati Anushilan, Suhrid, Sadhana, Brati,
Sadesh Bandhab Samities in Bengal, Bharatmata Samiti in
Punjab and ends with the sacrifices by revolutionaries under the
leadership of Surya Sen.
While discussing the martyrdom of Khudiram Bose at the age
of eighteen who belonged to the Jugantar group of the Anushilan
Samiti (11 August 1908), it mentions the role of an unnamed
Muslim lady who had given him shelter before his arrest who was
known to be the sister of Moulvi Abdul Waheed.
The author narrates an experience when Dr Alam, a leader
from Punjab who toured Muslim majority provinces preaching
against communalism, had given his presidential address at the
second annual meeting of the Bengal provincial students confer-
ence held in August 1928 at Mymensingh town. He writes with
candidness that he still remembers his words: We must fight
British imperialism with all our might; but before that we must fight
communalism everywhere and always.
The last chapter discusses the trial of the INA prisoners Shah
Nawaz, Dhillon and Rashid Ali and how it electrified the whole
country from Kashmir to Cape Camorin. There were demonstra-
tions in major cities of undivided India when Rashid Ali Day was
observed by Muslim League, Congress, Communist Party and
Forward Bloc. A mighty demonstration of around two lakh people
was held in Calcutta.
The author concludes his monograph with the words that
while the rise of Muslim League and its ultimate triumph is being
recognised as a dominant negative feature, the positive contribu-
tion of the Muslim community in India went unrecognised among
many knowledgeable people. He ends with a note: This is a
basic malady of the Indian social situation which needs to be ruth-
lessly rooted out if India wants to survive and prosper as a civi-
lized community in the world.

Accept the truth
Khan Vellayani objects to my views that Mughals indulged in
homosexual activities in his letter 'Homosexuality' (June 1-15).
Agreed, Islam condemns homosexuality in no uncertain terms
and Qur'an categorically prohibits it, but instances of homosexu-
ality among Muslims are not few and far between. Why is
sodomy called a 'Nawabi Shauq' (pastime of Nabobs)? Weren't
the Nawabs of Lucknow, Bhopal and Hyderabad fond of young
boys? 'The Dawn', 'The Nation' and Nawa-e-Waqt' (all from
Pakistan) reported the Pathans of NWFP and their predilection
for boys? Talibans, who call themselves the custodians of Islam
and the retainers of its pristine form, indulge in sodomy. Mughal
emperor Zahiruddin Babar clearly wrote about his weakness for
boys in his autobiography 'Tuzuk-e-Babri', originally written in
Turkish. We mustn't forget that despite religious bindings and
restrictions, we're all human beings with certain preferences and
priorities that cannot be thwarted by any faith however great its
influence on its followers. To live in a state of denial is to turn a
Nelson's eye to truth. And however hard you may try, truth has
its own way to emerge and laugh at your credulity.

Mr. Chidambaram is angry
I fully endorse the views of Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan expressed in
his write up 'Mr. Chidambaram is angry: (MG, May 1-15, 2012).
It is really unfortunate that the Union home minister has not a
word of condemnation against outfits of Chauvinistic Hindu com-
munal organisation like Abhinav Bharat Sanatan Sansthan,
Bajrag Dal and Shiv Sena who have been arrested in being
involved in terrorist activities, but has condemned Muslim lead-
ers an organization for protesting against the picking up Muslim
youths throughout the country by the police on ground of suspi-
cion and using inhuman 3 degree methods against them. This is
nothing but a clear instance of double standards of the Hon'ble
minister and is quite against basic tenets of fair play and justice
Dr. M. Hashim Kidwai, ex-M.P, Mayur Vihar, Delhi
US attack on Indian fisherman
The attack on the fishing boat by the U. S. warship in the Persian
Gulf, killing an Indian citizen and injuring three others shall serve
as a wake-up call to the Indian administration. The heavy build-
up by the Fifth Fleet of the U. S. Navy in the region has already
created a warlike situation endangering the lives and livelihood
of about six million Indians living in the region. Any misadventure
by the U. S or Israel on Iran could engulf the entire region into
another irreversible turmoil. It is unfortunate that a large democ-
racy like India should have kowtowed to the U. S. demand by
cutting short the crude oil import from a time-tested friendly
nation like Iran. Instead of being a passive onlooker to the
unfolding chaos, India should play a proactive role by bringing
together the international community to build pressure on the 'U.
S - Israel combine' to find an amicable solution with Iran over its
nuclear programme.

Secularism - for unity and integrity
Democracy and secularism are foundations of our constitution.
It means the state should remain impartial and neutral regarding
all religions and communities. According to our constitution all
are equal irrespective of caste, creed and colour. Ours is a multi-
religious, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country. The
architects of India's constitution were men of wisdom and
believed in "Unity in Diversity". Secularism is India's destiny
which stood the test of time. Secularism guarantees unity and
integrity of our mother land and its plural society. There are
diverse creeds, cultures and traditions in Hindu society. Hindus
practice different personal laws and customs. Hence secularism
is necessary to accommodate peacefully such diversities in
Hindu society. Hence secularism is essential for harmony and
peaceful coexistence and for unity, integrity and solidarity of
India.

State terror exposed
According to agency report on 9 July, Bangalore police, which
picked up (rather kidnapped) school teacher Kafil Akhtar from
Darbhanga in the very morning of 5th May by 6-7 plainclothes
who barged into his the house. Karnataka police defied police
manual and S. C. directions. National media aired this news as
terrorist captured by Karnatka police from Darbhanga. Lead
news about Kafil Akhter and manufactured terror activities
charges and links published at front page continued for many
days. When Karnataka police acquitted him, the media is not
interested in publishing the acquittal of Kafil Akhter? Now
Karnataka police is handing Kafil to Delhi police for further inves-
tigation. Why? This is the modus operandi of police to destroy
the life of an innocent Muslim.

Indian Police
All countrymen rightly resent the deplorable, thoroughly ineffi-
cient and corrupt Indian police and its functioning. It has earned
notoriety for the immensely inhuman torturous 3 degree methods
leading to custodial death, resorting to fake encounters, produc-
tion of fabricated evidence in the courts, arresting innocent
Indian citizens and keeping them for months as under-trials. It is
full of anti Muslim bias and consider all Muslims terrorists. Over
and above all this, it has failed to perform its primary duty of reg-
istering FIRs and allowing notorious criminals and history-
sheeters to commit all sorts of crimes in return for receiving reg-
ularly money from them. Police stations have virtually become
dens of worst kind of crimes. Its failure to control public demon-
strations and use force is the glaring example of its thorough
incompetence. The need of the hour is this that the whole police
system should be overhauled and revamped and a new compre-
hensive law is passed by the Parliament removing all the evils
and converting the police Department into a real public service
department.
Dr. M. Hashim Kidwai, Ex M. P. Mayur Vihar, Delhi - 91
Secularist modus operandi to deceive Muslim
Congress-NCP ruled Maharashtra where a DCP ordered Muslim
police Ishaq Tamboli to shave his beard. This is a secular part-
ruled state. Jamiatul Ulama (Arshad Madni) group met minority
welfare minister Arif Nasim Khan with DCP order, and SC order
about beard respecting norms etc. Arif Nasim Khan met home
minister and only then the DCP order was withdrawn. This
drama of secularism is just to fool Muslims. A DCP dared to go
against SC orders and hurt religious sentiments, yet the so-
called secular government let him go scot-free. These pseudo-
secular leaders and parties even government play shadow box-
ing to fool Muslims.

Muslim media lacks Milli instinct
On 12th July Bihar C.M. met 173 Bihar class II grade trainee
officers at his residence and wished them successes in practical
field. Urdu newspapers published detailed report of that pro-
gramme displaying the data about the officers that out of 173
officers 150 are Bihar administrative officers and 23 are from
Bihar finance service. Our media is missing milli lineage that is
why they did not publish the data about Muslim officers: how
many out of 173 are Muslims? These are the reasons why
Muslim media is loosing sheen.

P. C. should be condemned
The remarks passed by Mr. Chidambaram, Union Home
Minister, against the middle class people for paying Rs. 15 for a
bottle of water or Rs. 20 for a cup of ice cream should in no way
be justified. Mr. Mukhtar Naqvi of BJP while condemning the
statement rightly stated that Mr. P. C. has not tasted poverty and
price rising as he sits comfortably in air-conditioned rooms, uses
air-conditioned cars, uses foreign made spectacles and eats
best quality food for which he is not required to pay from his
pocket. It is observed that for the past few months the honble
Home Minister has been making very irresponsible, irrelevant
and ridiculous statements on different subjects and problems
intermittently either related to his portfolio or not. It appears that
he is completely in dark about the pitiable condition of country-
men especially middle class people. Before passing such
remarks he must bear in mind that he is people's representative
and that by virtue of public support, he is enjoying the minister-
ship and life lavishly. Honble home minister must know that
water bottle or ice cream is used by the people in a casual way
but the rice is used thrice a day as a diet.

Thakeray Losing Balance of Mind In Old age
Due to his increasing old age it seems The Supreme of Shiva
Sena is losing balance of mind .He has suggested The new
President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherji to reject the application
for clemency of Afzal Guru ,the so called mastermind of parlia-
ment attack. Mr. Bala Thackeray has already been hanged by
her granddaughter. She had married a Muslim doctor. With this
incidence he has lost his credibility to give any kind of statement
about any Muslim. The prophet has declared categorically that a
Muslim is brother of Muslim. The supreme has committed a blun-
der by giving him the punishment of hanging him without listen-
ing his case even the high court did the same mistake. Only the
trial court has played the role of High court and the Supreme
court making the case as purely political nature. If Parnab goes
deep into the disposal of his case he order to conduct denovey
enquiry into the case and acquit Afzal Guru. Moreover he may
not think to taint his hands from the blood of Afzal Guru who was
not at all present at the helm of affair. Mrs. Prathibha Bharati, the
ex-president might had the same complexity to act on the case.

From today I shall recommend that all young people aim to
become psychiatrists. The prospects of that profession are look-
ing up like never before. If the Koodankulam protesters are to
have their minds set right by shrinks, it cannot be long before all

way must collectively undergo electro-convulsive therapy.

Jungle raj, gunda raj, terrorist, naxalite.
ABP news channel at 6.30 p.m. on 3 July aired a debate on pro-
gramme on "Rs. 20 lakh for MLA's car from development fund".
BJP leader Sidhartnath Singh many times called Akhilesh Yadav
government as gunda raj, just as the elected government of
Laloo Yadav was branded as jungle raj. Media are openly dub-
bing arrested Muslims as terrorists. Adivasis killed by police are
called Naxals. Dalits are treated as outcaste (achuts) since
ancient times. Backwards, adivasis, dalits and Muslims are at
the receiving end and who gets the benefit? Without recognising
the beneficiaries, B. C., S. T, S. C. and Muslims will not get jus-
tice.

Congress Party
Time and again the Congress Party is seen pitted with succes-
sion issue to a great extent. Manmohan Singh who became a
PM eight years ago simply turned out by chance as Rahul was
not prepared to take the reign in his hands. The latest fiasco over
Salman Khurshid's 'direction' comment has clearly indicated that
not Singh but it is the Congress itself which can be tagged as the
actual 'underachiever'. If you look at the story some three years
ago, Rahul Gandhi was termed as the modern day Chanakya of
politics. He was also referred as "the quiet revolutionary", the
man who was on a mission to "democratize" the dynasty-
obsessed Congress and "drive it to a new tomorrow." However,
in the past three years the tide has turned out against Rahul, that
now even Congressmen are beginning to acknowledge his fail-
ings, going by Khurshid's brutally honest assessment of him.
The Congress party's monopoly was clearly over long ago and
as of now Rahul Gandhi too has proved out to be a poor brand
ambassador for the political dynasty.

A shame
The death of four years old Mahi near Gurgaon is really a shame
on us. Such tragedies have taken place earlier but the adminis-
tration failed to take any action or preventive measure to prevent
occurrence of such incidents. It reflects administration's total
indifference to human life. In sensitivity has become an integral
part of Indian life. Unfortunately we have not developed the habit
of taking due care. This is because every thing is taken for grant-
ed and nothing is taken seriously. Maintenance and up-keep of
anything built whether house or factory is not considered a part
of job. One is shocked that no action has been taken against
those responsible for sinking illegal bore wells which is a great
danger to human life.

US policy
The U. S. hypocrisy is out in the open, when its President Barack
Obama is raising walls of protectionism in his own country vis--
vis outsourcing, while on the other hand coercing India to open
its markets in vital sectors like retail. We have seen as how our
farmers have paid the price to the arbitrary conditions of the
WTO which led to unstable conditions in agriculture. Retail in
India has been a source of succor to about 160 million people
and the livelihood of scores of kirana merchants will be bull-
dozed if the global retail giants like Walmart are allowed to open
their shops. The matter of allowing FDI in retail was stalled after
the move by the UPA government was vibrantly opposed in the
Parliament. The bullying tactics of the U. S shall not be allowed
to subdue our sovereign interests.

Assom Molestation Case
People of India have demanded to punish the criminals who
committed the Assam molestation case. The demand is coming
uniformly from people of various sects .The home minister Mr P

Assam to give relevant punishment to the criminals and give the
compliance report to him .This is not a single case that has taken
place .Hundreds of such cases are taking place in each and
every state of the country. There are a number of such cases

Karnatka circus
By replacing Sadananda Gowda with Jagadish Shettar though
the BJP has for the time being succeeded to solve the crisis in
Karnataka it has sent many wrong messages to the public as
well as to the politicians. Instead of sacking the tainted
Yeddyurappa from the party it is trying to appease him for
Lingayat votes. The saga renders the anti-corruption charges it
labels on UPA meaningless. Seeing that the party has given into
the irrational demands of Yeddyurappa it is more likely that other
politicians too will start blackmailing the high command of the
BJP for their interests. The public wonders as to where the dis-
cipline of the BJP has gone.

has become known very well that In Delhi the capital of the coun-
try is not safe for women .If you ponder over the intensity of
crimes are increasing .The culprits can rape a mother and kill her
the dearest idol in the world .All the values moral .religious,
social have been buried deep into the earth .Our reformers are
spell bound they are unable and feel themselves incompetent to
set right the present tsunami of immorality and crime culture .We
are busy in solving the Mumbai attack case and vigorously
engaging Pakistan to hand over the Master minds of that case
.Non of the politician is bothered about the present moral and
spiritual degradation of our nation .Our scientist are advancing in
Missile technology and made Agni-Missile which can target
Shanghai .But we are unable to punish the killers rapists debau-
turers, decoits grafters etc The only solution is Islamization or
Talibanization of the state .No other solutions can be successful.
