The Program for Net Control

Version 6

INTRO All that is required of a net control operator is the ability to remember who has checked into the Net, and to distribute messages to the Net. And thats it. Thats about as simple as it gets. But some of us like to use all the tools available to assist us in the proper control of a local Net. And yes, all the material thats required is a pencil and something to write on. This software, LeeNetPlus, allows the Net operator a simple way to enter calls into a computer, visually see the status of that call, and to provide a record of the events of that Net. Along with this simple operation are a few added tools to help the Net control to run an easily structured Net. As an example, this version has over 20,000 Amateur calls that will automatically add information about a call when that call is entered. This manual is provided to assist the control operator in the proper operation of the computer software. It is written in easy to follow statements, without all the technical computer terms used by some manuals, and actual screen displays are 2

provided to assist in the learning of the software. All screen displays can be enlarged to allow better viewing. INSTALLATION The application software for LeeNet Plus may be obtained on a CD, or received as a zip file by email. Copy the main folder to your C: drive. Open the folder and find the application LeeNet Plus.EXE. You may create a shortcut for this application on your desktop.

The folder LEENETPLUS should contain the following sub-folders: Apps-the software for editing scripts File-the main database and backup Help-instruction manual Map-display maps Note-storage for notes (not used) Script-the location for scripts Sound-sound files (wav) Update-location for FCC library files LeeNet.EXE-the software application When you are ready to start the application, double click on this EXE program. A small window will appear with the serial number, and date. The software has now been installed. The application file, the actual software program will be named LeeNet and then a number. The number is the version number of the software. Fox example LeeNet657 indicates version 6.57. You may rename this EXE file, or leave the name as it is. You do not have to rename the file when updates are received, just make a short cut on your desk top for the new version. ENTERING CALLS (Log IN)

When a call is heard for check in, enter that call at the bottom of the Main screen, below the displayed log. Simply enter the call, then click on the LOG IN icon, or you may enter the call and press the SPACE BAR on the keyboard. The call is then displayed in the log. The position of the new call in the log depends on the VIEW SORT mode for the displayed log. An IN time will appear indicating when the call was entered into the Log. A LOG must be created before any calls can be checked into the Net. If a call is entered on a log and that call has previously been entered, a prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating DUPLICATE call and the repeated call is displayed. REMOVING A CALL If a call has been entered into the log, incorrectly, highlight that call on the log, and then click REMOVE. This will remove it only from the log, not from the database. LOGGING OUT When a call has checked out of the Net, highlight that call, and click on the OUT icon located at the bottom right of the Main screen. This will re-sort the Main screen and indicate an OUT TIME, or check out time. The location of the call in the Log will depend on the selection of the View-Sort option. RECHECK If you click on a wrong command, or icon, you can clear or reset a call by clicking on RECHECK. This will remove the Time Out indication. This icon will also show how many calls are displayed in the current log.

DATABASE vs. LIBRARY vs. CALLLIST

When you first start Lee Net, the LIBRARY database will contain over 20,000 hams located in North Carolina. The CALL LIST does not have any calls listed. When a call is entered in the log, the software looks in the CALL LIST database and matches it with an Amateurs name, address, telephone, and email address. If the call is not located, the software will search the LIBRARY database and then transfer the call to the CALL LIST. When a call is not found in either the CALL LIST or the LIBRARY, an ADD CALL screen will appear that will allow you to enter this new call. Changes and additions can be made to the CALL LIST database, but no changes are allowed to the LIBRARY. The LOGS are kept in a separate table called Logs. All the calls, operator data, and times are kept in this file. A smaller file is SETUP. The settings for the software program on your computer are located in this file. When you change versions of software the data is still maintained in the SETUP file. CALL DATA To change data relating to a call, click on the SEARCH option. Enter the CALL you want to modify. Then click SEARCH. Highlight this call and click the EDIT icon. When you have made the necessary changes, click UPDATE. Or the complete call and associated data can be deleted from the database by pressing DELETE. This call and data are then removed from the CALL LIST. SEARCH To search for data on an individual Amateur call, select the SEARCH icon from the Main screen. A Search screen will appear. Located at the bottom is a cell to enter the requested call. After the data has been entered, click on SEARCH. All matching data is displayed. A counter located next to the data cell displays how many matches were found. You may enter the complete call, or a portion of the call. If you are searching for W1MBS, it is allowed to enter W1MBS, W1M, or MBS. Or you may search for a name by entering Joe, Joe S, or Smith. It is possible to search by entering a Zip code, or a City, or a State. If you wanted to find all the hams near you, enter your zip code and click on SEARCH. When a match has been found, you can obtain more information about the match by highlighting the match, and clicking on EDIT. The EDIT CALL box will appear. Changes can also be completed with this box. A call can permanently be removed from the CALL LIST database by clicking on DELETE. You can not delete the call from the LIBRARY.

QUICKLIST To assist the net control operator when typing calls during the net, a QUICK function is available. Click on the QUICK icon at the top of the screen. The icon will change to a green background when active. To disable the function, click on the icon again. When the icon is active, start entering a call at the bottom of the log. When it has found a match, or matches, a screen will appear. Click on the desired call and enter that call in the log.

NOTES An option called NOTES allows the operator to generate a simple note to be used during the Net meeting. This can be a reminder about an upcoming event or just to remind the operator to contact someone after the Net. This note can be saved and recalled later in the session or recalled at the next Net meeting. The call is displayed at the top of the box. Below the call is a text box the operator can enter data. To add the text to the NOTE column of the log, click ADD. If the calling station has a message for the net, click MESSAGE. For an indication the operator has talked to the calling station, click QRU. And to remove the text, click REMOVE. MESSAGE During the process of running a Net a calling station may indicate they have a message for the net. To mark the log for a MESSAGE reminder highlight the call entry on the log and click on NOTES, then click MESSAGE. A symbol is placed in the NOTE column on the log to indicate you have contacted this call to verify the call has traffic. To remove this MESSAGE indicator, click NOTES and then click REMOVE. A prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating a message is waiting.

QRU Have you anything for me? As you operate the net there needs to be a way to indicate on the log you have contacted this call to check for any traffic. To mark this call, click on the call entry on the log, click on NOTES, and then click QRU. 6

A symbol is placed in the NOTE column on the log to indicate you have contacted this call. At the end of the net all calls should have the QRU indicator. To remove this mark, click NOTES, and then click REMOVE. CLOCK Located on the bottom right of the Main screen is a clock button. This shows the correct time, based on the internal clock of the computer. By double clicking on this button the setup screen for the SPEED KEYS is displayed.

FILE - New Log

Now the fun begins. Each entry, each Net meeting, and each contact, must be entered into a Log. Think of a Log as a sheet or paper where you will enter every contact. You must have a Log to keep the list of contacts. Click on FILE and then click on NEW LOG, or you may click on the icon for NEW Log. A display will appear that allows you to enter data for the new log you wish to create. Enter the LOG NAME. This is usually composed of a location name, and a date for reference. An example would be FIELDDAY0410, or TUESDAY0920. This will make it easier to locate knowing both the location and the date of the Net. Next you enter the name of the NET or the name of the club. A pull down menu will display the names of previous nets. The DATE field is automatically filled in by the computer. The next entry is LOCATION. This can be the city or remote location and only serves as a reference. When complete click ADD. The new log is now shown on the main screen with the name of the log, the net name and the date displayed in the top left corner. With the new log created you are ready to call the Net, and enter the calls.

FILE - Open Log

To recall a previous log click the icon for LOG, and then click on the log you

want to open from a list that is displayed on this page. Or you can click on FILE, and then select OPEN LOG. The Log will then appear on the Main screen. If this is not the Log needed simply click on the FILE option and repeat the process. An option is provided on this screen to allow the user to DELETE a log. Highlight the log to you wish to remove, and then click on DELETE. This will remove the selected log from the system database, and any associated calls. You can not delete the current log that has been opened.

FILE - Close Log

When the Net has ended it is suggested the net control operator CLOSE the current log. As operators check into the log an IN time is placed on the log, and when the operator leaves the net an OUT time is placed on the log. By using the function CLOSE LOG the end time of the net is placed as the OUT time for all the operators that are currently logged into the net.

FILE Clear Screen

To remove all items from the Main screen, click on FILE and then click on CLEAR. This will not remove any data from the database. This will only clear the current screen.

FILE - Exit
There are no special instructions for shutting down this software. Normal Windows guidelines should be followed. All displayed data on the screen is shown directly from the computers hard drive. So no data will be lost or will be affected by a normal Windows shut down. To end this program click on FILE and then click on EXIT, or click on the X in the top right corner of the Main screen. It is suggested all call entries be logged out by high lighting the call, and clicking on LOG OUT or click on OPTIONS and then click on CLOSE NET.

NOTEBOOK Scripts
Normally the Net control operator has a SCRIPT that must be read during the net. This is useful for opening the Net, and allows the operator to read announcements during the net.

Click on NOTEBOOK and then click on SCRIPT. Located on the right side of the screen is a list of available scripts. Highlight a script and then click on SELECT. The requested script is displayed in a window for the operator to read during the Net. A scroll bar allows the operator to position the script so the correct data is displayed. Options are provided to allow a NEW script to be generated and Saved. Corrections to a previous script can be made and then saved by clicking on the Save button. Old scripts can be edited and resaved or Deleted. Scripts can be Copied and then Pasted to the page using normal Window commands. There are also two buttons, FONT and COLOR that will allow the user to change the Font color and the Background color. The changes are not saved and will have to be changed each time the user desires those specific colors.

NOTEBOOK Calendar
A CALENDAR can be displayed by clicking NOTEBOOK and then clicking CALENDAR.

NOTEBOOK Email
If an Email address has been added to a call in the CALL LIST then it will be displayed in the notebook Email section. This screen is used to only display the Email address.

NOTEBOOK Telephone
If a TELEPHONE number has been added to a call in the CALL LIST, then it will be displayed in the notebook Telephone section. This screen is used to only display the telephone number.

NOTEBOOK Events
The EVENTS section allows the user to enter events that can be read during a net. On the first line the current DATE is displayed. Using a pull down calendar a date may be selected. On the next line is the name of the EVENT. And a third line is provided for a COMMENT concerning this event. Click ADD to add this event to the list. The EVENT list can also be PRINTED and an individual item can 9

be removed form the list. To remove an item click on that item and click DELETE.

NOTEBOOK Comment
An option called COMMENT allows the operator to generate a simple note to be used during the Net meeting. This COMMENT is attached to the CALL, so that each time the call checks into a net this comment is shown and added to the current log. The call is displayed at the top of the box. Below the call is a text box the operator can enter data. To add the text to the COMMENT column of the log, click ADD. And to remove the text, click DELETE.

PRINT
While a log is displayed on the main screen, clicking PRINT will print this log and all relating data to a printer.

OPTIONS Timer
Once activated, this pop up screen becomes a 10 minute timer. Every 10 minutes the computer will generate an alarm. To reset the timer, click on the Timer screen. If you click twice on the Timer screen, this feature is disabled. The time for the alarm can be set to different times in the SETUP function.

OPTIONS Setup
The SETUP screen is where the parameters of the LeeNet Plus application are set. When this screen is displayed the user can modify settings for this program. On the left side is basic information about the application and how the software has been installed. The options on the right allow for changes. Select which option you want to change and click on that option. The radio button will be illuminated. Then click UPDATE. When you have finished, click CANCEL. If you have made changes you MUST exit the application and restart the program.

If support is needed for LeeNet, a support routine is available for registered users. This screen contains a field where data can be entered. If you have logged on the internet, and are using Outlook as your email carrier, then select the first option. When you click SEND MAIL an email is sent to support. If you do not use Outlook, then click the second option. When you click on SEND MAIL a screen will appear instructing you where to locate a text file that has been generated. Copy this text file into your email and email it to support.

OPTIONS Close Net

This option when used at the end of the net, will insert the net end time for any calls that do not have an OUT time.

OPTIONS Register
12

All versions of LeeNet are sold un-registered. The software will operate normally but with limited features. To register, or upgrade the current version, go to this section. When you receive a registration code, enter the code and click UPDATE. If the correct code has been entered then this version has been registered. You MUST stop the application and restart the software for the registration process to be completed.

DATABASE Add Call

The first option is Add Call. This option allows the user to create a new call in the CALL LIST database. Just click on this option, complete the screen, and then click on Enter. The data is now reachable by normal methods for the database.

DATABASE Update Library

This option is used to install a new library. This option is used when an update is posted by the FCC or distributed by a regional net manager. The user copies the new library file to the UPDATE folder of LeeNet. Click DATABASE, and then click UPDATE LIBRARY. The files that are stored in the UPDATE folder are shown in the window at the top of the screen. The small window in the middle indicates which library is currently loaded. Select the desired file to load in the library and then click SELECT. If the file is the correct format you will se a list of calls in the lower window. Indicate if you want to REPLACE the current library with the selected file, or if you want to APPEND (add) this file to the current library. If you want to load more than one state, select APPEND. Click UPDATE and follow the prompts. The process of updating the library takes about 2 minutes. During this process the CLOCK at the bottom of the main screen will stop.

DATABASE Database
Backup database. By clicking on this a complete backup database is created. This is an option that comes in handy if the main database becomes damaged or corrupt. It is suggested this function be done on a regular basis. Restore Database. In the event the main database has been corrupted, this routine will replace the bad database with a previous copy of the database.

13

Backup to Drive. This function allows the user to transfer or copy data from individual files to a backup location or to a removable disk. This feature is useful for transferring data from one computer to another or for a security backup storage outside the computer. Delete Database. Normally this routine is used when the software is initially installed. This will DELETE all the LOGS, EVENTS, and CALL LIST from the database. It is suggested that before using this routine a BACKUP DATABSE be preformed. Database Files. By clicking on this item a screen will appear displaying files stored in the main database.

DATABASE Net Search

If the user needs to verify, a call has checked into a certain net, click NET SEARCH. At the bottom of the screen enter the CALL you want to search. Next enter the name of the NET. Then click SEARCH. The log data for the net the call has checked into is displayed.

DATABASE Transfer Database

A routine is available that will allow the user to transfer the log and call list data from computer to computer. This routine does not transfer the SETUP files or the LIBRARY files. When using this transfer method the user must follow the directions or the entire database could be corrupted. From the DATABASE options click on TRANSFER DATABASE. A Transfer File screen will appear. There are two options available. The first is DATABASE. This will copy the transfer files TO the main DATABASE from the transfer files. The second option is TRANSFER FILE and this option copies the main files FROM the DATABASE TO the transfer FILES. The first step is to copy the data files from the computers main database and to create the transfer files. Click on the TRANSFER FILES button. The button for the DATABASE will change to GREEN, and the TRANSFER FILES button will change to RED. This indicates you are going to copy FROM the database, GREEN, TO the transfer files, RED. Then click the TRANSFER icon. A prompt will indicate the files have been copied.

14

The TRANSFER files are created in the FILES folder on your hard drive. There are three (3) transfer files. They are LeeNetLogTransfer.txt, LeeNetLogListTransfer.txt, and LeeNetCallTransfer.txt. These files can then be copied to a CD or a thumb drive to be transported to the second computer. The names of these files must NOT be changed. The copied TRANSFER files are then placed in the FILES folder on the second computer. All three files must be copied. Click on Transfer Database from the DATABASE options on the second computer. This is the computer you are going to transfer the files. The TRANSFER screen will appear. When the transfer files have been copied to the FILE folder, click DATABASE. Now the DATABASE button is RED and the TRANSFER FILE button is GREEN. This procedure will now copy the transfer files TO the main computer DATABASE FROM the three TRANSFER FILES. Click the TRANSFER icon when ready. During the process a prompt will appear asking if you want to copy the CALL LIST also. If you reply NO your current CALL LIST will not be changed, only the LOG information will be copied. At this prompt if you indicate YES; all the calls in the transfer files will be added to your current CALL LIST. This could create duplicate calls. If there are any duplicate calls they can be deleted later using the search/edit function.

MAP
This routine provides the user a map indicating where the operators are located. The first step is to open a log. Then click on MAP. Across the top of the screen are the operating functions for this map.

15

Exit Closes the map page and returns to the main screen Map List Displays the current maps available. The user starts by clicking on Map and selecting the desired map. If the user wants a custom map then that map can be generated by any paint software in a .JPG format with a size of 890 x 615 pixels. The new map is then saved in the LeeNet\Map\ folder. There are two (2) maps that require special attention. The first is the main map. This is the default map. It can be changed, but there MUST be a map with this name stored in the MAP folder. The second map is the calibration map and it must remain unchanged. Some computers will generate a Thumbs.db file. Do NOT select this item. Call [+ Add] The user can select the call to be displayed on the map To ADD a call to the map, click CALL. A list will appear displaying all the calls listed in the current log. Double click the desired call. The selected call will be displayed at the top of the screen, next to the XY co-ordinates. Position the cursor on the map at the desired location, and double click. The call is now displayed. Remove [- Delete] The user can select the call to be removed To REMOVE a call to the map, click REMOVE. A list will appear displaying all the calls listed in the current log. Double click the desired call. The call is now removed from the map. Clear Removes ALL the calls from the map If the user clicks on CLEAR, all the calls will be removed from the map. This does change the calls listed in the log. Calibrate Used to position the cursor on the map. The map MUST be calibrated before using the pointer, cursor, to correct any differences with monitor resolution. To calibrate the map: a. Load a Log b. Click MAP c. Click CALL and add a call to the log. Position the cursor exactly where you want the call to be displayed. Double click the mouse.
